Am I missing something here? Meghan Markle

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7679223/Prince-Harry-Meghan-Markle-not-spending-Christmas-Sandringham.html

Sorry for the Meghan Markle thread and DM link, but I have found this really amusing today.

Story out today saying Harry and Meghan apparently aren't spending Xmas with the Queen this year. Lots of comments below blaming Meghan, saying she's isolating Harry from his family, saying the Queen must be really upset. Everyone at work was chatting about it today saying similar.

Am I missing something? I mean we don't even know if it's true. But even if it is, aren't they entitled to spend Xmas as they please? She has her own mother she may want to see.

Ok I get that it's the Queen and it's the usual tradition but is it really a big deal?

Not my bullshit, LaurieMarlow and Meghan Markle is far better qualified to join the political bullshitters than I am.

I wish everyone would just leave them alone.

Some people won’t be happy until the press destroys them and their marriage and then will smugly say they knew it would never last. Fucking horrible. A young newly wed couple with a baby. Leave them alone
...........
I quite agree, they are a lovely couple from what I can see - not perfect but no one is. They also have a lot of potential for good, similar aims and interests. Goodness me, how the press change towards people is dreadful!

Honestly I am so glad not to be a rich, famous person in the public eye where every little thing is scrutinised and publicised (rich but not well known would do :-) ).

I sincerely hope their marriage lasts, people have broken up for less than what they've had to put up with and, apart from very briefly answering questions on the S Africa documentary, they have said nothing about their treatment from the media.

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 13/11/2019 23:03

Maybe they will have Christmas at home. Perhaps they'll fly Doria back after Thanksgiving . . .but pretend they're in the US Wink

For the poster who said the press hate Meghan - of course they don't! Most journalists won't personally care about her at all and, professionally, she's just a source of copy.

It always surprises me when people don't understand how the media works at all.

LaurieMarlow · 13/11/2019 23:04

Not my bullshit

Well you claimed it first mystic meg Wink

I’ll remember that. When it totally, absolutely happens.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 13/11/2019 23:12

Was Diana idolised? Not so sure.

She became a saint as soon as she died, but the Sunday morning papers had to be pulled as they were so derogatory about her.

IMO the person who’s had it worse is Fergie. She too, was “a breath of fresh air”. Look how that ended!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/11/2019 23:14

apart from very briefly answering questions on the S Africa documentary ...

Nice attempt to play it down, but there was nothing brief about that - and anyway it wasn't so much about the length as what was said. You simply don't go to such a place and emphasise your own, much lesser problems, or at least not if you've got any sense

FWIW I agree they have a lot of potential for good, but I honestly don't think it'll be realised until they let go of some of the self absorption

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/11/2019 23:15

@ LaurieMarlow Princess Margaret was one person - security for the Sussex family is three times that . Assuming 8 hour shifts a minimum of 9 staff per day plus nanny etc . Andrew pays for Beatrice and Eugenie’s security when not on official duty .

wondering7777 · 13/11/2019 23:16

Very frequently where celebrities or high profile people are involved "the source" is operating as an endorsed shadow spokesman for the person.

@TellItLikeItReallyIs why doesn’t the person (Harry & Meghan in this instance) just get their spokesman to say whatever it is they want to be said outright, rather than getting them to be quoted as a source?

DonKeyshot · 13/11/2019 23:33

I may have claimed it first on this thread, but I certainly wasn't the first to propound the theory and you can dine on your words when it happens - which it will, LaurieMarlow

Meghan 'wants to make a difference' and she can't do that this side of the pond without taking a political stance which is an absolute no-go area for the royals.

If Meghan's travelling via Air Force One she can't be accused of using private jets and, as Trump has shown, you don't need to have been a Senator or even be remotely qualified to govern to become President of the U.S of A. Smile

New Mum and her family spend Christmas with her Mum.

There are so many threads on here about nightmare in laws who want to have the baby at their house for the first Christmas, when all the new Mum wants to do is nest with her little family, something which her own mother will support. Surely we should applaud the royal family for setting a good example.

