To ask about Jeremy Corbyn and anti semitism

So having decided to vote labour I had a conversation with a Jewish work colleague who said she couldn't vote for him, hated him even. It took me a few seconds and then i realised why. I said that I had stuck my fingers in my ears and my head in the sand somewhat about this, hoping it was just the media etc.

We didn't get into it as I could see she was uncomfortable.

So can someone tell me if and why he is an anti-semite? It doesn't sit well with me to vote for someone like that but I desperately want the Tories gone and my politics is definitely to the left.

I'm honestly not being goady and I know I could google but i wouldn't know where to start to get an unbiased view

There isn’t so many about Boris as there is a large number of unhappy ex labour voters on MN

Many of us have been party members and always voted labour and are angry and upset that not only do we have a questionable leader and those behind the scenes (Momentum) that Labour haven’t provided the opposition that the country desperately needs

It’s been shambolic and shameful

noblegiraffe · 16/11/2019 23:09

Oh look, a Jewish Voice For Labour link. Remember what Jon Lansman said about them - part of the problem with antisemitism in Labour.

And Sqwawkbox ffs. Had to delete an antisemitic tweet of their own.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 16/11/2019 23:13

@dadshere Aung Sang Su Kyii has a Nobel
Prize, I expect that's a lot of comfort to the Rohinge

GlitchStitch · 16/11/2019 23:14

I'm actually quote scared reading some of the comments on here - especially those wilfully misrepresenting events, so as to cast Corbyn as anti-Semitic. It seems critical thinking is on the wane.

What have people 'misrepresented' please?

SomeUsername · 16/11/2019 23:20

@noblegiraffe which show's you didn't even look at the link. The Jewish Voice for Labour link simply dissects and show's stat's from the antisemitism report.

Let me guess, with Jewish Voice for Labour, is it like when Corbyn spent Passover with Jewdas and the press proclaimed they were "the wrong sort of Jew" - which does smack of anti-Semitism, but that seemed to be ok?

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/jeremy-corbyn-attacked-for-celebrating-passover-with-jews-but-apparently-jewdas-are-the-wrong-sort-of-jews/03/04/

noblegiraffe · 16/11/2019 23:33

Oh Some I’ve read lots of links.

Like reading that the Jewish Voice for Labour member Dr Alex Scott Samuel who proposed the vote of no-confidence in Luciana Berger who quit the Labour Party because of bullying and antisemitism appeared on a David Icke sponsored radio show (which also hosted holocaust deniers) and spread Rothschild conspiracy theories.

I’ve also read the JVLWatch twitter account. Have you?

Livpool · 16/11/2019 23:46

I intend to vote Labour.

I agree that anti-Semitic views need to be removed from the party. And I think it needs to be - the same as anti-Islamic views need to be removed from the Conservative party. Unfortunately, racism is a problem in the UK and it permeates politics as it does the general population.

However - anti-Zionist (as PP have referred) is not the same as anti-Semitic.

Halleli · 17/11/2019 00:30

These comments were made to two known Zionists who were attending

A racist comment is still racist no matter how many members of an ethnic minority group you direct it at...

Accusing Jews of failing to integrate into the country they live in, and not being loyal to it, is a centuries-old antisemitic trope.

Just think about it. By your stupid logic, if I told a particular black British person to 'go back to Africa', then I wouldn't be being racist as my comments weren't addressed to black people as a whole.

Gribbie · 17/11/2019 00:54

zsazsajujuwhy did you put “Palestine” in quotes?

SeaWitchly · 17/11/2019 02:43

Ridiculous poster writing about what if Corbyn personally orders suicide bombing of local synagogue Hmm
I campaign with Labour and have never heard any anti-Semitic sentiment voiced in the ten years I have been a Labour member.

Ritascornershop · 17/11/2019 05:05

Someusername, do you understand what Zionism means? You seem to be saying it was okay to say it to “two known Zionists” as if being a Zionist was a crime. Zionism is the belief in the right of the Jews to live in their ancestral homeland. I can’t think of another group for whom wanting to live in their ancestral homeland is used as a slur.

I live in Canada and can’t open the link from Panorama’s page to watch the program. If anyone has a link that would work outside the U.K., please send it to me, I’m very keen to watch it.

AnnieTotach · 17/11/2019 07:20

87% of British Jews believe Jeremy Corbyn to be antisemitic. This is what's important, not running to some of the 13% who dont and saying 'see, here are some jews who dont the same way' and then disingenuously say 'oh, is this the wrong type of jew?'

For the jewish Chronicle to almost beg voters not to vote for corbyn is so unprecedented it shows the depth of fear that corbyn has aroused.

You may be a corbyn supporter but you cannot just dismiss the genuine fears of an entire minority community as based on 'slurs '. Jews are just as capable of critical thinking as others.

