I have been on quite a few different forums/chat rooms in my time online, and tbh am getting slightly fed up with the constant barrage of insults that seem to be directed toward people who aren't professors in the English Language.

  1. There is nothing that says because someone spelt a word wrong they do not know what it meant.
  2. It is VERY rude to pick on people for maybe being less capable of you in this area, especially as some may have had learning difficulties or even dyslexia and
  3. Make your point??? If you don't agree with someone, surely you can just explain why?? Marking them up like it is some kind of test really doesn't help your argument.

oh, btw for those of you who are so pedantic, I made sure I spelt things right for you. I hope it is readable and understandable.

jeremyvile have a look at the thread on postal strikes it is not all tongue in cheek I wish it was!

cheap and nasty shots were thrown in there!

I run a website and chat forum for mums and I would never let any of my members be so rude its just not fair.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 08/08/2007 16:49

"if you havent got anything nice to say then dont say it at all"

I really, really disagree with this statement. Mumsnet would be utterly tedious if everyone thought like that.

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 16:49

the e-book suzy.

ps, Not being funny just wanted to say that some people have become down right rude about peoples grammar and "lack of intelligence"
x

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 16:50

kathy, I think we all the right to say what we think, even if it is totally against a different posters opinions and ideas, but surely it can still be said with respect?

OP posts:
g21inny · 08/08/2007 16:52

I dont think its fair to say "if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all"
but I do think its fair to say dont be rude about a persons grammar or spelling.

Aitch · 08/08/2007 16:54

god, this is such a yawn. but it's okay to spew forth completely moronic views and refuse to take on board any new information while you are insulting people's husbands, though?

how boring your chat forum must be, ginny, if you are the arbiter of good manners and behaviour. on MN we let people sort it out for themselves, like adults do. if someone says something wrong/stupid they should be pulled up. if they spell it wrong, who really cares?

Aaarrgh! i cant - i will only lose several hours of my life swearing at the PC (peeped in early on, was )

I'll have to take your word for it!

MrsBadger · 08/08/2007 16:55

I just ignore posts that I find hard to read or understand, whether because of spelling, grammar, lack of punctuation, lack of paragraphs or lack of coherency.
I think it's poor form to pick up on these things as a cheap way to win points in an argument (except perhaps the coherency one).

However, I still prefer the minimal-moderation philosophy of MN to that of sites where users "are never allowed to be so rude" on the grounds that it's "not fair".

lillaura123 · 08/08/2007 16:57

i am a person who finds it hard to spell correctly but i know my grammer is awful , i have been subject recently to "well someone with your lack of good grammer, obviuosly lacks intellegence" this i found unfair

surely if you cant understand wot people have typed its the same as if you didnt hear clearly wot someone has said to you - cant we be polite and have a laugh and say thing like " dont understand that can you re-type?" instead of mickey taking

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 16:57

mrsbadger, I think what g21inny meant was that some of the blatant digs made towards lillaura were unacceptable and that as moderator of her own forum the users would have been spoken to, which surely should be available on all sites hance the 'report ! ' on here.

OP posts:
Desiderata · 08/08/2007 16:59

Well, g21inny, (for instance), you have not punctuated your last post. You might not think it's important, but I do.

I'm not being rude, of course. I'm just pointing it out ..

Aitch · 08/08/2007 16:59

are we starting up the postal thread again? oh goody!

JeremyVile · 08/08/2007 17:00

Please no - it looked grim.

MrsBadger · 08/08/2007 17:00

So, (not having read the thread in question myself), did anyone click the red exclamation mark to report the offensive post to MNHQ?
And if so, did they delete it on the grounds that it was 'a personal attack?'

g21inny · 08/08/2007 17:00

Aitch, I wish it was boring but we all get on really well we have good banter but dont pick up on things like spelling mistakes and grammar.

We dont all agree on things we put our views across but take eachothers opinions I think its something to do with living in a democratic society.

lillaura123 · 08/08/2007 17:00

yeah without the actual convo about postal strikes just the bit that over took it

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 17:00

Aitch, the only relevance the postie thing has to do with this is that on there some people were marked up on grammar, stop being so bitter and just stick to the thread.

OP posts:
Lorayn · 08/08/2007 17:01

I think some of them were mrsbadger, and a message or two was removed.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 08/08/2007 17:01

sorry, lillaura, did you mean they deleted the offensive post?
or the whole thread?
or just the posts after the thred degenerated into a slanging match?

lurkylou · 08/08/2007 17:02

Did you spot the 2nd mistake Suzy??

.......for maybe being less capable of you in this area,........

Should be .....for maybe being less capable THAN you in this area,......

Lorayn may I have the paperback version as I travel a lot??

Aitch · 08/08/2007 17:03

hah! to living in a democratic society. what's having a vote got to do with respecting other people's idiotic viewpoints? that's why you have a vote, so that they don't get heard, to be honest. if the postal thread had been run democratically then lillaura would have been the one being shut down.

lillaura123 · 08/08/2007 17:04

single posts were removed as personal attacked i would have done the same at comments made at me if i knew how - obviously not clever enough to work that one out ey ?

g21inny · 08/08/2007 17:04

yes mrs badger I did press the red explanation mark and it was deleted but I think that shows that it should not have been said.

Desiderata I cannot punctuate everyhting I write whilst running around getting on and off the computer to see to my newborn twins and my 18 month old lil boy and 5 yr old.
Plus I am dyslexic but as I was told in the postal thread that makes me too thick to be on here is that fair??
