To ask what weird things you do

This has probably been asked before but I've not been around that long, so don't shoot me! I'm out on a dog walk and unintentionally I kicked a conker along the path with my left foot. I then spent the next few minutes looking for another conker to kick with my right foot so it "didn't feel left out"!?!? Please tell me I'm not the only weird one out here, what utterly random shit do you do? Please........Grin

So I'll just sit here being weird by myself, it's ok!! Confused

Mamalicious16 · 22/10/2019 12:30

I just saw a lone blackbird - I prefer to see them.in twos otherwise it's bad luck!

Ivysaurus · 22/10/2019 12:33

I work on a till in a shop, when I tell the customer the amount and wait for them to enter their PIN I draw the number out with my hand on the till drawer with my finger as if I'm writing it, no idea why! I'm sure no one notices

merryhouse · 22/10/2019 12:49

oh yeah, the symmetry thing, that's really common.

Do you have to alternate which foot steps down from the pavement? Or if you bang your elbow, feel uncomfortable if you don't at least gently bump the other one? Add an awkward skippy half-stride if you're on a flight of two-step stairs?

(I think it's part of an ASD thing, but I have never been formally diagnosed)

One of the first things I learned when I Got The Internet, way back last century:

It's Never Just You.

Whether it's obsessive symmetry, time-space synaesthesia, vaginismus, writing Chalet School fanfic, learning Geordie through reading Catherine Cookson, having odd predictive dreams or twisting oneself in knots attempting to reconcile them theologically...

somewhere out there, someone else will say "oh thank god, I thought it was just me"

It's never just you.

BlueNeighbourhood · 22/10/2019 14:16

I salute every magpie, especially if it's a solitary one as apparently it's bad luck otherwise.

People always said that walking on three of those drainage things is bad luck - I think the opposite and have to walk on all three of them.

I always have number 14 for everything, it was my ex DP's birthday, and has been my favourite number for as long as I can remember.

I am sure there are tonnes more, I'm quite OCD about lucky things.

EssentialHummus · 22/10/2019 14:23

I do sums with digital clocks - so if I see 13:46 I think "1 = 3+4 - 6". Been doing it since childhood. I used to do similar with licence plates but the UK system works against me!

There was a similar thread earlier this year that you may enjoy..

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 22/10/2019 14:32

I "fold" up my earlobe and stuff it in my earhole when I am reading or similar. It feels all squishy and nice.

ChristineBaskets · 22/10/2019 14:41

I can't stand being near my washing machine when it's on the spin cycle. It seems to be working so hard, spinning away just for me, and I feel guilty and sorry for it. Bonkers.

TheCanyon · 22/10/2019 14:45

I chat to myself when I'm home alone. Also need to listen to loud rock music to help me concentrate when doing uni work.

I have four dc, the silence clearly breaks me.

Jjou · 22/10/2019 16:25

Urgh, so much stuff. Recently I've taken to pretending I'm a painter and interviewing myself for art magazines, or pretending to be a musician and being on a chat show. I'm worried I'll get so carried away I won't hear an approaching family member and they'll realise how truly insane I am.

CatsOnCatnip · 22/10/2019 16:27

@Jjou I do that all the time! And when I’m cooking I pretend I’m a guest chef on Sunday brunch 😂

ShartGoblin · 22/10/2019 16:28

My DP once tried to get rid of all the soup spoons because nobody ever used them. I spent months finding any excuse to use them so they didn't feel bad...

TheQueef · 22/10/2019 16:29

I tweeze leg hairs.

Whatsyournameagain · 22/10/2019 16:32

I always say thank you to the oven, washing machine etc when they’ve finished, and give them a little pat of appreciation. I always have to make sure when I’m using plates that I use them all equally so the ones at the bottom of the pile don’t feel left out. DH thinks that’s a bit odd!

PennyNotSoWise · 22/10/2019 16:34

When I turn a light switch off, I have to tap the white square plastic part with all of my fingers afterwards Confused It feels weird if I don't.

And a really bad one-I pull the skin off my lips, sometimes with my teeth, mostly with my fingers. Usually when I'm really anxious. It shouldn't, but it just feels really satisfying. Blush

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 22/10/2019 16:34

I'm quite OCD about lucky things

No you're not. You can have OCD but in my experience people who say "I'm a bit OCD about XYZ" don't have it.

Janaih · 22/10/2019 16:34

I say hello to the bottles of vodka in the supermarket because I feel bad for them getting left behind by the gin craze.

CurlsandCurves · 22/10/2019 16:41

When I’m cleaning, cooking or doing anything ‘housey ‘ I pretend to be one of those home/cleaning Instagrammers who do loads of stories about how they keep their house immaculate. I do a whole narrative in my head, telling all my followers what I’m doing.

It actually really helps getting boring jobs done, because it makes it loads more fun.

SuzieBishop · 22/10/2019 16:51

If I hear/see a sentence I have to group the letters into 2’s and hope to come to an even number. If it doesn’t and it’s odd, I have to add another letter in somewhere to make it even up.

BallacheForLife · 22/10/2019 16:56

I spend many an hour (when I'm doing boring house stuff) creating whole other lives with wild scenarios in my head and I add to them regularly.
I don't hate my life or anything, it's just really fun and it's all in my head so no harm done.

TricklBOO · 22/10/2019 16:58

I have to add up the numbers on American houses in tv / films, the ID numbers of buses & trains etc.

confusedandemployed · 22/10/2019 17:00

I definitely get the symmetry thing.

@Janaih don't worry, I make sure those poor vodka bottles get plenty of attention Grin

Suomynona · 22/10/2019 17:11

All my life I have constantly repeated what others have said, or I have read etc, backwards in my head, it's always been second nature. I can do it freakily lightning fast too - I used to think everyone could do this until I told my parents. I very ocasionally do it out loud as a party piece but generally it makes me feel embarassed. I've googled and there are others with the same 'ability' who have gone on talk shows etc to demonstrate it.

Namechange8471 · 22/10/2019 17:17

Where to start!

I suffer from maladaptive daydreaming , I prance around my living room listening to music and imagining myself in various scenarios.
