to think Little Britain wouldn't be allowed today

Just came across some old Little Britain clips on Youtube. I'm really shocked! The amount of racism, disablist and sexist stuff. It was only back in 2007 I think that the filming ended so it wasn't that long ago at all! There is no way this would be allowed on tv now, surely?!

Come fly with me is worse (but still makes me chuckleBlush)

ShirleyPhallus · 17/09/2019 20:04

Quite honestly it was never funny. People that quote it are always a type

Windydaysuponus · 17/09/2019 20:06

Keeping a baby in a drawer at work was funny though...

Lockheart · 17/09/2019 20:08

Little Britain was late 90s / early 00s wasnt it? Not 2007.

Like lots of things it's aged. Some bits are funny, some not.

I don't think you'd get away with lots of comedies from the 90s / 00s now.

hellinabreadbasket · 17/09/2019 20:09

There are quite a few things that I don’t think would be on tv now from not that long ago... The Office springs to mind

HumphreyCobblers · 17/09/2019 20:09

I was repulsed by it when it first came out. Definitely wasn't the only one either.

100PercentThatBitch · 17/09/2019 20:10

Considering it's not even that old it has dated

I think Matt Lucas himself has said there's stuff in Little Britain he now regrets

Passthecherrycoke · 17/09/2019 20:10

Isn’t that the britas empire windydays?

I often think the same about LB. 2007 must’ve been the very end of acceptance of that sort of thing

picklemepopcorn · 17/09/2019 20:10

Windyday, that was Brittas Empire- it was good, and probably mainly still acceptable.

Little Britain was horrible then and still is now.

picklemepopcorn · 17/09/2019 20:11

Although there was some prescient stuff in there.

picklemepopcorn · 17/09/2019 20:12

And they were evenhandedly offensive, I suppose...

MrsElizabethShelby · 17/09/2019 20:12

I LOVE little Britain and I am not racist, or sexist or disablist. I don't care if that makes me a 'type' Hmm fwiw I'm early 30's

Answerthequestion · 17/09/2019 20:12

I watched it again recently and it really wouldn’t be allowed now but it really makes me laugh

svenwhen · 17/09/2019 20:12

Wonder what we're doing /saying/watching /laughing at nowadays that will be deemed unacceptable in the future...

BirthdayCakes · 17/09/2019 20:13

Little Britain was awful then and awful now..

Weirdly the IT Crowd seems quite dated now - but still very funny..

PinkiOcelot · 17/09/2019 20:13

LB wasn’t my cup of tea back in the day. Not for the “racism”, “disablism” etc, just not my sense of humour

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 17/09/2019 20:15

Come fly with me was very funny.
LB was a bit hit & miss.

Tellmetruth4 · 17/09/2019 20:17

Come Fly with Me had zero funny sketches. They were trying so hard to be un-PC that they forgot to include any actual jokes.

For some reason I blame David Williams for it being shit more than Matt Lucas. I can’t even stand his kids books. My DD brought the Worlds Worst Children and the only Asian character was called Chris Wong who was never wrong and of course he had to be a maths genius weirdo.

BabloHoney · 17/09/2019 20:18

Comedy dates so quickly, even really mainstream comedy. I’m not sure some of The Office would be allowed now either.

Purplequalitystreet · 17/09/2019 20:18

I could be wrong but wasn't the whole point of Little Britain to point out the racism etc in our society, rather than promoting it? Still makes uncomfortable viewing though

AppropriateAdult · 17/09/2019 20:21

I’m interested, what bits of The Office would seem unacceptable now?

userlotsanumbers · 17/09/2019 20:22

Nah, I never rated LB - watched it once and never again. Thought they were twats, still do. I think they got away with it by the 'Alf Garnett' principle - ooh, we're laughing at him, not with him - but somehow, it never rang true.
And I don't let the kids read his books either.

RosesAndRaindrops · 17/09/2019 20:23

Keeping a baby in a drawer at work was funny though...

That was Brittas Empire, loved that! (Unless Little Britain did it too?)
Never found Little Britain funny in the slightest.

31RueCambon75001 · 17/09/2019 20:24

I agree @Tobythecat I used to watch it occasionally and I thought the two ladies who couldn't stop weeing was 1) disgusting, and 2) ageist and sexist. I just didn't like it AT ALL

Dapplegrey · 17/09/2019 20:24

Wonder what we're doing /saying/watching /laughing at nowadays that will be deemed unacceptable in the future...

I wonder too. Characters smoking (unless villains) aren’t allowed anymore so maybe no one will be shown eating meat or drinking alcohol though that would rule out any meal time scenes in period films.