GameofPhones · 13/11/2019 23:41

Our press has gone below the gutter into the sewer. If it's any consolation a shop near me is trying (without much success) to give 'The Sun' away. I told the assistant I might take it if I needed some for a cat litter box, but I don't at the moment. She was not surprised.

Here we go, another 924 posts about this

Including yours - or are you just so special that yours doesn't count?

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2019 23:44

I’m back from the pub. Has anyone said what Meghan has done wrong? How she has broken protocol or tried to change traditions? How she has failed in any of her royal duties?

Toomuchtrouble4me · 13/11/2019 23:50

I think if she's spending it with her mum - fair enough.
However If they are alone at frog Mansion then they ought to do the job they are very well rewarded for and plod to church with the rest of the firm so the royal watchers can get their pennies worth.

ChicCroissant · 13/11/2019 23:52

Amazing how you never notice those posts Bertrand and ask the same question in every thread.

it always surprises me when people manage to take such a superior tone whilst having their heads so far up their own backsides...

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 13/11/2019 23:57

I think it's understandable for the DoS to spend xmas day with her mum (although I agree security alone will mean probably staying in a 5* dwelling somewhere, so not necessarily buying that 100% and I'm sure they have other plans).

What, specifically, is she doing to amend them

Moaning about the British stiff upper lip being damaging, when if you bothered to get to know the country you're in, it is simply a euphemism for putting your best face on in the face of difficult circumstances. Then bleeding emotionally all over the camera as if this is the healthy (American) approach....

User0987613 · 13/11/2019 23:58

Maybe it has something to do with the alleged feud between the two brothers? A baby's first Christmas is a special event and tends to bring a family closer. In this scenario it sounds like W&K's kids will be running around in nan's home, while H&M are voluntarily isolating themselves from everyone. As a new mum, one would imagine Meghan having loads to discuss with veteran Kate but maybe there's awkwardness/jealousy between the two. Regardless of what the dynamics are, I'm sure the Queen would have enjoyed spending Christmas with her newest great-grandson and it seems a bit self-centered to bundle a new baby away on such a significant holiday.

And if they are going to the USA, just imagine the shitshow her father and batshit crazy half-siblings will do once they find out the entire royal Sussex family is within a car drive distance away. Tabloids will have a field day with that.

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2019 23:59

Amazing how you never notice those posts Bertrand and ask the same question in every thread.“

I ask because nobody ever answers. They just say things that all royal/privileged/rich people do as if they are Meghan specific. Even if another member of the royal family did the same thing the previous week!
So go on- give me 3.
Protocol breaches, breaks with tradition, failure to perform royal duties. I don’t mind which category- one of each- three from one. Whatever.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/11/2019 00:03

They answer. I guess the statement during the Africa tour was entirely in keeping with what we expect from senior royals?

Oh and endorsing (sychophantic) letters from mostly left leaning M.P.s?

BarbaraFromOopNorth · 14/11/2019 00:05

They can do whatever they want. Woman of colour and all that.

Grandmi · 14/11/2019 00:09

It’s hard to know really. A friend of mine who is very high up in the pecking order at Windsor/ frogmore house and is very professional in her job is very dismissive of the accusations towards Harry and Meghan!!! I think it’s fair to say that the household at Windsor do not relate to the crap that is written about H and M

Toomuchtrouble4me · 14/11/2019 00:09

I would SO give up my xmas to be a fly on the wall at Sandringham...

BertrandRussell · 14/11/2019 00:11

“ I guess the statement during the Africa tour was entirely in keeping with what we expect from senior royals?”
Well both William and Charles have done very similar. Diana publicly moves the press away from her children in Klosters.
Didn’t know about endorsing the letter from MPs- what did she say?

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 14/11/2019 00:30

Grandmi if she said anything else, she wouldn't be very professional at her job. Which isn't to say that she's lying - I just mean it's entirely the response you'd expect. Just as the media covering the Sandringham story (on the back of the Balmoral story) are doing exactly what you'd expect too.
