To think Prince Charles will be our last Monarch

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 09:49

Given that it could be another thirty years before Prince Charles dies, I was wondering if he will be our last Monarch.

I think that a lot will have changed by the time Prince William is due to accede the throne and that the Monarchy will have been abolished by then.

In fact, Prince William could easily be over 70 before he comes to the throne.

The way it’s going it’s going to be “President Johnson For Life”.

DoomsdayCult · 29/08/2019 10:20

The Queen did not “check” Boris because she is in favour of Brexit.
I’m surprised at the number of posters who seem to think she is in disagreement with Brexit but failed to “check” Boris due to only being a figurehead or whatever.
The Government hasn’t “gone rogue”. They held a referendum, leave won. Parliament voted on whether to rule out a no deal Brexit and voted not to rule it out.
We may or may not personally agree with Brexit, but it has been through the democratic parliamentary process multiple times.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 29/08/2019 10:23

I’d rather have a monarchy than a republic democracy like in the US. You think we have corruption? It is a hundred times worse there.

Do you honestly think that this is because we have a monarchy? Really?

Because I don’t think it’s Old Liz stopping UK society from setting fire to workers’ rights, getting rid of the NHS, cancelling all maternity pay or shooting up primary schools.

DoomsdayCult · 29/08/2019 10:23

@GoodJobSteve
“We clearly, urgently need a proper constitution, and a head of state with power to constrain the government when it goes 'rogue'.”

What, you mean like Trump? Or Chávez? And what do we do when the head of state goes rogue which is much more likely than hundreds of MPs in parliament going rogue.

snitzelvoncrumb · 29/08/2019 10:24

I think they may have more chance of staying around if they skip Charles, and go straight to William. I think there will still be a royal family, but they will have to fund it themselves and will just be a tourist attraction as goodjobsteve said. I think once the queen goes all the commonwealth countries will leave, and it will slowly be the end. Charles has made such an idiot of himself there will be no respect for him as there is with the queen .

Lochlorien · 29/08/2019 10:27

I think the tradition of monarch will continue on to Prince Charles, and then William. However, I think it will become a much more low-key affair as I think William already wishes.

Peregrina · 29/08/2019 10:27

The Queen may or may not like Brexit, but I am 100% sure that she doesn't want to see her kingdom broken up. This is now on the cards, although she could still be Queen in Scotland if the Scots so chose.

Jemima232 · 29/08/2019 10:27

Charles has made such an idiot of himself there will be no respect for him as there is with the Queen

I absolutely agree with this.

But he will be crowned. There is no precedent in these circumstances for just jumping to Prince William, much as this would be very popular.

As a life-long republican, I hope you’re right, but I’m not particularly optimistic.

Most people just think “I like the royals” “Kate is pretty, George is cute” etc etc. They are not interested in, or do not understand, the constitutional issues.

If there was a serious move toward republicanism, we would have to decide on what to replace it with. Good luck with getting politicians to agree on that...

If we decided to have an elected figurehead presidency, as in Germany or Ireland, who would it be? President Blair? President Beckham? How would you prevent the election turning into a tabloid celebrity circus?

danmthatonestakentryanotheer · 29/08/2019 10:28

I hope so if only to have a better National Anthem.

DoomsdayCult · 29/08/2019 10:31

I’m talking our whole system of government with a monarch as HoS, and the Houses of Parliament. And yes, I do think our system has resulted in better protection for its people.

The US split off 250yrs ago...and look at them and how well the system you advocate has worked for them. Much fewer workers rights (no right to paid sick or holiday time for example), no NHS & millions with zero healthcare or ability to see a doctor, no maternity pay, and the highest gun crime in the world. Also, worst food production and distribution system, highest levels child poverty and death, worst education system in G7, extremely high national deficit, second worst polluter, militaristic and war mongering international relations....

Dustyroad63 · 29/08/2019 10:32

I can't believe in this day and age we still have them. Total scroungers and no better than you or I.
Entitled bloody idiots.
Get rid.

creamdream · 29/08/2019 10:35

What are the chances that all the Queen's children are weirdos?

Dapplegrey · 29/08/2019 10:36

The French and the Russians had the right approach I think.

So you would like to see the monarchy murdered? What method? Guillotine like France, or firing squad like Russia?
Children first or adults first?

lyralalala · 29/08/2019 10:37

I don't think the British population in general are fiesty enough to really push for a big change like getting rid of the monarchy.

There's a lot of people unhappy about Boris' move, but there won't be widespread riots or protests about it.

Going by how healthy the Queen looks complared to unhealthy PC looks I doubt he'll be King for long, if at all.

noodlenosefraggle · 29/08/2019 10:37

Caves was a dictator so had no Parliament. Trump can't do what he wants, because as we will soon find out, Congress and the American Constitution holds him to account.
Parliaments role is to check the government. The Commons is the only elected body in Parliament. That doesn't change if we have an elected head of state. we don't get rid of Parliament. At present the monarch has no role whatsoever. They can't act as a check on the government. If we had an elected HiS they would hopefully be someone with some experience and intelligence who could act as an advisor or go between in the acerbic advisor of deadlock in Paliament like this for example. We are far more vulnerable than the US to a government going rogue, as we have just found out. The Queen, even in the unlikely event that she actually is against Brexit, can't do a damn thing.

noodlenosefraggle · 29/08/2019 10:39

N ot acerbic advisor. Independent advisor! Bloody kindle!

Eeyoreshouse · 29/08/2019 10:39

YABU but only because the Monarchy should blast out with a bang (the Queen) and not with a whimper (Charles)!

LaMarschallin · 29/08/2019 10:39

I wasn't keen on the "AIBU/AINBU" tick thing when it first arrived.

But this is interesting. The vote so far is a lot more 50/50 than I expected.

Obviously, 46% to 54% (at time of my posting this) would have easily won eg the Brexit vote.

But I thought it would have weighed more heavily on the side of the queen being the last monarch.

Kanga83 · 29/08/2019 10:41

I'd rather the Queen was our last monarch, then do away with the lot of them.

recrudescence · 29/08/2019 10:43

So you would like to see the monarchy murdered? What method? Guillotine like France, or firing squad like Russia?
Children first or adults first?

I am a reasonable person and would settle for exile or life imprisonment.

LaMarschallin · 29/08/2019 10:44

Ah. Of course that may be exactly what it means.
I thought there'd be enough good will (and mourning for the queen) to let Charles be crowned. Then things might change.

Does this vote mean that people think he won't even attain the throne?

KUGA · 29/08/2019 10:44

Fair point.
But I can`t see Charles living another Thirty years tbh.

noodlenosefraggle · 29/08/2019 10:45

lyralala I think they will be much more slimmed down as people lose interest in them.I don't know many people of Williams age (or even my age) who care enough about the Royals to block roads outside hospitals when a Royal baby is due for weeks on end for example. By the time Wills is king, the generation who really love them will be gone. There won't be the work for even Charlotte or Louis to do.I think apathy will end them.
