AIBU in thinking plates should be white?

I would permit a thin pattern around the edge, but pictures where the food goes is unacceptable. Plates that are totally coloured are also out.

You should be concentrating on the food rather than some foliage, weird shapes, hunting scene or whatever, partly hidden underneath it. And coloured plates could lead to unpleasant clashes. Imagine eating some purple food from an orange plate! Shock

It's only a short step from coloured plates to eating off slates.

@Inebriati @AllergicToAMop

I LOLd at this too. Grin

Especially after the 'slate plates' comments. Grin

I feel validated and ashamed reading this thread. I do like and have white plates. But I also have slate placemats and coasters. Is slate OK if its only a backdrop to the plain white plate?

I definitely prefer white plates to patterned or coloured, YANBU, YABVVVVR.

More important than plates though - I cannot drink from cups or mugs that don't have white insides.
Patterns on the outside of the mug are usually OK (but if a mug has pictures or words that refer to coffee, I can't use it for tea and viceversa, and I have a mug with a picture of an orange slice that I can only use for Earl or Lady Grey).
I once started work in an office where there was a list in the kitchen of how people took their tea/coffee. One person had written in the notes column that he would only drink from mugs with white insides - A Soulmate!

This is the kind of thing we eat of at home

Actually I have that first orange plate. Vintage FiestaWare in (IIRC) tangerine. I also have Rose, Yellow, Sea Mist Green, and Periwinkle Blue. I mix and match them depending on my mood. No one has ever complained about the food I serve on them, but then again I never serve severed penises in (ahem) 'white sauce' with green beans. You could serve that on Havilland china and it would still look unappetizing!

I agree that fine china should be white, off-white, or bone and have a delicate pattern or edging.

sashh · 27/11/2019 02:23

I also think that tea and coffee both taste nicer when in mugs with a white interior (I'm not particularly concerned about whatever colours/patterns/pictures are on the outside)

Tea in a mug? I have precisely one tea cup, I mostly drink coffee from mugs, but my tea I have in a cup on a saucer.

safariboot · 27/11/2019 02:37

YANBU. I'm sure a fancy chef could tell me certain foods taste better off a dark plate, but for everyday use it should be mostly white. I like a colourful or patterned lip but not a dark colour all over.

We got this dinner set recently, haven't actually unboxed it yet, the design is going onto the middle a bit but I think it's reasonable. www.argos.co.uk/product/8668217

Also agree that mugs should be white inside. It's impossible to tell if the tea's made correctly in a dark mug. On the other hand I am OK with glass, we have a pair and they get used interchangably with the rest of our mug collection.

BitOfFun · 27/11/2019 02:39

Ah, I love a bit of blue willow pattern!

DontCallMeShitley · 27/11/2019 03:12

@MitziK I have those Beefeater plates but they are round and never used, been packed away for years.

My plates are white, restaurant grade ones, resilient. My mugs are white, or white with blue but always white inside and always have to make good tea.

I loathe earthenware plates and anything brown or orange, 70's patterns and coloured, unless it is blue and white and even then it has to be minimal pattern.

You need to be able to see if the plates are clean so heavy patterns in food colours just don't work.

1forAll74 · 27/11/2019 03:14

I own four white dinner plates, but they all have a central picture of different birds on them,so therefore, I have to arrange the food on them around the birds, and as my meals are all quite colourful, the food usually matches the colour of all the birds plumage. !

SexlessBoulderBelly · 27/11/2019 03:38

Ha. I like this thread.

Wasn’t it suggested that dieters eat their food from a red plate? Apparently you eat less from a red plate, good for portion control.

I have two sets of crockery. White with a black rim. also a set that is slate grey all over. Very plain and basic but I do fancy just a nice white set now....

kateandme · 27/11/2019 03:44

we have so much bloody trouble finding decent white stuff!
the plates now seem to have a big rim and no innard where you actually put your food.
cereal bowls seem to have gone to a pathetic size.WE WANT A FULL BOWL OF CEREAL.or are a silly shape.half of which dont it in the dishwasher properly.
we have had square.didnt last long.
and then the smaller plates or too small and never good enough for lunch and a sandwhich.
oh and then dont get me started on finding the right mugs.that feel right to hold.(cosy) and just the right rim thickness.
ooooooo and having to find the right cutlery.with the right weight to the bit you hold.
haha.we.are.maaaad.

Snaleandthewhail · 27/11/2019 03:49

When I was a kid my sister and I would try to cut our feed so we were hopping the heads off the characters in the willow pattern plates we had.

Yanbu but I suspect the All Things White look will date as much as the seventies animal ceramics.

Oh and square plates are naff. On several wedding lists in the early noughties...

Trebla · 27/11/2019 06:25

Plates with the word of the intended food item printed on them. Now that's really upsetting.

bbyj2019 · 27/11/2019 07:45

@Aderyn19 best comment goes to you about the chip baskets 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Mysterian · 27/11/2019 10:07

@Fluffiest But I also have slate placemats and coasters. Is slate OK if it's only a backdrop to the plain white plate?

Coasters and placemats are acceptable, however, putting a morally decent white plate on top of another coloured plate is not. It's embarrassing for the white plate. It's saying you don't fully trust it to do it's job properly.

Me and DP don't even eat off plates (runs away in shame) Grin We use those big flat bowls (like pasta bowls) as we eat a lot of sloppy food (curries, stews etc.) Also we hardly eat at the table unless we have people over. We do have a couple of big plates that we use for fish and chip nights (red). All our bowls are in pairs of 2 but don't all match if that makes sense and none are plain white. I also don't own any white bedding or towels, it's all purple or various patterns/colours. I guess I'm a heathen Grin I do agree about mugs with dark interiors though; I like to be able to see the colour of my coffee. I feel a bit ashamed now Blush

dayslikethese1 · 27/11/2019 10:32

But in my defence I have no DC and therefore no requirement to set any kind of example Grin

AllergicToAMop · 27/11/2019 10:33

@dayslikethese1 I am there with you. I eat so much food from bowls.
And takeaways are eaten directly from the containersGrin Taste the best imho

SerenDippitty · 27/11/2019 10:39

Well I love my Portmeirion botanic garden plates so there.

Mysterian · 27/11/2019 18:30

@SerenDippitty I'm sure you do, but for the sake of society you need to give them up.

Plates should be plain, white and round.
