To think Prince Charles will be our last Monarch

Given that it could be another thirty years before Prince Charles dies, I was wondering if he will be our last Monarch.

I think that a lot will have changed by the time Prince William is due to accede the throne and that the Monarchy will have been abolished by then.

Agree with you Bertrand regarding the cuteness or otherwise of the DC.

I think Charles will be crowned asap while people are mourning the Queen, before the debate can start up about whether it's appropriate to crown an elderly man (he's 70 now and the Queen is still actively working) and go through the huge expense to taxpayers to stroke an old man's ego only for his son (William the Normal) to follow along a few years later.

It’s odd to me how people have “respect” for the Queen. I only respect people who actually do things to make themselves worthy of respect.

She's lived 93 years in the public eye without ever embarrassing us or herself, going by the rest of her family members that seems an almost miraculous feat, and she has had an important diplomatic role with world leaders - and their respect - since the 1950s until the current day. She also continues to work well after the point people would have accepted her retirement. Yes, I think she has absolutely earned respect.

verticality · 29/08/2019 12:12

I'd love to believe this, but there's no way it'll happen. The monarchy are enduringly popular.

BrendasUmbrella · 29/08/2019 12:15

You never know actually - perhaps the conversation will be started by William? He has never seemed happy about his future role, he looks downright petulant in public sometimes. And his eldest son looks anxious at public events already. Maybe they will decide it's not worth it, take their millions and go off to live a private life braying with their friends in a mansion in the Cotswolds.

Baguetteaboutit · 29/08/2019 12:17

They need to jazz it up a bit, for sure. Instead of giving it to the eldest maybe they could do x factor style auditions between the whole sibling set and they could do a phone in poll from the general population? Make them work for it? Jettison them out of the running if they are caught being best pals with convicted paedophiles to keep them on the straight and narrow?

BrendasUmbrella · 29/08/2019 12:18

The monarchy are enduringly popular.

The Queen is popular, and like I said above she has earned her popularity, but I think things will change dramatically once she's gone and Sulky Father and Sulky Son are what we are left with.

Fuzzyend · 29/08/2019 12:20

In the real world, how much does it really matter?

They hold no real power, on balance probably more good PR for the country than bad (just) and have no impact on 99.9% of the populations daily lives (other than those who spend their time getting wound up by tabloid news)

I think we've got bigger problems to focus on at the moment.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 29/08/2019 12:24

I'm very glad this question has been thrown into stark relief. As a committed republican I've been saying for years that the UK constitution is unfit for purpose.

Have to say I didn't want to see it happen this way.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 29/08/2019 12:25

I think we've got bigger problems to focus on at the moment.

No. They are part and parcel of the same overarching problem.

HMArsey · 29/08/2019 12:28

she has had an important diplomatic role with world leaders - and their respect - since the 1950s until the current day.

But we're constantly hearing that she must be kept out of politics. If all she's doing is hosting dinners she could be replaced by Elton John, he throws legendarily good parties.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 12:32

Yeah - let's just have Elton John as King.

Problem solved.

OP posts:
LadyRannaldini · 29/08/2019 12:33

I predict that William will be King within 15 years, you heard it here first!

RedFormica · 29/08/2019 12:34

The Queen must be so disappointed in her children - they are all so vile. Especially now that this business with Prince Andrew has come out. The younger royals seem a lot more down to earth - the two princes especially but i think having a mother like Diana really helped ground them!

Hard to tell what will happen in 30 years - i mean did we even think we'd be in an even bigger mess 3 years after the ref? Having said that it seems unlikely the monarchy will survive the next 3 decades. There has been a great shift in the world and the world's politics in the last few years. I honestly feel people have become hardened, more politically aware and critical of those in power.

dottiedodah · 29/08/2019 12:37

I am quite fond of the Royal Family and often read about them as My Mum loved them all so much (she has passed now).A sort of link to the past if you like. However I feel that in a modern society we should have a much shorter Civil list TBH. Aside from her own DC and GC we are paying a fortune for people we have never even seen!.If PC becomes King ,he has expressed an interest for living in Windsor Castle I remember reading somewhere .With the amount of people having to resort to food banks and so on it seems an expensive luxury TBH

RedFormica · 29/08/2019 12:38

To clarify - i think this is a good thing btw.

I used to think mumsnet was just a place where people talked about nappies. It's good we're having these discussions within varied forums and platforms!

Villageidiots · 29/08/2019 12:40

Hard to describe W and H as down to earth! Particularly H. Does he have a role? Shockingly extravagent for someone who doesn't work.

I think you could be right OP.

The inequality and hypocrisy is really getting people down.

I have respect for the queen, not for the rest of the RF.

Also the younger generations have no interest in the RF so they will become even more unpopular.

I think PC will do a lot of damage when he's on the throne & some of the younger royals are a PR nightmare and already discrediting the RF.

mindproject · 29/08/2019 12:48

I really hope you are wrong. I really hope the Queen is our last monarch. I find the royal family disgusting.

Funguy · 29/08/2019 12:48

Useless and over-rich. I hope they are deposed.Prince Andrew should be in prison by the looks of it. It would be great to have someone noble as a figurehead. Like Greta Thunberg.

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2019 12:49

“Hard to describe W and H as down to earth! Particularly H. Does he have a role? Shockingly extravagent for someone who doesn't work.”
Calling them “working” is obviously absurd. But within the absurd parameters, H works harder than W.

mindproject · 29/08/2019 12:49

I don't get why anyone likes the Queen. Just google Mohawk children and see if you still like her so much.

AdrenalinBrush · 29/08/2019 12:50

The British monarch is usually viewed as being at the top of the social class structure.

Class discrimination is still rife in this country. Its time to bring our social structure into the 21st Century and it starts with getting rid of the RF and becoming a republic.

zafferana · 29/08/2019 12:52

I don't have a problem with the monarch and the direct line to the throne (so Charles, William, George), what pisses me off is all the other members of the RF (bar Princess Anne, who is the hardest working royal of all).

I can't stand all the waste of public money that goes into keeping everyone else - Andrew and bloody Fergie, Edward, Harry, Beatrice and Eugenie, and all the various Dukes and Duchesses and other hangers on, who bugger all for this country (except embarrass us on the world stage), and who live in fucking great houses at the public's expense.

I'd like to see a complete revamp of our RF so that only the monarch and her/his direct line is supported by the public purse and everyone else has to shift for themselves.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 29/08/2019 12:53

Another one who is sick of the whole lot of them. They're a bunch of dinosaurs from a different time and should be got rid of pronto. Also, I think Queen has gripped grimly onto power because she's believes firmly that God has put her there. She's no different from a bloody Pharaoh, thinking she's got a divine right. Bollocks to them all.
