DH stuck on the M5... help!

NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 17:45

It turns out DH's breakdown cover isn't worth a Mars Bar!

He's broken down on the M4/M5 junction.

They're sending out a recovery truck but he has to tell them where to tow him to which has to be a local garage.

Any recommendations??

I need to get the kids packed into the car to go and pick him up... not quite how any of wanted to spend Friday night.

Surely they mean a garage local to you not local to North Bristol?

ScreamingValenta · 29/11/2019 17:47

I don't have recommendations, but it might help others to know which direction he's travelling in.

Hope it gets sorted for him soon.

MT2017 · 29/11/2019 17:49

As pp says, if they won't bring him home surely they mean they will take him to a garage near you?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 29/11/2019 17:50

How far from home is he?

speakout · 29/11/2019 17:51

Why do you need to pick him up?
RAC and AA both provide emergency membership which could mean transport home.

MoaningMinniee · 29/11/2019 17:51

I've been with either AA or Green Flag and DP with RAC for donkey's years, the tow home if they can't fix it by the roadside has ALWAYS been to either home, your destination if it's something you really need to get to eg a wedding, or a garage you specify. Even if that's 260 miles... (my personal record)

araiwa · 29/11/2019 17:51

This is what happens when you cheap out on stuff

Can he pay for an upgrade to get him taken home? Otherwise yeah theyll take him somewhere local to where he is which is probably closed and will be all weekend

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 29/11/2019 17:52

Harbour garage in Portishead are great but theyll6be closing now.

speakout · 29/11/2019 17:53

MoaningMinniee

Exactly. I don't even pay for RAC cover. I use my Tesco vouchers which are tripled and provides cover for OH and I to have car towed and us taken home.

ScreamingValenta · 29/11/2019 17:53

If it's only a basic roadside policy, they won't take the car beyond a garage local to the area of the breakdown. He might be able to pay for an upgrade, though.

RollOnNextYear · 29/11/2019 17:57

Some policies state garage local to home. Some Local to the location.. Maybe check first?

I don't bother with cover tbh. In fairness I never travel more than 30.miles radius with the dcs or alone. Dh is a. Mechanic and knows lots of recovery people so never had the need. And hopefully never will.

Hope he gets home quick and not waiting ages.

NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 17:57

Southbound.

They said a garage local to where he is.

NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 17:59

RAC do a 50 mile tow.

He's 80 miles from home.

Try this...

www.drivevauxhall.co.uk/locations/181/drive-vauxhall-bristol-north/

They are great. Used them several times when we had cars that broke down at awkward times. They can keep it in storage (they used to, so check), they will then contact you with an idea of what needs doing.
But it could be Monday.

NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 18:00

He'd assumed he'd got a decent breakdown over but didn't really check... hindsight is beautiful... but now's not the time for pointing out the error of his skinflint ways.

OP posts:
StoneColdSaidSo · 29/11/2019 18:02

Can they not tow him the 50 miles hen, at least it will be closer to home and cost less for him to get back?

Darkstar4855 · 29/11/2019 18:02

RAC should tow him anywhere in the UK unless he has their most basic policy which is a 10 mile tow only.

NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 18:03

I just want him off the hard shoulder at this moment... I'm a bit worried about his safety.

I've got two tired young children that i will likely have to drive a 160 mile round trip with tonight.

OP posts:
NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 18:04

He doesn't have RAC cover but the RAC offer an emergency cover that tows 50 miles.

OP posts:
NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 18:05

I did suggest to get the recovery service to tow him as far as they are willing and then get the RAC to take him another 50 miles!

OP posts:
greenlavender · 29/11/2019 18:07

He could arrange other cover couldn't he? That would save you a trip & probably wouldn't cost much more.

StoneColdSaidSo · 29/11/2019 18:09

That’s probably the best idea, the closer to home the better.

partysong · 29/11/2019 18:09

Can't he stay in a hotel for tonight and you get him tomorrow / especially if there is a chance the car could be fixed tomorrow?

NannaNoodleman · 29/11/2019 18:10

The recovery service he has won't do an upgrade.

RAC do a 50 mile tow on a temporary membership.

AA only tow to a local garage if you're not a member.

OP posts:
StoneColdSaidSo · 29/11/2019 18:11

Yeah, the hotel sounds like a better idea. Get it towed, check in to the nearest cheap hotel, go pick him up tomorrow.
