To ask about Jeremy Corbyn and anti semitism

So having decided to vote labour I had a conversation with a Jewish work colleague who said she couldn't vote for him, hated him even. It took me a few seconds and then i realised why. I said that I had stuck my fingers in my ears and my head in the sand somewhat about this, hoping it was just the media etc.

We didn't get into it as I could see she was uncomfortable.

So can someone tell me if and why he is an anti-semite? It doesn't sit well with me to vote for someone like that but I desperately want the Tories gone and my politics is definitely to the left.

I'm honestly not being goady and I know I could google but i wouldn't know where to start to get an unbiased view

I don't think Corbyn is a anti Semite, some of the people and momentum definitely are.

araiwa · 16/11/2019 18:15

Hes not

The fact that rightwing press are trying to use it is laughable

If you want a party of racists you should look at the right wing tory party

GlitchStitch · 16/11/2019 18:15

There is a thread here discussing this issue that might be interesting to you.

www.thejc.com/comment/leaders/to-all-our-fellow-british-citizens-1.491812 Not sure it’s necessarily ‘unbiased’ but gives you an idea

recrudesence · 16/11/2019 18:17

Put it this way: Jeremy’s never met an anti-semite he didn’t like.

peanutbutterkid · 16/11/2019 18:18

I would like to know a bit more, too.
This is my summary understanding - I'm find if folk want to pick at it.
Seems like, From what I have read, JC never said or did anything directly anti-semitic.
But neither has he much condemned people who did say or do anti-semitic things. He hasn't stamped on people (some Labour party members) who endorse narratives (of how the world works) which incorporate anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.

JC has endorsed groups or campaigns where some of their members have openly anti-semitic views. not necessarily JC's buddies in these groups. So he would say it's not his friends, it's the friends of his friends who have disgusting views & who can police that?

I suppose JC could say he was taking the view that abhorrent opinions can be free speech not hate speech. The whole thing is blurred.

Ken Livingstone used to regularly insert foot in mouth with comments that were perceived as anti-Jewish. I guess there must be some other prominent Labour supporters who also said anti-semitic things.

CendrillonSings · 16/11/2019 18:20

Well at least you're open-minded, OP - that speaks well of you. The evidence for Labour antisemitism is overwhelming, but here's one recent story that stuck in my mind:

www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/jewish-labour-movement-wont-campaign-for-corbyn_uk_5dba8d6fe4b066da552c4e2b

The Jewish Labour Movement will not campaign for Jeremy Corbyn in the coming election and will support only a handful of MPs who have battled against anti-Semitism in the party.

Labour’s oldest affiliate organisation announced that for the first time in its 100-year history it would not be backing the party nationally because of the culture of anti-Jewish hate that had been “allowed to fester at all levels” since Corbyn became leader.

This is a Jewish group who have stuck with the Labour Party for 100 years, campaigning for Attlee and Foot, but who now cannot tolerate the antisemitism Corbyn has allowed to infest the Labour Party. I don't think they're lying.

Armadillostoes · 16/11/2019 18:22

Corbyn and his close circle are most definitely Anti-Semitic. Shame on posters trying to turn this into a left v right issue. I am a life-long Labour supporter but cannot vote for a racist.

People will try to deflect and claim that he has only been accused of Anti-Semitism for criticising Israeli policy. This is simply untrue. OF COURSE you can criticise the present government of Israel without being Anti-Semitic. Everyone intelligent knows this. Corbyn is accused of racism because he has repeated supported openly racist colleagues.

raisinseverywhere · 16/11/2019 18:32

Corbyn’s labour constantly talk about Israel and Palestine, but hardly mention all the other countries round the world with similar problems. It’s only Israel, and waving Palestinian flags at every event.

They also have encouraged antisemitic views to be normalised within the Labour Party. Even though some Conservatives may have some racist views, this is not something that is seen as normal, fair and justified views within the Party. Jewish people feel that antisemitics will become more bold if Labour win, and that real discrimination will become normal.

raisinseverywhere · 16/11/2019 18:32

And I am a lifelong Labour supporter. Politically homeless this year.

PierreBezukov · 16/11/2019 18:43

Momentum is anti-semitic and has deselected Jewish MPs.

Corbyn re-tweeted an anti-semitic mural which would not have been out of place in Nazi Germany.

Jeremy was at a meeting when Ruth Smeets was subject to anti-semitic abuse, reducing her to tears, and he did nothing.

Countless of Jewish employees of the Labour party have been persecuted and hounded out the party.

Watch the BBC Panorama expose.

dadshere · 16/11/2019 18:44

Corbyn is not now, nor ever has been an anti-semite. He is very much pro palestine, and the rights of the palestinian people to not be ground under the heel of an oppressive aprtheid regime, where what few rights they have can be removed on a whim, where innocent civilians and children can be shot, their houses destroyed and their land stolen from them. This attitude pisses of Zionists and the very well funded pro-israel lobby.

TheoriginalLEM · 16/11/2019 18:45

Thus has given me food for thought- thankyou. Makes me sad

You’d still be writing that if Jeremy personally ordered the suicide bombing of his local synagogue.

Pathetic straw man attempt duly noted.
In 2013, Corbyn was awarded the Gandhi International Peace Award for his "consistent efforts over a 30-year parliamentary career to uphold the Gandhian values of social justice and non‐violence"

In December 2017 he was awarded the Seán MacBride Peace Prize "for his sustained and powerful political work for disarmament and peace"

Yep, sounds like a bad 'un to me.

That's pushing it a bit about broadband! It couldn't be because he wants people to have access to the internet now, could it?

GlitchStitch · 16/11/2019 19:17

There are plenty of examples of Corbyn either being anti-Semitic himself or associating with and praising anti-Semites and these examples have nothing to do with Israel. The obsessive Corbyn fans who deny things that people can see for themselves is really bloody scary. It's like a cult.

KayakingOnDown · 16/11/2019 19:23

Er, no. Most Jewish people traditionally voted Labour.

KayakingOnDown · 16/11/2019 19:24

No, there is no research to back up 'Tories are more prejudiced against Jews'.

The disinformation on here is scary.

Etinox · 16/11/2019 19:26

Eugh. I really struggle with this. I think there are several things going on.

•Right wing press using anything to bash Labour and Corbyn specifically.

•within Labour, a cynical ‘there are more Muslims than Jews, so if some people believe we’re anti Semitic is that really so bad?’
•Cognitive Dissonance- an inability of Members of good faith to even considerer that other Labour Party members could be anti Semitic. (A little how CSA was ignored for generations because good and naïve people literally couldn’t countenance it.
•Internationalism and anti racism are in the bones of Labour so when we see a Labour Part member going against it, it’s easier to blame the points above.
