I have been on quite a few different forums/chat rooms in my time online, and tbh am getting slightly fed up with the constant barrage of insults that seem to be directed toward people who aren't professors in the English Language.

  1. There is nothing that says because someone spelt a word wrong they do not know what it meant.
  2. It is VERY rude to pick on people for maybe being less capable of you in this area, especially as some may have had learning difficulties or even dyslexia and
  3. Make your point??? If you don't agree with someone, surely you can just explain why?? Marking them up like it is some kind of test really doesn't help your argument.

oh, btw for those of you who are so pedantic, I made sure I spelt things right for you. I hope it is readable and understandable.

Yes please Bluestocking. My dp bought me 'The Dawkins Delusion' so that I could argue against his (dp's) pro-Dawkins stance.

Habbibu · 09/08/2007 09:52

Hunker - don't know if you've seen this, but thought you might appreciate the statistical analysis. Many thanks for hug. Will be back when full body cast is off...

aloha · 09/08/2007 09:54

I don't know. If someone is claiming to a lecturer in criminal law and posting rubbish about rape, I do think it is worth pointing out that they can't spell burgled, or numberous other relevant words.

Leati · 09/08/2007 09:56

Thank You!!! I always chat in quick thoughts. Sometimes I start to write one thing and then change my mind. I do not spend a lot time checking my grammer and my grammer has been picked apart several times.

I can't believe that people with crap spelling and grammar wouldn't want to be corrected, it's called LEARNING.

Leati · 09/08/2007 09:58

I think that a lot of times people just don't spend the same amount of time writing a quick chat note as they would an academic paper. I also want to point out that I once had an attorney who brought my court docs in with half the words missing because she couldn't operate her computer. I hardly think this is a sign of intelligence or lack of intelligence.

Leati · 09/08/2007 10:05

CountessDracula,

Has it ever occured to you that the person you are correcting may already be aware of how to grammatically speak and write. When I write on chat boards I am just trying to get a point across. I skip words, I abbreviate words, and all sorts of other goofy stuff. When a person addresses another person's grammer instead of the issue being written about it can be frustrating.

When I am writing a paper it looks completely different.

CountessDracula · 09/08/2007 10:05

Surely if you get corrected and learn the right way to spell and punctuate then you will automatically apply the correct usage even when typing fast!

edam · 09/08/2007 10:10

I think a lawyer who doesn't know how to work a computer in order to produce hard copy with all the words in is pretty dim, really. If they are that ignorant, they should employ a secretary.
