AIBU in thinking plates should be white?

I would permit a thin pattern around the edge, but pictures where the food goes is unacceptable. Plates that are totally coloured are also out.

You should be concentrating on the food rather than some foliage, weird shapes, hunting scene or whatever, partly hidden underneath it. And coloured plates could lead to unpleasant clashes. Imagine eating some purple food from an orange plate!

It's only a short step from coloured plates to eating off slates.

I have a horror of anything white. I hate white walls, towels, bedding, plates. Always looks so clinical and dull.

@Mysterian Nah white's boring. Though I am not a fan of hugely patterned plates.

And Vienna Sausage Shortcakes that you posted at 20.02 wouldn't look appealing on ANY plate. They look like the cat ate several spring rolls, then drank a bowl of milk, then vomited on the plate.

I have white plates but coloured breakfast bowls - mainly dark blue. Pasta bowls are off white/ cream colour.

I agree about the plates but don’t think it applies to bowls.

Although come to think of it cake plates can and should be patterned (I don’t have any but they would be if I had them!)

Yep, agreed. And that goes for bowls, saucers, mugs and tea cups in my cupboards. It looks so sparkly clean and neat and gahhhh! Perfection.

I generally prefer white plates. Pretty patterned colourful plates are traditional for tea services and dessert plates though, I think, and seem to work well for those sorts of things.

I was surprised in hospital that the already unappetising food was served on royal blue plates and mustard yellow bowls. Like they made an extra effort to make it look awful!
