AIBU in thinking plates should be white?

I would permit a thin pattern around the edge, but pictures where the food goes is unacceptable. Plates that are totally coloured are also out.

You should be concentrating on the food rather than some foliage, weird shapes, hunting scene or whatever, partly hidden underneath it. And coloured plates could lead to unpleasant clashes. Imagine eating some purple food from an orange plate! Shock

It's only a short step from coloured plates to eating off slates.

As long as they are circular I don't care about the colour.

Squares, rectangles, wooden boards, pieces of slate etc etc = 😡😡. Have a look at We Want Plates.

FurryDogMother · 26/11/2019 20:09

I always buy white plates etc - even if some get broken, new ones match, more or less! Food looks best on plain white plates too - but I've inherited a full (massive, 12 person) dinner service from my parents, which has some kind of twee anemone design on it, plus their everyday-use Indian tree patterned stuff. We've also got red plates and bowls from when I was trying to encourage my Dad (with dementia) to eat, and some yellow ones ditto (there's a theory that red and yellow plates make it easier for people with dementia to see and eat the food). It's all a bit of a mish-mash, but a lot of it holds memories, and so it's precious to me :)

I love white plates. Sadly, my DH disagrees so we have a dinner set in a pale shade of duck egg. Food doesn't look awful on our plates, but I often think it would look better on white!

astralweaks · 26/11/2019 20:10

That stuff on the orange plate looks vile.

BerwickLad · 26/11/2019 20:11

Bold coloured plates are very 90s aren't they? My first ever plate set was bold coloured, purchased in said decade.

Duck egg makes me think of municipally supplied crockery - the kind you would find in community centres and church halls.

I am old.

AllergicToAMop · 26/11/2019 20:11

I got theseGrin
We absolutely love them. And! We actually eat less because plate doesn't look empty (that's why we bought them tbh. Well that and because they are pretty)

My favourite place for breakfast has a rather eclectic selection of crockery.
Often your tea will come in a royal wedding tea cup and jubilee teapot.
The best thing is the the breakfast often comes on a plate which celebrates a year with the year in the middle and various pictures around it. It’s fun trying to guess the year before you finish the pot of beans covering it up.

TaxFool · 26/11/2019 20:13

You'll have to have a word with my teal plates and bowls. I don't have any white crockery Shock

That food looks disgusting. The plate isn't the issue.

My duvet covers aren't white. None of my towels are either.

I don't own any glasses. I have lots of mugs and some plastic tumblers that came free with something Blush

I'll see myself out Grin

Plate drowns out food again.

I like white plates too!

Mysterian · 26/11/2019 20:20

And those funny earthenware plates with the weird texture are wrong too. Luckily not many survived the 70s.

Why are there penises on that orange plate?🤮

Mysterian · 26/11/2019 20:22

Er...they're blue flowers Fish.

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/11/2019 20:24

You don’t own glasses @TaxFool? What do you drink wine or gin from?

iklboo · 26/11/2019 20:34

@Mysterian - I think fish means the other orange plate. The one with severed pustulent penises on.

Mysterian · 26/11/2019 20:36

I'm 85% sure they're not penises, but if you wanted to serve penises you would do it on a coloured plate to distract the eater.

@Mysterian

I love white and I am hundred percent behind you. We all go through different stages in life though and our taste in colour and home decoration can vary.

I must say I find flower patterns on plates very unpleasant to look at. Very much dislike black and red tableware combinations, too. It looks cheap and makes me cringe.

I also don't like cheap cutlery. Having said that you don't need to be rich to have good taste and shop around to find some elegant tableware sets. It's not all about money

Stickybeaksid · 26/11/2019 20:39

White and circular. The end.

BennyTheBall · 26/11/2019 20:44

I agree. They should be circular too.

iklboo · 26/11/2019 20:46

I also don't like cheap cutlery

Is it weird I have to find the balance point of cutlery before I buy it or eat with it?

MeganChips · 26/11/2019 20:49

I opened this thread thinking “who cares?” but after seeing your pictures I’m now agreeing with you!

All my plates are white but I have been hankering after a different set for a while, maybe not now.

KilljoysDutch · 26/11/2019 20:49

I have these and black square ones. The forest ones keep me entertained while waiting a hundred hours for DS6 to finish eating. YABU Grin

Our plates are off white but they are square so possibly not acceptable.

Kids use a variety of charity shop plates as they break so many plates, bowls etc they aren’t allowed to use my nice ones!

These beauties are what I grew up with. My mum gifted them to me for the kids to use. From a full dinner set we are left with one side plate!

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 26/11/2019 20:51

None of my plates or that match all were bought from a charity chop. Never had an issue eating from them

SimonJT · 26/11/2019 20:52

You wouldn’t survive here, my plates are a random assortment of plates I have stolen from various houseshares I lived in over the years.
