to think Little Britain wouldn't be allowed today

Just came across some old Little Britain clips on Youtube. I'm really shocked! The amount of racism, disablist and sexist stuff. It was only back in 2007 I think that the filming ended so it wasn't that long ago at all! There is no way this would be allowed on tv now, surely?!

Nighty Night is incredible!

Agree that The Office has aged well and Father Ted appears to be timeless. It's in a class of its own I think. I like the Alan Partridge one in the Travelodge too - some of the other series are a bit hit and miss but that one is great.

Itstheprinciple · 19/09/2019 06:23

Little Britain is funny. Come Fly with Me is also funny. We have rewatched all of them recently. There are definitely moments where we wondered how they got away with that but I think that is part of humour. It should be slightly edgy. I really think we're in danger of losing our sense of humour because someone might be offended.

edgeofheaven · 19/09/2019 06:37

I actually think the "Bitty" sketches contribute to the UK's weirdness about breastfeeding.

VeryLittleOwl · 19/09/2019 06:51

Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister for me. Nigel Hawthorne and Paul Eddington were just perfect together.

Also loved The Good Life, Ever-Decreasing Circles (my parents secretly used to refer to our next-door neighbours as Howard and Hilda, which they totally were) and Executive Stress from that era.

Little Britain wasn't very funny though was it?

Dongdingdong · 19/09/2019 08:21

I'd agree with this. The simple fact of men dressing up as women to take the piss and caricature puts it into the misogynist box for me

I can’t believe there are people who take this stuff so seriously. Honestly, lighten up!

HelenaDove · 19/09/2019 20:19

The Bitty sketches made me feel ill.

HelenaDove · 21/09/2019 02:47

Does anyone else remember The Piglet Files Not seen that for YEARS.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/09/2019 03:14

I just admit I loved the sketches with Sebastian and the Prime Minister.

Jesaminecollins · 21/09/2019 05:48

I loved Father Ted

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/09/2019 06:08

DP and I watched men behaving badly the other night which I remember finding completely hilarious as a teenager. It was shit.

Jesaminecollins · 21/09/2019 06:12

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie

It still makes me laugh and I am in my 50s

Huggybear16 · 21/09/2019 06:23

@Oysterbabe

Mrs Brown's Boys was voted the best sitcom of the 21st Century by the British public. Further proof, if it was needed, that the great British public shouldn't be allowed to vote for stuff.

Couldn't agree more.

pippitysqueakity · 21/09/2019 06:23

Not sure how Derry Girls came to be included in a list of comedies which has aged well. Second series was only aired this year! Love it btw.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/09/2019 10:37

The Goodies, anyone?

The image of Graeme Garden dressed as a "sexy wolf' in a ladies equivalent of a Bunny Club still makes me laugh when I think of it now.

TidyDancer · 21/09/2019 10:58

LB was always shit imo. More so because I just didn't get the humour than I was offended by it though.

Birds of a Feather is uncomfortable watching. Tracey always putting down Sharon when she was the hard worked and Sharon being portrayed as thick and lazy because she was fat. Awful.

Mrs Brown's Boys is utterly dreadful.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/09/2019 11:00

"I LOVE little Britain and I am not racist, or sexist or disablist. I don't care if that makes me a 'type' hmm fwiw I'm early 30's"

Same here, except I'm 10 years older than you.

emilybrontescorsett · 21/09/2019 11:04

As a child I was frightened when the Goodies did a sketch of a giant chicken laying eggs and and cat chasing it or something like that.
I loved Fawlty Towers and most Monty Python stuff.
Can’t for the life of me understand how anyone could find Allo Allo funny.

I did like most of LB when it came out. My dd loves the sketch where Walliams and Lucas are in dresses and one shouts to the other “Remember to sit down when you go for a piss.”

SerenDippitty · 21/09/2019 11:17

The Goodies, anyone?

I loved the Goodies but can think of some episodes that would not bear repeating today. I loved that zip up suit that Graeme had, a one piece that he just stepped into, zipped up and it looked like a suit and tie. Brilliant time saving invention.

TonTonMacoute · 21/09/2019 11:26

LB was Okay, I used to quite enjoy it as I remember. I certainly don't think you could make it today

I have been watching a lot of old comedy with DS (he's 20). Favourites are

The Thick of It - Brilliant, not sure you could make that today

Green Wing - quite a lot of our in jokes based on this incredible programme, not sure you could make that today either

Phoenix Nights - brilliant, Peter Kay is a genius. Could you make that today? Not sure.

Bellamy's People - so clever it's almost not funny, how I miss Felix Dexter.

When he was younger he loved the Goodies, and I was surprised that I still found it really funny too, especially the one where they make a film. I would love to the one with the Fifties Rock n roll revival, at the time it was the funniest thing I had ever seen.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/09/2019 11:31

"Vicky Pollard & Fat Fighters were both hilarious & well observed !"

Yes, and Fat Fighters is just an update of the unemployment class one done by League of Gentlemen.

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 21/09/2019 11:40

Nothing beats dinnerladies or Early Doors for me.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/09/2019 14:27

Mrs Brown's Boys is utterly dreadful

It is complete and utter SHITE!

I loved that zip up suit that Graeme had, a one piece that he just stepped into, zipped up and it looked like a suit and tie.

I remember that too - the tie was the top of the zip and it was an all-in-one jacket, shirt tie and trousers.

Cheeserton · 21/09/2019 14:32

It's fair enough to dislike it, comedy always divides people. I tend to find that people who are immediately snobbish and judgemental about those who like it are 'a type' though. (the irony...)

ZootSuit · 21/09/2019 23:39

Little Britain was never funny for me, but I’m surprised no one has mentioned Rock Profiles, also with Matt Lucas and David Walliams just before they started LB. The characterisation and they way they pick up the details of the celebs they were impersonating is brilliant.
Tom Jones vs Shirley Bassey is still one of my favourite things Smile
