AIBU in thinking plates should be white?

I would permit a thin pattern around the edge, but pictures where the food goes is unacceptable. Plates that are totally coloured are also out.

You should be concentrating on the food rather than some foliage, weird shapes, hunting scene or whatever, partly hidden underneath it. And coloured plates could lead to unpleasant clashes. Imagine eating some purple food from an orange plate! Shock

It's only a short step from coloured plates to eating off slates.

Ours have a blue pattern on a white background. There are some swirls and two people in the middle.

Our other plates are a light cream colour with a gold border. They apparently can’t be put in the dishwasher (due to the previously mentioned border, apparently...) so we use them rather rarely.

Anyhow. You’re unreasonable imo, yes.

I have teal square plates Grin and very flowery blue and white ones.

YABU. We have these plates as white ones are so dull.

Coasters and placemats are acceptable, however, putting a morally decent white plate on top of another coloured plate is not. It's embarrassing for the white plate. It's saying you don't fully trust it to do it's job properly.

This made me chuckle. I have no white plates. See above post. GrinGrinGrin it's even worse as my coloured plates are SQUARE.

My plates have unicorns on them. Literally what happens when you let your 10 year old unicorn obsessed daughter and DH choose new plates 😂🤔

spacepyramid · 27/11/2019 19:18

Not sure why the picture didn't post, sorry. Trying again.

Oh I am firmly in the white plates camp. Firmly. Embedded in fact. I do not mind a colored serving platter as long as it does not clash - so all orange, or the like - but it has to make sense.

Now bowls on the other hand. Bowls do not need to be white. I like a colored bowl. This is my current favorite for cereal, soup, or whatever. Lovely feel and great shape.

Don't get me started on cups. I have one I love. One. Out of about 50 we own. It gets washed and reused all day long.

@TwatCat How old is that red Nescafé mug?

OhTheRoses · 27/11/2019 22:13

I eventually replaced Denby Memories, beige, in about 2004. The remains of it went to uni with the dc. Replaced it with classic white stuff.

The smart dining room china is very pretty Wedgewood Bianca - now discontinued. Started collecting in 1987ish and finished the set when we got married.

My mum has lots of blue on white and I really like it.

Does anyone remember the 80s hexagonal number edged in pink and green. So wished I'd waited and bought that instead of the Denby Blush

SoftSheen · 27/11/2019 22:16

YANBU. I do have some festive plates with Christmas trees on though

AcrossthePond55 · 27/11/2019 22:48

Oooh! SoftSheen!!! Xmas china! Yes, I have a full set of Xmas china with trees on them! White background though, so I expect I'll be given a pass. 😆

TwatCat I've seen those blue flowery plates sell for a small fortune on ebay.

safariboot · 28/11/2019 03:15

@userxx I can't speak for TwatCat, but we have a similar mug I think we got last year.

Plain white plates are lovely, I particularly like Sophie Conran's white service but I must say I also like some patterns. I had some of the ubiquitous M&S Harvest/Autumn when I was first married. Sadly the cupboard in my first house contained the crockery fell off the wall and I lost everything including some lovely. Denbyware in mustard, so fashionable then.

These days we have these, bought them in Clarks Shopping Village. I love the pale pink Up the Garden Path as it has a quote from The Importance of Being Earnest. If using Dawn Chorus the food must be served so the plate is the 'right way up'!

At Yuletide out come some beautiful old plates, bowls and tureens, edged in red and gold, passed on from a friend's grandmother. I love them, they are very delicate so only use them at Yule/Christmas and New Year.

A plate is nothing more than something that gets food dumped on it to me. Mind you, I'm not much interested in food either, I just eat it if I'm hungry.

And white looks cleaner. Hygienic. Pure. Precisely the suface I want to eat my KFC off.

YABU when you put hygienic and KFC in the same sentence GrinGrin

Lilyflower1 · 28/11/2019 06:01

I have white plates for every day and Spode Blue Italian for best. However, I have to agree that some food looks more elegant and appetising on white plates. I always put smoked salmon and fancy seafood on white plates, for example.

Windygate · 28/11/2019 06:09

@MitziK I've got a full set of those at the back of the cupboard!
