In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

Only Netanyahu, of course. And his Fox sycophants. And his MAGA Twitter gang, who have been instructed to say that if anyone questions anything about the assassination, they must hate the US. Ridiculous. Putin is really winning.

Michael McFaul @McFaul 20hr

Has any US ally or partner in the world praised our assassination of Soleimani? Too early? Or are we alone on this one?

Well, Trump's new year has started off in the only way it could really - just more of the same old shit.

Desperate (and very dangerous) dead cats to try and take the focus away from his impeachment, his rapes and sexual abuse court cases, his deteriorating mental ability, his servitude to Putin and his continued unworthiness to be POTUS.

Iran strike is a big mistake and his utter disregard for the safety of the rest of the world means that yet again the civilian populations of Iraq and Syria (plus the possibility of retribution aimed at commuters and concert goers in Europe) will be the ones who suffer. Big Brave Ol' Bone Spurs.

Trump/Iran/war - Some thoughts and opinions from a legal POV.
(Thread)

1/ I have written a legal opinion in government and many pieces out of government on presidential war powers. And FWIW I have grown very, very cynical about legal constraints on those war powers. Here are some thoughts as the lawyers begin to weigh in.

Let's see how many GOP Congress members will encourage their sons and daughters to fight in Trump's war on behalf of the USofA.

Trump's speech is becoming increasingly slurred. He stumbles over names and words that he should be fluent with. He really does not present as a well man.

Roussette · 04/01/2020 13:32

I have a lot of time for this man. How refreshing to listen to someone who is informed, knowledgeable and eloquent. Such a contrast to POTUS.

He talks sense.

'Taking out a bad guy is not a good decision unless there is a plan on what to do next and we have seen very little evidence of consultations domestically and internationally, and the kind of strategic planning that will be necessary to ensure that this decision was made with the consequences fully understood'

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/01/2020 13:35

I listened astounded to what the World Service broadcast of his rally for the evanjellybabies in which he was trying to exonerate himself for his decision to order an individual's killing.

Either it was really well edited, or he sounded less insane than he has for months. His voice was even, he didn't slur his words, and he spoke in sentences. I find it disturbing if the only time he doesn't come over as a dribbling dotard is when he is exulting in vicarious murder.

Lweji · 04/01/2020 14:18

Remember when umbrellagate was just the worst? No? Because it was not newsworthy outside Fox?

Good times...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/01/2020 15:27

I must be thick, cozie. I don't see it.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/01/2020 19:27

I find it somehow demeening when a senior official in another administration refers to my countrymen as "Brits". Does any of our cabinet call Americans "Yanks" in statements to the press?

cozietoesie · 04/01/2020 20:18

Not thick. Have a look at first SOTU and draw some conclusions........

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/01/2020 20:38

Oh. Creating an enemy without in order to draw attention away from his status as enemy within? (He was still more coherent than I'd expect on more recent form.)

Fresh Cambridge Analytica leak ‘shows global manipulation is out of control’
www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jan/04/cambridge-analytica-data-leak-global-election-manipulation

An explosive leak of tens of thousands of documents from the defunct data firm Cambridge Analytica is set to expose the inner workings of the company
[...]
The unpublished documents contain material that suggests the firm was working for a political party in Ukraine in 2017 even while under investigation as part of Mueller’s inquiry and emails that Kaiser says describe how the firm helped develop a “sophisticated infrastructure of shell companies that were designed to funnel dark money into politics”.

“There are emails between these major Trump donors discussing ways of obscuring the source of their donations through a series of different financial vehicles. These documents expose the entire dark money machinery behind US politics.” The same machinery, she says, was deployed in other countries that Cambridge Analytica worked in, including, she claims, Britain.
[...]
[Emma Briant said] “The documents reveal a much clearer idea of what actually happened in the 2016 US presidential election, which has a huge bearing on what will happen in 2020. It’s the same people involved who we know are building on these same techniques,” she said.

'Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently....

....hundreds of Iranian protesters. He was already attacking our Embassy, and preparing for additional hits in other locations. Iran has been nothing but problems for many years. Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have.....

....targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!

The absolutism - and lies - in this statement is astonishing.

FFS his tweets....

The 52 american hostages were taken in 1979. That's 41 years ago. He really has lost it in his justification of what he has done.

I am sure Soliemani was an objectionable awful murdering man, but there are reasons he has not been taken out before. I don't think many people apart from his cult followers believe this hasn't been done for the wrong reasons.

RhinoskinhaveI · 05/01/2020 10:31

With this targeting of the 52 sites for something done 41 years ago go he is setting the stage for countless acts of revenge for past injustices
This is such a stupid primitive regressive tribal manoeuvre, the leader of the free modern world is acting like a primitive warlord, he wants to take them all back to mediaeval times just so that he can rule over everyone
everyone can burn and suffer for his glorification
for the glorification of this fucking idiot
