I have been on quite a few different forums/chat rooms in my time online, and tbh am getting slightly fed up with the constant barrage of insults that seem to be directed toward people who aren't professors in the English Language.

  1. There is nothing that says because someone spelt a word wrong they do not know what it meant.
  2. It is VERY rude to pick on people for maybe being less capable of you in this area, especially as some may have had learning difficulties or even dyslexia and
  3. Make your point??? If you don't agree with someone, surely you can just explain why?? Marking them up like it is some kind of test really doesn't help your argument.

oh, btw for those of you who are so pedantic, I made sure I spelt things right for you. I hope it is readable and understandable.

not with you, lorayn. what do you mean?

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:21

You can even write 'cunt'.

So long as it's not in the title.

Aitch · 08/08/2007 20:22

but i thought this was a mums' site for mums?

Aitch · 08/08/2007 20:23
expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:23

Show some respect, Aitch!

StarryStarryNight · 08/08/2007 20:24

I am not so bothered with other people's grammar and spelling. I am more concerned with the blatant lack of tact and respect shown by people who for no good reason decide to be rude and start name calling. That is something I personally don't forget, somebody's command of the English language when trying to spell and get a point across, is of lesser concern.

Lorayn · 08/08/2007 20:25

You, like the rest of us mortals made a typo my dear.
Tbh I don't really care if people think I have an attitude, It is the first thing I could say all the posters have in common!!
This post was not a dig at anyone in particular, and as I have said, I LIKE good grammar!! I too have on occasion corrected someone, especially with the 'grammer/grammar' thing.
I was merely saying that we shouldn't use someone's shortcomings against them.
If this is a community then it would be nice to welcome new members rather than be so rude.

lazyemma · 08/08/2007 20:25

It is very rude, yes, and is the sort of thing only very mean-minded people do - usually when they don't have anything of interest or value to add to the discussion.

Aitch · 08/08/2007 20:27

oh my god, starrystarrynight's got a list!

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:27

It's a bit hard to be 'welcoming' when someone comes on here and among the first things they do is scold everyone for how rude, bullying, name-calling and evil they are, though.

StarryStarryNight · 08/08/2007 20:27

No Aitch, there is actually only ONE who has ever been rude!

Quattrocento · 08/08/2007 20:29
Lorayn · 08/08/2007 20:33

as far as I see it, I have always made a reasoned response, one with which I felt had a place in the topic and was relevant to the conversation.
I'm not here to cause arguments, but I, like most of us here, am a free-thinking, and would like to think, quite intelligent woman who wants to get her point across, it would be much easier if people stuck to their point than picked on other things.
I for one would've been way more inclined to listen to, and probably agree with the posties being on strike (not trying to start it again, plz!!) but for the way it was being conducted.
It takes something away from your argument and lessens your view when you relinquish your well-argued point for a grammar class.

OP posts:
Aitch · 08/08/2007 20:33

what are you on about, lorayn? that i made a typo and didn't correct it, just as i said i don't do? because i think life's too short to correct typos or capitalise?

here's what i think, then.

if you're ill-mannered enough to go into an established community and start insulting the members either directly, as you just did, or indirectly, as lillaura did by refusing to listen to people who Knew More about the postal strike than she did, then hell mend you.

you're being rude, you're being a pain in the arse and people can take against you if they so wish, as you have clearly done so against us.

why don't you try this approach next time you walk into a party where you don't know anyone and see how far you get?

StarryStarryNight · 08/08/2007 20:33

Actually Aitch, to clarify, rude to me personally that is. And by rude I mean name calling and insinuations. lol

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:34

I always liked Starry Starry Night's name because I like the song .

Desiderata · 08/08/2007 20:35

You just need to reset your hypocrite button, Lorayn.

Now, for instance, you called expat an old hag. Now, we all know she is, of course, just like everyone knows that I'm a fuckwit. But I wouldn't expect a complete stranger to call me that, now would I?

StarryStarryNight · 08/08/2007 20:36

and I like Scotlan, expat!

MyTwopenceworth · 08/08/2007 20:36

Yes it is unreasonable to use someone's grammar and spelling to try to score a point in a row.

It's a cheap shot, adds nothing to the discussion (unless the discussion is about grammar and spelling!!) and is the equivalent of saying

"and another thing .... you smell"

to the kid in the playground who won't share his ball with you......

Did I mispell anything?
How was my grammar?

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:36

Des, you're so rude!

StarryStarryNight · 08/08/2007 20:36

and I cant spell, so shoot me now!

of course Scotland

Aitch · 08/08/2007 20:37

so it's a short list then, starry. phew.

loralyn. to be clear, the you of my post is directed at the many people who think that a great way to make friends and influence people on MN is to give them a lecture in How Things SHould Be.

and you really don't want to get the postal strike thing started again, nor do i. but there wasn't much intelligence on display with regards to the OP's argument, truthfully there wasn't. as i explained below. a simple 'shit, there is more to this than i realised' would have been better than her 'you're all so Old, so Rude and i'm going to have to go shopping on my son's 2nd birthday' approach.

expatinscotland · 08/08/2007 20:37

I'm definitely liking Norway!

MyTwopenceworth · 08/08/2007 20:38

Oopsie. You're fighting. 'Scuse me.
