I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

Its just plants: they have limited flavour.

Yes, all those herbs and spices taste of nothing.

Butchyrestingface · 30/09/2019 22:10

And vegan food has way less flavour than meat based or vegetarian food.

I had some seitan burgers last week for the first time. They were bland as hell.

Still have the jack fruit to attempt but I’m not hopeful. Confused

JinglingHellsBells · 30/09/2019 22:10

@Cam77 vegans also do not like acknowledging that when cereals and crops are harvested, millions of small animals- mice, rats, stoats, etc are killed by the vehicles. Hedgerows are destroyed to make large 'easy to plough and harvest' fields and this kills the biodiversity- birds, bees, flowers, butterflies- all essential for the food chain and pollination. There is also evidence that plants feel pain just as animals do.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/09/2019 22:10

Honestly enough people have raved about my cakes over the years, I know they're good. I've also had complete bloody disasters which I wouldn't even give to my ex husband!

DH & DD are on a a fake meat kick.
Not a bite of it is remotely like real meat. Not the same texture, taste or iron content.

I never met a decent fake cheese, either.
Fake milk is ok on its own, as something to have with muesli/cereal, even in hot drinks, but it's still not much like true milk. Why is fake milk always low fat? That annoys me a lot.

There is a decent fake cream product, though.

I dunno about fake egg products; I gather that some fake egg products work reasonably well in cakes or pancakes.

Is there such a thing as fake fish? I wonder why not.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 22:11

*PurpleDaisiesi you cannot get the same depth of flavour with plant based food. You can’t really argue with that I’m afraid. I was vegan for 5 years and eating cheese again was like an orgasm.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 30/09/2019 22:11

Yes, all those herbs and spices taste of nothing.

Yes but my point is that foods containing animal products are even more flavoursome - vegan food is pretty bland in comparison. And even more so if you aren't shipping in tonnes of different vegan foods from all over the planet.

eurochick · 30/09/2019 22:12

As someone who is lactose intolerant, I'm all for it. Rather than having to scrutinise the allergens list I just look for the sign shouting "vegan" to find something I can eat.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 30/09/2019 22:12

Cheers, @Wiltshirelass2019.

Though I will admit that a cafe near me does amazing vegan cake. God knows what's in it, but it's wonderful.

I don't mind vegan food if it tastes good. I just hate being preached at by ignoramuses.

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2019 22:12

Taste is pretty subjective. It’s interesting that you can tell exactly what I like to eat. Hmm

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 30/09/2019 22:13

Yanbu.

Every vegan I’ve ever met has always been really weird,

SwizzelStick · 30/09/2019 22:13

Not vegan but I often find myself enjoying the sides, you know. All those supposedly flavourless vegetables that have been cooked in those "flavourless herbs" with a dish as much or often more than the meat based main.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 22:14

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman Yes I eat mostly vegan and I do I love veggie food generally but I loathe veganism, it’s a community full of self obsessed people unfortunately.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/09/2019 22:14

@JinglingHellsBells being vegan is about doing the best you can, and accepting none of us can be 100% cruelty free. But does knowing you can't be completely cruelty free mean you shouldn't even try? I know because of my de idiom to be vegan less animals have died, that's good enough for me.

Maybe we don't like acknowledging it because we've heard it a million times before.

AutumnRose1 · 30/09/2019 22:14

Lljkk

There's stuff labelled as vegan fish, for sure.

midnightmisssuki · 30/09/2019 22:14

I have a friend who ‘tries to be vegan’ every other month. It’s annoying and rude to those who actually take it seriously. So bloody irritating!

SherbetSaucer · 30/09/2019 22:14

But I will be glad when this whole 'veganism' obsession is over

It’s unlikely to ever be over as it’s so closely linked with the climate crisis. Also more people than ever are waking up to the realities of how cruel the animal industries are (including free-range, grass fed, organic etc) and they don’t want to contribute to it. I think it will settle down as it becomes more mainstream though!

SwizzelStick · 30/09/2019 22:15

Yes, fake fish exists.

Butchyrestingface · 30/09/2019 22:15

Grin

Do you think it’s all the tofu that fries their synapses?

mindproject · 30/09/2019 22:15

I'm one of those vegan hypocrites/fake vegans. I don't eat any animal products but I still have leather shoes and leather bags and some non-vegan beauty products because I bought lots of these things before I became vegan and it would be far more wasteful to throw them all .

away now than to use them. I can't afford to buy many new things now.

On the plus side I don't buy fake vegan cheese because it's disgusting, and only a tiny amount of vegan meat. I mostly just eat veg, grains, tofu, beans, nuts etc. I highly recommend it. I don't comment on what other people eat though, I can't really say anything whilst wearing leather shoes.

AutumnRose1 · 30/09/2019 22:15

"it’s a community full of self obsessed people unfortunately."

Like many things, it's not a community.

I think some of these communities are just groups of wankers 😂

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2019 22:16

I don’t think it’s rude or annoying, unless she’s calling herself vegan and eating meat/dairy/eggs. That makes it harder for genuine vegans.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 30/09/2019 22:17

being vegan is about doing the best you can, and accepting none of us can be 100% cruelty free. hahaha I’ve been waiting for this line - it’s such a cop out! The truth is that millions of animals get killed for ‘vegan’ food too. Your choices as a vegan are not morally better than a meat eater or vegetarian.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/09/2019 22:18

I'll be the first to admit there are a lot of vegan wankers out there, and unfortunately they seem to be the loudest.

But a lot of us just want to get on doing our thing quietly.

There are a lot of meat eating wankers too! Every walk of life has them!
