Am I missing something here? Meghan Markle

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7679223/Prince-Harry-Meghan-Markle-not-spending-Christmas-Sandringham.html

Sorry for the Meghan Markle thread and DM link, but I have found this really amusing today.

Story out today saying Harry and Meghan apparently aren't spending Xmas with the Queen this year. Lots of comments below blaming Meghan, saying she's isolating Harry from his family, saying the Queen must be really upset. Everyone at work was chatting about it today saying similar.

Am I missing something? I mean we don't even know if it's true. But even if it is, aren't they entitled to spend Xmas as they please? She has her own mother she may want to see.

Ok I get that it's the Queen and it's the usual tradition but is it really a big deal?

Sorry, but who the hell wants to spend Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham.?
Sounds like a bloody nightmare
Hope Harry and Meghan enjoy their Christmas in California with Doria Ragland.

The80sweregreat · 13/11/2019 19:45

Hmm, wet windy Sandringham or sunny California with granny Doria , Archie?
Tough call.

BrendasUmbrella · 13/11/2019 19:51

I feel really sorry for her. I can't recall another - harmless - public figure who has inspired so much hate and venom. The Daily Mail goes after her practically every day. And it all comes down to the fact that they don't think she's good enough for Harry!. It's mind boggling. It did cross my mind that they would love it if Harry quit being a Royal and took his family to live in the States, that would provide sensationalist headlines, sales, and clicks for months...

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 13/11/2019 19:54

They did very well at the Rememberance services, no talking, they just looked the part and were appropriately solemn. An easy win and leaving on a high as everyone is pleased to see Harry at these events as he is former military.
All going great and then Stella McCartney has to try and use the event as an advert for her bloody coat - as if she doesn't get enough publicity from her dad. And then Hilary bloody Clinton arrives spewing a load of protective garbage about poor Meghan to get publicity for her new book. They need new friends.
As for Sandringham, Christmas with endless in-laws in an Agatha Christie style country house murder setting in full period costume, just why would anyone ever go?

DonKeyshot · 13/11/2019 19:55

What TellItLikeItReallyIs said up thread at 17.19.

I think it more telling that the unhappy couple chose not to go to Balmoral, probably because they knew they'd get an earful from Her Maj.

The royals live a life of privilege that mere mortals cannot begin to comprehend.

Does anyone really think they'll be spending time in Doria's house for Thanksgiving or any other celebration? They'll be in 6*+ accommodation conveniently provided by UK taxpayers, or one of their 'trusts', and she'll be invited to visit as when it suits them.

The real agenda is out there. Meghan wants to go into U.S politics and Harry will pave the way.

probably because they knew they'd get an earful from Her Maj.

They live right beside her, if she had an issue with them, why would she wait until Sandringham?

No ones going to Balmoral btw.

StoneofDestiny · 13/11/2019 20:11

they can walk away at any time from taking money from the public purse and ditch their titles and the vast privileges they bring. In this way they will instantly free themselves from the expectations of being 'royals', and be free to live off their own millions wherever they chose.

They have choices.

Just wish 'royalty', the anachronistic nonsense that it is, was a thing of the past.

Out there where Nostradamus? Hmm

EdWinchester · 13/11/2019 20:17

Hmmm - fusty old formal Christmas with the queen and rainy english weather or relaxed Californian Christmas in the sunshine and away from it all and the hideous press slagging you off as you leave church on Christmas day?

I know which I would choose.

LaurieMarlow · 13/11/2019 20:18

What’s that got to do with whether she goes to Granny in laws for Christmas?

Bluerussian · 13/11/2019 20:30

BrendasUmbrella, great post, spot on.

The80sweregreat · 13/11/2019 20:31

These threads always turn into ' republican v royalist ' agenda.

LaurieMarlow · 13/11/2019 20:35

Do they though?

In my experience lots of republicans end up standing up for Meghan because of the bashing she’s getting from royalists.

