I have been on quite a few different forums/chat rooms in my time online, and tbh am getting slightly fed up with the constant barrage of insults that seem to be directed toward people who aren't professors in the English Language.

  1. There is nothing that says because someone spelt a word wrong they do not know what it meant.
  2. It is VERY rude to pick on people for maybe being less capable of you in this area, especially as some may have had learning difficulties or even dyslexia and
  3. Make your point??? If you don't agree with someone, surely you can just explain why?? Marking them up like it is some kind of test really doesn't help your argument.

oh, btw for those of you who are so pedantic, I made sure I spelt things right for you. I hope it is readable and understandable.

If there have been loads of threads like this why do people on the forum still personally attack people?
Is it really fair?? and before you say life is not fair, no its not but we could all do little things to make things better for all of us!

All Lorayn wants to know is, is it unreasonalble to expect a bit of respect on chat forums and not to be personally attacked because their grammar is not up to other peoples standards.

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 19:01

This board is what it is, ginny. It's been like this for years. And FWIW, a lot of people hang around here because it is how it is.

Carp on and on about how rude, unfair, etc. it is, by all means. That's the beauty of it, it's a pretty free board.

But if it's not conforming to what your idea of a board should be like you've really got to wonder why you continue to spend time on it.

I mean, I've been on sites that just weren't for me. They didn't suit my ethos and I didn't have much in common with most of the posters.

So, there are many other boards which did suit me better, this being one of them.

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 19:03

Honestly, what is the point in coming onto a board and posting right away about how crap it is, though?

And then ask, 'Am I being unreasonable'? I mean, really, what sort of thing does that seek? A, 'Oh, yes, you're so right. We're in your gang of strangers in cyberspace. We're all going to do things just like you want! Respect!'?

Gobbledigook · 08/08/2007 19:07

The way I see it is this, I don't stop learning when I leave school, I'm learning all the time and if someone wants to correct my spelling, grammar whatever then that's ok, as long as they do it nicely. I'm glad if someone points out that I got something wrong, cos next time I can put it right.

g21inny · 08/08/2007 19:07

I dont have a problem with it Expat.
I can be as rude and bitchy as the next person I just personally think that slating someone for their spelling and grammar is a bit low.

How does the person on the other end of the computer know if the person writing is dyslexic or disabled etc??

Some people are not as good at English as others are, but for perfectly acceptable reasons.
do you not agree?

NadineBaggott · 08/08/2007 19:07

OOps sorry - that's not gobble its me!

g21inny · 08/08/2007 19:09

Gobbledigook thats the point on some of the threads it has not been corrected nicely it has been used against the person midway through a debate.
Lorayn is wanting people to correct others Grammar in a polite way I think thats fair!

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 19:51

expat, if you're so fucking bothered about the fact that these threads have come up before and are bored, don't post on it. It really is that simple. The whole point of this thread is to say that I find it unreasonable that people pick on grammar as a weapon, and so fucking what if it has been this way for years. It is an active and open forum, I was allowed to join and as so shall continue to post.
Plus as I am sure I have stated, I have posted in some topics that I thought were really spot on.
Lastly, why don't you read through the whole thread, I was not the only person that said it, and it is only you and your cronies (the ones that need to use grammar/spelling correction as a tool, maybe if you were more intelligent then you would be able to argue your point without corrections and/or regaling us with tales of the good ole days before us 'newbies' came along) that have been saying it is fine to be so rude, many people have agreed that in genuine way, corrections are acceptable, but as a fighting tool, it is the last shot for an old hag desperate not to have her 'place' on the forum questioned.
Get over yourself already, this is the internet, you are merely a bunch of words, and no better than anyone else.

NB - now i get it!!

You ARE gobbledigook!

JeremyVile · 08/08/2007 20:07

.....or are you?

bumperlicious · 08/08/2007 20:09

Can I just add as an aside to this, can people assume mitigating factors in postings? I consider myself to be pretty literate but not a great typer, and often typing posts with a baby hanging off my nork, hence lack of capitals and lack of correction of spellings/typos!

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:10

Now who's getting personal . . .

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 20:11

bumperlicious I have EXACTLY the same problem and am often typing blind with one hand!!

Desiderata · 08/08/2007 20:11

Lorayn .. this may be the internet, but it's a community. Some of us are friends. We are real people, warts and all. I don't know who you are (and you're right, it's an active and open forum), so I don't shoot down newbies because no one shot me down when I was one a mere three months ago.

But you've got an attitude. And right now, it's not sitting too well with me.

Aitch · 08/08/2007 20:12

LOLOL at loralyn. no, you must never take the piss out of someone persistently mis-spelling somethign to hilarious effect while refusing to take on board any of the many salient points being made, but you simply must feel free to insult anyone who dared to post on this site before you turned up. ROFL.

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:12

BOYHW.

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:13

Des can dish it out! Trust me!

Quattrocento · 08/08/2007 20:14

Yes but schoolmarmish is the nature of this forum.

You want cuddles and huns and sweetness and light? Go to netmums.

Oh and you missed an apostrophe in the title.

Aitch · 08/08/2007 20:15

desi you were never a newbie. from your first day on here you were NEVER a newbie.

bumper that's the thing, i can't be arsed capitalising, so i don't. i often don't go back and correct typos because life's too short. but when people are being enormously pompous/aggressive/idiotic, it does rather break the tension to say...'you do know it's grammar, don't you? '

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 20:16

was that something Aitch??

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:16

But you know, for a weegie, Aitch does pretty well. She needs some slack, being a weegie and that .

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:17

Oh, gawd, the Irish have shown up .

Kewcumber · 08/08/2007 20:17

I am a grammar pedant and I actually agreed with some of what the OP says. I do think it slightly out of order to use poor grammar and spelling as a "weapon" against a poster you don't know and wehre it isn't relevant to the argument.

However I take great glee in correcting as much as possible of the posts of people I "know" pretty well.

On the whole as long as I can understand the post I'm happy. Poor punctuation, everything lower case, or upper case or no paragraphs at all is generally much harder to interpret than poor spelling and I general give up and wander off before the end...

Kewcumber · 08/08/2007 20:19

and on the upside Lorayn - as you have discovered, you can say "fucking" on this site without it being 'd.
