to think Little Britain wouldn't be allowed today

Just came across some old Little Britain clips on Youtube. I'm really shocked! The amount of racism, disablist and sexist stuff. It was only back in 2007 I think that the filming ended so it wasn't that long ago at all! There is no way this would be allowed on tv now, surely?!

Forgot to say LB was also shit and to be honest I never did believe the whole ‘we’re laughing at them’ defence with them. I wouldn’t have minded so much if it was actually funny but it wasn’t although each to their own...

However, The Office, Spitting Image, Mighty Boosh, Phoenix Nights and Bottom we’re works of art. They went over the line loads but were (IMO) super funny and you could tell it wasn’t aimed at simply being un-PC for the sake of it.

Tellmetruth4 · 17/09/2019 20:51

You can almost imagine Walliams saying ‘bum’ and ‘poo’ and falling about laughing like a three year old.

titnomatani · 17/09/2019 20:51

Exactly @kitk- as an Asian, I was all too familiar with the kind of people they showed on LB/CFWM and couldn't help but giggle. Same with goodness gracious me- bloody hilarious!

ThePawtriarchy · 17/09/2019 20:51

The Raj character in David Walliam’s books and the fact he narrates it for the audio versions is questionable.

Xmasbaby11 · 17/09/2019 20:52

Yanbu. I used to love it but it wouldn't be aired now. Matt Lucas in an interview said it is dated and belonged in the past. A lot of comedy dates badly.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 17/09/2019 20:52

Both Matt Lucus and David Walliums have said in interviews they could never make LB today.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/09/2019 20:52

It was funny, I'm not a 'type' I'm just not a fucking flannel and can enjoy comedy without getting offended at every damn thing
OP you're right, it would never be allowed on tv now cause the world has gone mad!

This is exactly what I mean. This exact language fits right in with those who use the terms “snowflake”, “PC gone mad!” And “i just tell it like it is”.

BackToTheOIdHouse · 17/09/2019 20:52

I thought the whole point of Little Britain was to ridicule the ridiculers? To point out the stereotypes and mock those those subscribed to them

I remember that's what Lucas & Walliams said at the time, and what I came here to say pretty much. Even at the time though I thought it backfired and was just plain grim.

League of Gentlemen hasn't aged too well either has it - Papa Lazarou in blackface, Barbara, Herr Lipp etc. However I did think that was brilliant at the time.

Bottom was hilarious, we still watch it regularly in our house. Rik Mayall was a beautiful genius.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 20:55

Keeping a baby in a drawer at work was funny though...

That was "The Brits Empire" - and it was hilarious!

Little Britain was over-rated bollox.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 20:56

*Brittas Empire - sorry!

MellowBird85 · 17/09/2019 20:57

Oh come on, it’s satire! Why has society become so sensitive over a bit of lighthearted piss taking?! It’s the same people who want to ban Apu from The Simpsons!

@TrueFriendsStabYouInTheFront - totally agree!

Windydaysuponus · 17/09/2019 20:59

Oops yeah!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 20:59

I don't know how Mrs Brown's Boys is currently on prime time TV. It's awful

It bloody is, too!

HelenaDove · 17/09/2019 21:00

Hated Little Britain.

DH loves the Brittas Empire. Forces TV is just finishing a rerun of Shelley. Hilarious and i didnt realise it was so political as i was a young child when it was first broadcast. I also didnt realize the writers from Drop the Dead Donkey also wrote quite a few episodes of Shelley. This stands up really well and some of the political aspects resonate with what is going on today.

Butteredtoast55 · 17/09/2019 21:01

LB always was horrible. I think maybe now people are just a bit more aware of how offensive it is.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/09/2019 21:01

I don’t know why they don’t do re runs of the brittas empire on a random channel. I tried to watch it on you tube and the quality so was bad I couldn’t watch it. I used to love it.

They do re runs of some 1970’s sitcoms that’s are very suspect.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 21:01

For some reason I blame David Williams for it being shit more than Matt Lucas. I can’t even stand his kids books.

David Walliams is creeeeepy.

I can't stand him - he makes my flesh crawl.

monkeytennis97 · 17/09/2019 21:01

As a mum of a learning disabled DS I always hated the character of Anne in LB. Didn't find it funny as a whole programme anyway. Can't stand Walliams anyway.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 21:03

SHELLEY! With Hywel Bennett? That was Brilliant!

I liked Brush Strokes, too - wonder how dated that would look now.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/09/2019 21:04

Oh yes, brush strokes. That was great.

Watching.....anyone remember that one.

Oysterbabe · 17/09/2019 21:05

Mrs Brown's Boys was voted the best sitcom of the 21st Century by the British public. Further proof, if it was needed, that the great British public shouldn't be allowed to vote for stuff.

BackToTheOIdHouse · 17/09/2019 21:06

I absolutely LOVED Brush Strokes!

DH and DD are huge fans of the Hi De Hi lot. They can happily watch whole box sets of HDH, You Rang M'Lord and Oh Doctor Breeching end to end. I think they're shit, however.

cushioncovers · 17/09/2019 21:06

Come fly with me is brilliant. Little Britain always made me cringe.

FurrySlipperBoots · 17/09/2019 21:07

It always made me really uncomfortable. The only sketches I liked were Vicky Pollard, and that got tired pretty quickly. Somehow The Office/Extras is more acceptable to me, because you're cringing at how awkward/inappropriate the characters are rather than laughing with them.

Doyoumind · 17/09/2019 21:07

Well, the great British public would also vote to bring back hanging and voted for Breixt to enough said!

Loved Brush Strokes.