I’d get rid of them all in the morning, but in the meantime, let’s hold MM to the same standards as everyone else.

shartsi · 13/11/2019 20:35

They live next door to the queen in Windsor. Maybe they have dinner / breakfast with her every day and need a break at xmas.

Lightkeeper · 13/11/2019 20:37

Christmas at Sandringham may look nice, but it's a very regimented agenda. I very much doubt many of the DM commenters have those tiring days at work with back-to-back meetings with loads of people in each one.

It's not a coincidence the Royal Family is called ”The Firm”.

The80sweregreat · 13/11/2019 20:42

' the firm' sounds very sinister to me. Always has done.

StoneofDestiny · 13/11/2019 20:52

No idea why Meghan gets it in the neck more than the layabouts Philip, Edward, Andrew, Beatrice, Eugenie - who have lived off the backs of taxpayers all their lives and are hell bent on doing it. The ghastly personalities, attitudes and practices of Edward, Andrew and Philip are well documented and the absence of a work ethic from Kate is appalling.
Meghan has worked all her life and chosen to marry into a family famous for inherited privilege. She barely drew breath before the critics jumped on her.
However - I'm a Republican. We need to shift this nonsense off the backs of taxpayers once and for all.
My stance is they can walk away from it - as Anne did for her kids - then make their own way, cushioned as they are by the countless millions we've already provided royals with over the centuries.
It's hard to feel sorry for over privileged, endlessly holidaying, pampered royals - let the royal shower move to Jaywick and the public will leave them alone!

SunsetBoulevard3 · 13/11/2019 20:54

I think it's only a matter of time before they either decamp to the US permanently or a divorce is in the offing. It seems to be over before it really started.

The80sweregreat · 13/11/2019 20:59

Stone, good post and it's true that some of the others get away with some fishy/ dodgy stuff but because Meghan isn't a blond blue eyed English girl she is given a tough ride. She had earned her money over the years, a lot more than some of the others have!!

The80sweregreat · 13/11/2019 21:01

I like the idea of them all moving to Jaywick!
Where would they stable the horses though?

StoneofDestiny · 13/11/2019 21:16

theeightiesweregreat

sorted - leave ALL the royal trappings behind.

MissConductUS · 13/11/2019 21:31

California is a lovely place to celebrate Christmas. Good for her.

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/11/2019 21:39

Unlike some people I don’t think the criticism is due to racism . The media love to build someone up then knock them down ! I am old enough to remember the adverse comments about Princess Margaret having a much younger lover . Princess Diana wasn’t always idolised and the Duchess of York was renamed the Duchess of Pork! Etc etc . With Meghan I think she honestly didn’t realise what it would mean to be a member of the British Royal Family and has struggled to appreciate she is under scrutiny meaning that hypocrisy around using private planes whilst lecturing about climate change is not clever . The ridiculous secrecy around Archie’s birth didn’t help.
My issue with this extended trip to America is that they have 24/7 security meaning huge expense for flights , accommodation etc . I totally understand that Meghan wants to spend Christmas with her mother so why not invite her to their home ? Yes, the Cambridges have spent a couple of Christmases with her family but they are a few miles away , not on a different continent!

nildesparandum · 13/11/2019 21:43

The press hates Meghan and will do all they can to write stories about her that will invite spiteful comments from readers.
At the same time they elevate William's wife to the status of a saint.
It is a pity William and Harry have no more siblings to get married, as it is only that that will make the negative comments about Meghan stop then she will be considered a saint and the next sibling will get the venom.
The media need to hang their heads in shame

1Morewineplease · 13/11/2019 21:49

I understand that close members of the royal family are traditionally expected to spend Christmas with Her Maj .
To be honest I think that Harry and Meghan should do what they want , spend Christmas abroad and leave the media with nothing to talk about.
The thought of the media being in a frenzy over H and M over Christmas is just so boring.
