AIBU in thinking plates should be white?

I would permit a thin pattern around the edge, but pictures where the food goes is unacceptable. Plates that are totally coloured are also out.

You should be concentrating on the food rather than some foliage, weird shapes, hunting scene or whatever, partly hidden underneath it. And coloured plates could lead to unpleasant clashes. Imagine eating some purple food from an orange plate! Shock

It's only a short step from coloured plates to eating off slates.

@iklboo

Me too. I have to hold it for a while and test. I am very particular with the weight of the knife!

MidnightMystery · 26/11/2019 20:54

I have white plates and I think they look like something you'd have at a BnB BlushNot a fan.

Pajamagirl · 26/11/2019 20:54

Yes always white
Including towels bedlinen and phones
I hate dark coloured plates

TwatCat · 26/11/2019 20:55

Harvester once served my dinner on a baking tray. A BAKING TRAY!!! I sent them to get me a plate. And don't get me started on their banana leaf phase.

theoriginalmadambee · 26/11/2019 20:59

Okay, so I have bad taste Grin. The dish is mega mussel denmark, the plate is our everyday plates, antiques and damn hard to find.

Nah, I’m not boring.

BigFatLiar · 26/11/2019 21:04

Plates should have paw patrol characters (or Frozen)

MitziK · 26/11/2019 21:07

I agree with you, OP. A band of colour/delicate pattern just around the edge where there isn't any food is fine, but the actual main body of the crockery should be white in my opinion.

I also think that tea and coffee both taste nicer when in mugs with a white interior (I'm not particularly concerned about whatever colours/patterns/pictures are on the outside) and, if I had my way, the time, money and a DP who could wash things up without having to bang them together like a pair of cymbals the ability to care for the items properly, I'd happily have a high quality, delicate bone china tea and dinner set, together with crystal glasses and expensive cutlery that won't be used in lieu of an appropriately sized screwdriver.

But in the real world, I'll stick to my combination of Sainsbury's cutlery from 2002 and a few things nicked that found their way home after I left a barmaid job in the 1990s when I was skint, plus the M&S white plates with blue bands. And random glasses from IKEA or the pound shop.

lostandconfused2 · 26/11/2019 21:07

I love my white marble plates but I also love my black plates.

ThinkIamflyingundertheradar · 26/11/2019 21:11

And walls should be magnolia and sofas should be grey.

Not on my watch!

MitziK · 26/11/2019 21:14

Oh - I have to make a confession. I would make an exception for one particular set of plates. They were sold in the 1970s, are a strange, elongated hexagonal shape, have a fluted edge and the trippiest cows in existence in shades of neon in the centre - the actual background was still white, however.

They're Christmas Plates in my mind. Only ever came out for Christmas Day and I loved them mainly because a bigger plate meant more food. Haven't seen them for years, but if I ever do, I'm getting them.

ETA: found them! I NEED a set. Along with a pair of blackbird pie funnels, some Babycham glasses and the tacky as hell hunting scene shot glasses that never left the confines of the bureau once in over 50 years, so I had to look at them through the dusty glass sliding doors.

White with patterns is fine. I love my naff Portmerion Botanic Garden pieces.

But colours, especially dark colours are not ok. I've got one Willow Pattern plate and I don't even like eating off that. I just use it for cakes.

speakout · 26/11/2019 21:20

I agree OP. All crockery in my house is plain white. Has been that way for years. If anything gets broken then easy to buy more white. Simple, minimal, just how I like it.

isseywith4vampirecats · 26/11/2019 21:24

we have dark green denby crockery and i dont care what colour the plates are i know the food i have cooked is good

theoriginalmadambee · 26/11/2019 21:24

@MitziK that certainly is the 70ties on a plate Grin. Shows the owner has a sense of humor, too.

BennyTheBall · 26/11/2019 21:29

This thread has reaffirmed - anything but white is just wrong.

I also have to have perfect cutlery. The tines on the forks have to be exactly long enough and it has to be weighty and ergonomic.

Ditto stemware on the table - has to be just so.

RedSheep73 · 26/11/2019 21:33

Grin My Rosemary Conley instructor used to swear by eating off red plates - she said it makes you eat less!

cakeandchampagne · 26/11/2019 21:35

I only like(d) white plates.
But now I also want @KilljoysDutch ‘s forest plates! Smile

AlexaAmbidextra · 26/11/2019 21:35

Mysterian

It’s the penis on the orange plate that puts me off rather than the colour. 😂

Ohyesiam · 26/11/2019 21:39

I looooove ceramics. White is a long term favourite.
Totally agree with op about good quality cutlery. I got a £150 Habit set for £50 when out local one closed down. I LOVE it.

JaceLancs · 26/11/2019 21:40

I really take no notice what I’m eating off - I just consider the food itself
This comes from someone who collects pottery

FlamedToACrisp · 26/11/2019 21:41

Apparently food looks more appetising on yellow plates - but can I find any? Only dire mustard-colour ones, or ones that are banana-coloured at £50 for 4 - stuff that! So I am sticking with my tired old plates with herbs around the edge until I find some I like better - but I did treat myself to these gorgeous Christmas plates from Wayfair. www.wayfair.co.uk/kitchenware-tableware/pdp/waterside-holly-18-piece-dinnerware-set-service-for-6-hje10038.html?st=1

I like kitsch vintage plates but they're an awful price. We also have the Enchanted Forest plates from Asda, and I've just seen some bowls and mugs with octopuses on.

CareOfPunts · 26/11/2019 21:44

I’ve always preferred white, we’ve always had white but a while back I bought white ones with a pattern and do actually quite like them.

Now mugs with coloured insides, that’s a step too far. No.

AllergicToAMop · 26/11/2019 21:49

I think that no matter what colour of plates each of us likes, we can put our differences aside and concentrate on the real enemy are...

Slate plates
