I suppose AIBU to put this here...but it IS the busiest area. I just thought...I'd see if there were any other MNrs in Oz who'd like a little chat thread together?

Hope all is well, MaitlandGirl,

MaitlandGirl · 10/11/2019 12:33

All family has been located, everyone is safe but there’s been a lot of damage to property.

We’ve now got a catastrophic fire warning for Tuesday and as the edge of the bush is right outside our door we’re getting the house prepped tomorrow just in case.

The RFS (4 doors down) has already got the bulldozers and water tankers out and will be coming up to fill our tank tomorrow (we are the reserve water supply for the area).

Stay safe everyone and if in doubt - LEAVE.

StartupRepair · 10/11/2019 19:41

It is terrifying: just trying to get my head around the scale of the loss and damage. Hope Tuesday is better than predicted.

ajandjjmum · 11/11/2019 10:29

It must be so frightening to be near the affected areas - DH has family who live close to the bush, schools closed etc. Hope they're ok.

DS assures me that he'll be fine in Bondi!

ispepsiokay · 11/11/2019 11:40

Stay safe all of us in the catastrophic zones - get your fire plans ready and be prepared to leave x

MaitlandGirl · 11/11/2019 12:29

We’re heading to Bunnings for the day - we can take the dogs and rabbits (were claiming they’re odd liking dogs), there’s aircon, a cafe and toilets. Plus it’s opposite a Hungry Jacks.

I’ve no intention of hanging around, theres no way I’d be able to even begin defending the house so I’m off at first light.

Please everyone - if in doubt LEAVE. It’s just not worth staying.

ajandjjmum · 11/11/2019 12:39

So right Maitland - nothing is as precious as you and your family - and of course, everyone else who could be affected.

Thinking of all of you Aussies.

StartupRepair · 11/11/2019 19:30

Good plan Maitland. Don't forget your phone charger.

echt · 12/11/2019 06:42

I bet you're sorry it's not the weekend, Maitland then you could get the sausage sizzle at Bunnings: o

Pass the time reading these very funny reviews of the one at Warnambool:

www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowUserReviews-g255363-d12509193-r538930670-Bunnings_Restaurant-Warrnambool_Victoria.html

MaitlandGirl · 12/11/2019 07:04

I love the sausage sizzle - and I’m a rebel and get my onions put on the top!!

It’s been a weird day, almost like waiting for to go into labour, you know it’s going to happen but you’ve no idea when or how bad it’ll be.

We’ve been so incredibly lucky so far, but we’re back home now and have another 5 hours of prime fire weather to go, and only a couple of hours of daylight left.

Hope everyone else is ok and faired as well as we did.

echt · 12/11/2019 08:39

OMG it's hailing here in Melbourne.

My (young) dog, who has never experienced hailstones heard it coming down on the tin roof and saw it through the screen door, rushed out to check the newness and then cacked himself when it came hammering down and galloped back in. :o

echt · 14/11/2019 08:16

There's a thread on Living Overseas started by MNers near the bushfires:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/living_overseas/3741072-Sydney-Bushfires-catastrophic-alert

My own late spring misery is being thoroughly bitten by mozzies when watering the garden this evening.Angry

echt · 21/11/2019 06:26

How are we all in the places with the heat, the wind?

I was out on the playground at work when the temperature dropped 20 degrees in 30 minutes. Amazing. I'm so glad I didn't wash my car on the weekend, as it now looks very Desert Stormy.

StartupRepair · 21/11/2019 10:01

Melbourne was insane today, wasn't it?

BigFatGoalie · 21/11/2019 10:33

THREE WEEKS until we move to Perth from London. I cannot bloody wait!!!!!
Container arrives tomorrow and we pack everything in, living in chaos until then. We’re going to be NOR in Perth, starting a whole new life with two young DDs.
I have loved England, have been here for 12 years (moved from South Africa) but the weather is now getting me down. I need to be back in the sunshine! Any Perth Mumsnetters who want to be my friend are welcome Grin

bluetongue · 21/11/2019 10:38

Welcome to Australia BigFatGoalie. I hate the weather here but realise I’m probably in the minority.

You’ve certainly had some big moves. Here I am being scared to make the move from Adelaide to Tasmania Grin

bluetongue · 21/11/2019 10:40

Echt the weather changes have been crazy. I had to take a day off work today as the heat, wind and extreme changes in temperature triggered a migraine Sad

echt · 22/11/2019 08:29

I hope you're well now, bluetongue

Hard to believe how cold it is and how hot and fly-ridden it was 24 hours earlier.. And it is. Like someone left the door open on Antarctica.💨

latedecember1963 · 22/11/2019 10:34

Hello, from the UK.
A while back some of you were kind enough to help me with restaurant recomendations for Adelaide.
I have been keeping you all in mind since seeing the news coverage of the bush fires.
The footage of Lewis the Koala was gut wrenching and of course he was luckier than so many animals and humans who have lost their lives or their homes.
I hope you all continue to stay safe. Sending you all an unmumsnetty hug!

TheSandgroper · 22/11/2019 10:57

@BigFatGoalie. You say NOR. Do you have a place organised? You’re welcome to message for info.

BigFatGoalie · 22/11/2019 15:13

Thanks sandgroper
DH has a job in Joondalup, but we are looking to live anywhere north of Scarborough. AirBnB organised for the first month! Containers arrived and we packed them this morning. House is now a shell. Feeling very real now! Thanks for the message, may take you up on your offer and message you if I panic when we land! Grin Confused

TheSandgroper · 22/11/2019 22:30

Joondalup is just around the lake from me so very handy.

Aebj · 22/11/2019 23:15

SOR Perth , Rockingham kind of area and love it over here. Those with little kids @BigFatGoalie ? Have you looked at Ngala for playgroups in your area ?
Love the beaches and laid back way of life.
Been here for just over 10 years and only been back to the UK once. We don’t miss it. Didn’t like Bali . With such different parts of Oz I much prefer here. Esperance is beautiful, we’ve driven across the Nullarbor, Gold Coast was fun.
We came over on PR’s and are now citizens. We came with dh job. The boys were 3 & 5. Best thing we ever did. The school system works well for us and the boys are doing well in public schools here.
I’m not a fan of magpie season and glad that’s almost over and I’ve just put my name down to do a snake handling course at work 😮!!! I even did my surf bronze here some years back.! I had made it to 40 without ever been on a surf board , so I thought I better change that😂😂😂
I like hot Christmas days . We just chill for the day, have breakfast at the beach and cold lunch if it’s going to be over 35*

Whyareyouallcallingmemum · 23/11/2019 00:38

Hi. We've been here since 2011. Moved from Italy and UK before that. I'm Australian. Ex husband has PR. Kids have citizenship. We're in the new England. Fires all around us but not where we are yet. Really really smoky though and hot and dusty. No grass anywhere.

TheSandgroper · 14/12/2019 00:03

@BigFatGoalie how is it all going for you?
