In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

issues which have caused such anguish (slavery, segregation, guns, abortion)
Sorry for going off on a tangent but I listened to this earlier and found it very interesting

'In the final episode of our American Histories series, Sarah Churchwell tells the incredible story of the politics of abortion during the 1970’s. How did evangelicals go from supporting abortion to being its die-hard opponents, what did the switch have to do with the politics of race and what have been the lasting consequences for American democracy?'

www.salon.com/2020/01/09/americas-first-mercenary-president-donald-trump-is-blinded-by-greed-and-self-interest/

'Because of his innate personality and his authoritarian politics, Trump rejects the very notion of “public service” and the common good. He views the U.S. government as an extension of his will, personality and goals. To that end the public good is to be subsumed by what is good for Donald Trump (and his family and allies), whether personally, financially and politically. In all, Trumpism is the logic of organized crime imported into the White House and then applied to American government.'

Unfortunately, so many of the unwritten checks and balances (the norms) rely on good faith with the supposition that even 'bad faith' actors will be exposed and removed along the way.

Someone like Trump with the GOP in support is uncharted territory.

I remember you talking about the CC a long time ago cozie.

Jefferson sounds very sensible ... look at the Second Amendment.

I sometimes make reference to one, lion - still. Not given up on the thought despite

Congress has voted in favour of the War Powers Bill.

Trump’s sycophant Matt Gaetz (R) was one of those who voted FOR the bill, most surprisingly.

They really haven't. Not if you consider the president in the cartoon. Wink

"The Boeing scandal is an indictment of Trump’s corporate America"
"There is growing alarm in the US that Capitol Hill’s bonfire of the regulations has led to hundreds of deaths. It may be a turning point "

Fingers crossed. But doubt it.

PerkingFaintly · 10/01/2020 11:14

TBF, Trump isn't responsible for the longterm cuts to the FAA and regulation-dodging by the corporates.

That's an ongoing neo-liberal (in the US sense, ie laissez-faire ) project, implemented very effectively by the Republicans.

Horrid shades of the Grenfell cladding manufacturer here:

Essentially, Boeing decided that the Max 8 did not need recertification and this decision was not challenged by the FAA. Moreover, Boeing undertook much of the safety work itself without any independent review, although as yet the outside world does not know to what degree. What we do know is that 1,000 Boeing employees are seconded to the FAA. Boeing then decided to market the Max 8 as part of the 737 family rather than as a plane with wholly different flight characteristics and a new automated software system

Lweji · 10/01/2020 11:25

He's been signing off and encouraging legislation to get rid of regulations.
It's part of a pattern.

And a culture of increasingly dodgy business practices supported by incompetents in key places.

Sanders:

'Sarah Sanders on war powers: "I can't think of anything dumber than allowing Congress to take over our foreign policy ... The last thing we want to do is push powers into Congress' hands and take them away from the president."'

Confused
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/01/2020 12:04

Can anyone explain why the Iranians would fire on a civilian aircraft full of people from countries with which they have perfectly reasonable relations insofar as America allows them to have relations with anyone? If it had been an American plane I can see how some Iranian fanatic might have decided to down it, but Ukrainian? Why?

What would they have against 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three Britons, which is what is reported were aboard?

It doesn't make any sense....

RhinoskinhaveI · 10/01/2020 12:31

I can't think of anything dumber than Sarah Sanders!
Then again is she even a real person ....surely she can only be a ventriloquist dummy with the absolute gobshite that she comes out with 🙄

Lordfrontpaw · 10/01/2020 12:46

Can anyone explain... accident. If they had done it purposely then it would have either been a US craft or been done to make it look like a US action (and would be yelling about it now). So I suspect an accident (if indeed it was one of their missiles).

But why was a passenger plane allowed to fly during tensions? If I was due to fly when I thought WW3 was about to break out -especially as the passenger plane shot down by the USS Vincennes - (and the captain 'rewarded' ???) is still remembered with great sorrow and anger, I'd take a pass.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/01/2020 16:11

Last Word on radio 4 is interesting (Salamani).

stripeypillowcase · 10/01/2020 17:14

But why was a passenger plane allowed to fly during tensions?

happens all the time. it's due to (fuel) costs...
similar to the dutch plane in the ukraine a few years back.

Trumpy is now claiming he is responsbile for the decline in cancer, like some medieval monarch curing scrofula, with a laying on of his tiny orange hands.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/01/2020 17:43

Yes there’s a rise in citizens shooting each other (as opposed to terrorists). Can we assume he is responsible for that too (well apart from whipping up the crazy)?
