To ask about Jeremy Corbyn and anti semitism

So having decided to vote labour I had a conversation with a Jewish work colleague who said she couldn't vote for him, hated him even. It took me a few seconds and then i realised why. I said that I had stuck my fingers in my ears and my head in the sand somewhat about this, hoping it was just the media etc.

We didn't get into it as I could see she was uncomfortable.

So can someone tell me if and why he is an anti-semite? It doesn't sit well with me to vote for someone like that but I desperately want the Tories gone and my politics is definitely to the left.

I'm honestly not being goady and I know I could google but i wouldn't know where to start to get an unbiased view

I doubt your post will be deleted.

Oh but it was @PeterOhanrahahanrahan you’ll never guess why.

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 21/11/2019 14:42

@Noblegiraffe another sockpuppet I guess?

noblegiraffe · 21/11/2019 14:44

There is also the Jewish Voice for Labour, which is diametrically opposed to the views of Labour Friends of Israel

Jewish Voice for Labour again. People really should look into them before bandying their name around as a group actually worthy of respect.

The twitter account @jvlwatch is a good place to start.

andyoldlabour · 21/11/2019 14:46

"This is how antisemitism is being propagated on the Left today."

Criticism of the actions of the Israeli state is not antisemitism. Trying to conflate it with genuine hatred of Jewish people is an insult to those people.

noblegiraffe · 21/11/2019 14:49

Yup, Peter.

ArseDarkly · 21/11/2019 14:52

Doh! Forgot to post the link before re Finkelstein -normanfinkelstein.com/2019/02/26/that-labour-antisemitism-crisis-in-numbers/ Jewish scholar and expert on Israel/Palestine, writing about Labour

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 21/11/2019 14:54

andyoldlabour Criticism of a country on the same terms as we criticize other countries is not racist. But extrapolating conspiracy theories which draw on historic stereotypes of malevolent Jewish power and influence, absolutely is.

You would do better to engage with the content of posts than repeating the same stock phrases from the JVL drumbeat.

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 21/11/2019 14:56

And yes, we know who Norman Finkelstein is.

Halleli · 21/11/2019 15:00

Criticism of the actions of the Israeli state is not antisemitism

Of course it isn’t. Not one person here is arguing that it is.

What is antisemitism is:

  • Devoting your entire attention to criticising the world’s only Jewish state, and ignoring the far worse atrocities being perpetrated by other states.
  • Using antisemitic language and conspiracy theories to criticise Israel.
  • Comparing Issrael to the Nazis.
  • Holding Israel to a higher standard than other countries

It would seem that @jvlwatch are very critical of Jewish people who criticise Zionism in any way - Moche and Daniel Machover, Geoffrey Bindman QC, Tony Greenstein, Jackie Walker etc.
Am I therefore to understand, that any Jewish person who criticises the state of Israel or makes negative comments about Zionism is either an antisemite or "self hating" Jew, or maybe both?

Halleli · 21/11/2019 15:04

Just one example. The UN General Assembly.

These are the numbers of resolutions it has passed condemning some of the world’s worst human rights’ abusers:

🇰🇵 North Korea 1
🇻🇪 Venezuela 0
🇲🇲 Myanmar 1
🇵🇰 Pakistan 0
🏴‍☠️ Hamas 0
🇩🇿 Algeria 0
🇹🇷 Turkey 0
🇷🇺 Russia 1
🇨🇳 China 0
🇶🇦 Qatar 0
🇸🇦 Saudi 0
🇸🇾 Syria 1
🇮🇷 Iran 1

What about Israel, you ask?

Twenty. Twenty resolutions against the world’s only Jewish state.

And the ironic thing is, most of them are proposed by the countries listed above to distract from their own crimes.

It’s scapegoating Jews. And it’s been happening for millennia.

noblegiraffe · 21/11/2019 15:14

@andyoldlabour Jackie Walker from your list has been expelled from the Labour Party for antisemitism. Given how rarely that actually happens, do you think it’s right or wrong that jvlwatch might be interested in her activities as a member of Jewish Voice for Labour?

BrunoMindhorn · 21/11/2019 15:38

@Halleli Wow, that's an eye-opener about the UN. Can't believe the imbalance - 20 resolutions against Israel and only 1 for North Korea!

The only possible conclusion is that the UN is institutionally antisemitic. Very depressing.

This seems to be an interesting gathering together of AS incidents/overtones involving JC

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 21/11/2019 15:44

Tony Greenstein has also been expelled from the Labour Party.

And you need to be more careful in your use of the word Zionism. It does not mean "criticism of Israel" as you think (or pretend to think) it does.

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 21/11/2019 15:46

I mean that "criticism of Zionism" does not mean "criticism of Israel".

MuthaFunka61 · 21/11/2019 15:52

@PeterOhanrahahanrahan.
Yup,that's exactly how I see it

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 21/11/2019 15:57

Twenty. Twenty resolutions against the world’s only Jewish state.

WTF.

Halleli · 21/11/2019 15:58

(I should say - that’s 20 so far this year)

Halleli · 21/11/2019 15:58

The most recent was proposed by North Korea two days ago. The countries voting for it included Canada.

"why did Jews blow up a hotel and kill my uncle and 90 other souls,"

Why do you say Jews did this? Are you blaming all Jews for this? Should I blame all Irish people and all Muslims for bombing and killing in my town, Manchester?
Are you serious?

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 21/11/2019 16:20

Rldad

I am sorry that a family member of yours died, but "Jews" didn't do it.

Why are you blaming all Jews for it? Do you realise that the world's only Jewish state has diplomatic relations with Germany, even though a few years before the King David Hotel bombing, the German country murdered millions of Jews? People lost entire families.

If Israelis don't hate all Germans today, then you can stop holding all Jews everywhere responsible for the death of one great-uncle.

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 21/11/2019 16:34

You are a case study in left antisemitism.

And you think going on anti NF marches in the 1970s makes you a non racist person. Jesus wept.

Screenshotted and reported.

malificent7 · 21/11/2019 16:45

I thought it stemmed from criticism of the Israeli government who treated Palestinians awfully . Apparently any criticism of Israel is anti semetic.