Excited0803 · 17/11/2019 08:17

In the early days when Corbyn was elected as leader of the Labour party, I thought he could bring a breath of fresh air into politics and presumed it was his anti-war stance that led him into so many issues. Early on, I read some individual examples from Labour supporters that were.problematic but clearly anti-Israel rather than anti-Semitic. Over the years things have got worse, much worse. Newly elected labour councillors and MP candidates have been publicly recorded as saying unconscionable things that have shocked me. They openly talk about Jewish conspiracies, some of them bizarrely deny the holocaust ever happened, a few even refer to Hitler. They are not talking about Israel, they are talking about Jewish people everywhere. Anyone who criticises the anti-semitism has been facing a tide of attacks and for MPs de-selection attempts; Luciana Berger, Margaret Hodge, Louise Ellman etc etc etc. 6 people have been jailed for different threats to Luciana Berger's family. As leader of the party Corbyn has not criticised these individuals, nor made efforts to ensure they are removed from the party he leads; very few have been sanctioned and some have been brought back into the fold after incredibly brief suspensions. By those actions Corbyn has endorsed the prejudice and hate. I'm baffled by it all, I don't understand where this hate has come from nor why it's been allowed to fester when Jewish people have added so much to the UK, it is shameful.

TheoriginalLEM · 17/11/2019 08:18

@myotherprofile - why would I start a thread asking about Boris Johnson when im not considering voting for him? I have no doubts about that.

Accusing Jews of failing to integrate into the country they live in, and not being loyal to it

On this point, I grew up in London alongside many Jewish people, who were all fully integrated into the local community and all loyal to the UK. It's ludicrous to suggest they are not, anyone saying this clearly doesn't know actual Jewish people, or perhaps just doesn't realise they're Jewish. I often don't know what religion someone is, or what country their parents are from, because it just doesn't come up in conversation with every single colleague and acquaintance.

MyOtherProfile · 17/11/2019 08:32

It's not all about you OP! It's about trends and publicity.

joolzfromyork · 17/11/2019 08:38

Just leaving this here (not mine but all true)

(wont contribute to this thread because we live in a truly Orwellian world where Black is White, Truth is False and a renowned anti Fascist & anti racist is cast as being an anti semite)

what a time to be alive ...

Boofay · 17/11/2019 08:55

I'm not sure if this will embed or not, but Question Time a few weeks ago
Jewish lady says "Corbyn is NOT anti-Semite"

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/11/2019 08:58

SomeUsername do you think Luciana Berger, Ruth Smeeth and Dame Margaret Hodge have been over sensitive in their fears

Do you think the number of MP’s who have quite the Labour Party due to the party not dealing with anti Semitism within the party have imagined it all or its a conspiracy against Corbyn

What would you say to these MP’s ?

And SeaWitchly you many not have come across or have heard any anti Semitic comments I am not sure if you are Jewish yourself but time and time again we hear reports from Jewish people who are supporters, members of the party and MP’s themselves have - surely their experience is as valid as yours

GlitchStitch · 17/11/2019 08:58

It's a shame you won't contribute to the thread joolz because I'm interested to know what examples posters have said about Corbyn are false. I did ask another poster earlier too, who said actions were being 'misrepresented' but didn't get a response.

Anyone who criticises the anti-semitism has been facing a tide of attacks

I made the mistake of having a look at some of the comments directed at Rachel Riley from so-called labour supporters. It was awful, a particular low was accusing her of doing an 'Anne Frank act'. She's also accused of being paid by Israel to spread lies. Sickening.

Boofay · 17/11/2019 09:01

And OP, please don't spoil your ballot when the Greens are available to vote for. No one should feel politically homeless when the Green Party is on the ballot.

GlitchStitch · 17/11/2019 09:07

The Greens of the Aimee Challenor debacle, who expelled members for raising safeguarding concerns and allow misogynist activists to run wild abusing women? And who despite being a supposed party of science and rational thought also claim some women have penises? No thanks.

Artesia · 17/11/2019 09:21

I suppose JC could say he was taking the view that abhorrent opinions can be free speech not hate speech. The whole thing is blurred.

He could, if he extended the same right of free speech to other issues. But he hadn’t. Speak freely on issues of gender, dare to suggest biological males are, indeed, men, and you will find yourself subject to disciplinary action. Clearly biological fact is way more shocking and abhorrent than antisemitism to the current Labour Party leadership.

Boofay · 17/11/2019 09:28

@GlitchStitch, fair enough, but please explain how all the other parties are 100% perfect and I'll take my vote away from the Greens.

GlitchStitch · 17/11/2019 09:41

They aren't, hence so many feeling politically homeless.
