To think Prince Charles will be our last Monarch

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 09:49

Given that it could be another thirty years before Prince Charles dies, I was wondering if he will be our last Monarch.

I think that a lot will have changed by the time Prince William is due to accede the throne and that the Monarchy will have been abolished by then.

I think we’ve become a bit fed up with the inequality of the whole thing. The whole things a little bit of a strange concept these days

beluga425 · 29/08/2019 09:51

Or we'll all have suffocated/fried and will have no need for a monarch.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 09:52

The Queen us our last monarch. No one will give a stuff for those who come after and I think we are all healthily sick if the monarchy

Userwhatevernumber · 29/08/2019 09:53

YANBU and I believe you may well be right

However, I do find myself quite saddened by that, as I quite like having a royal family and having a constitutional monarchy, and would not want a republic - but agree that they should have no power, just for show, like Monaco, Denmark, Sweden etc

herculepoirot2 · 29/08/2019 09:53

Nah. As long as Kate and whoever comes after her keeps popping out those adorable baby royals, there won’t be the will to disinherit them.

Elphame · 29/08/2019 09:54

Oh I do hope so - actually I hope it doesn't take that long

Userwhatevernumber · 29/08/2019 09:54

And yes I am aware that mine is a very unpopular opinion on Mumsnet (dons hard hat) but I am entitled to me opinion even so

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 09:55

@joystir59

I think he will be crowned.

But in thirty years time so much will have changed that I really doubt if Prince William will be.

I think yesterday's shitshow about suspending parliament dragging the Queen into the Brexit maelstrom means we'll have a shift in the role of monarchy. We'll still have a king/queen, but they'll no longer be 'head of state', just something for tourists etc. We clearly, urgently need a proper constitution, and a head of state with power to constrain the government when it goes 'rogue'.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 29/08/2019 09:55

Good. I shan't miss them. I quite like her grandchildren but her children, with the exception of Anne, seem to be terrible people.

KateWrong · 29/08/2019 09:55

YABU, only because I hope Elizabeth will be the last monarch!

sue51 · 29/08/2019 09:56

I live in hope.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 09:57

We clearly, urgently need a proper constitution, and a head of state with power to constrain the government when it goes 'rogue' err, no, that's the opposite of democracy, and that's what we had before when the monarch could arbitrarily order beheadings.

Snog · 29/08/2019 09:58

I don't think they have any place in modern society and find them to be a national embarrassment tbh

formerbabe · 29/08/2019 09:59

Hopefully.

A repulsive bunch

TheFaerieQueene · 29/08/2019 10:00

I think yesterday showed very clearly how pointless the monarchy is. What is the point of an HofS who can’t actually do anything beyond the ceremonial, but still expects the privilege and subservience?

RushianDisney · 29/08/2019 10:01

I hope so. Good riddance. In a country where working people are going to food banks regularly we don't need a load of toffs swanning about claiming that their minimal 'public service' means they are entitled to live a life of unrestricted luxury on the tax payers who can't afford to eat.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 10:04

They need to go. People are still in psychological thrall to them as if we are still living in a feudal society.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 10:11

Just to clarify, I really do not want to see PC on the throne.

William will be King for sure.
Many people I know love the younger royals.
And their children are adorable.
It`s the hangers on I have no time for.

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2019 10:13

One good think about the current shitshow we’re in the middle of is that nobody can say that the Monarchy acts as a check on the government any more.....

DoomsdayCult · 29/08/2019 10:15

I am an unashamed royalist.
I’d rather have a monarchy than a republic democracy like in the US. You think we have corruption? It is a hundred times worse there.

GoodJobSteve · 29/08/2019 10:15

err, no, that's the opposite of democracy, and that's what we had before when the monarch could arbitrarily order beheadings.

joystir59...are you attempting to claim that (for example) France is not a democratic country? Germany?

recrudescence · 29/08/2019 10:16

The French and the Russians had the right approach I think.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 10:18

@KUGA

I know that people love the younger royals but by the time PC dies (assuming he lives as long as his mother) we will be another thirty/thirty five years down the line and Prince William will be in his sixties.

He won't be a younger Royal then.
