Feeling wistful about my Mum's chicken curry - it looked like a strange green lumpy mess, but tasted divine!

And her apple crumble... she put semolina in it for extra crunch.... mmm.

Roast dinner. Everything else was terrible.

ScreamingValenta · 10/08/2019 11:00

Apple pie. Her pastry is like no other.

cardibach · 10/08/2019 11:00

Welsh cakes. But to be fair, that’s true of every Welsh person’s mum!

whattodo2019 · 10/08/2019 11:01

Lasagne

FlamedToACrisp · 10/08/2019 11:06

Roast potatoes with duck fat so good! There was a macaroni and cheese battle in our family but my grans is still the best. My mums isn’t saucy enough :p

YesItsMeIDontCare · 10/08/2019 11:11

Food. Seriously there is nothing my mum can't cook to perfection. Cowbag 😁.

FlamedToACrisp · 10/08/2019 11:12

@YesItsMeIDontCare so, no pressure on you then?

Nothing. She overcooks everything, grey chewy meat, sloppy mushy vegetables and no seasoning in anything.
Actually, That's being cruel, once she made an apple pie which was passable :D

SinglePringle · 10/08/2019 11:14

Nothing. She was / is a shocking cook. No interest in food and doesn’t understand why anyone would want to eat things with a sauce / gravy.

I’ve done Christmas dinner (a meal she hates) since I was 17 years old.

basicbitch16 · 10/08/2019 11:15

@FlamedToACrisp You should make some, they're v easy! I did once & I hate baking, but they were lush

InsertFunnyUsername · 10/08/2019 11:15

Spag bol, Chilli and a Sunday roast they were my favourite.

Even when I flew the nest and was working and partying, I would get a text that she had made one of these dinners, and my portion was in the fridge.Grin

So Regularly let myself in at 5am and ate the spag bol pissed

basicbitch16 · 10/08/2019 11:15

Roast, spag bol and lamb tagines 😍

PorkHollywood · 10/08/2019 11:16

A roast dinner, but especially the gravy.

userxx · 10/08/2019 11:16

Goulash. I could eat some now.

grafittiartist · 10/08/2019 11:16

My mum can't cook- never does.
But there's nothing better than her cup of tea ( it's probably the company that makes that special) :)

BigSandyBalls2015 · 10/08/2019 11:16

Nothing her cooking was dreadful, she said to me when she was in her 90s “do you ever look back in your childhood dear and think what appalling food you were given” Grin.

Sunday lunch was memorable .... gravy so thick you had to spoon it out and scrape it off the roof of your mouth. Pudding was a mr Kipling bakewell tart which for reasons my brother and I will never understand, mum would shove under the grill to blacken the icing before serving.

MsVestibule · 10/08/2019 11:17

Scrambled eggs. Everything else is a bit meh, TBH.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 10/08/2019 11:18

Another with a mum who can’t cook. Everything comes from a packet. My childhood was a sea of frozen orange foods.
Hence I now cook as much as I can from nothing. I try not to use packets or jars and add flavour where I can. I am not a brilliant cook but definitely improved on my mother’s cooking.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 10/08/2019 11:18

I left home thinking it was normal to put veg on to boil for Sunday lunch at 7am

FlamedToACrisp · 10/08/2019 11:19

@BigSandyBalls2015 when the gravy was too thick we used to quote from Tony Hancock: "I thought my mother was a bad cook, but at least her gravy moved about!"

Loved her japanese curry, and oven chicken with chestnuts or potatoes.

Buyitinbamboo · 10/08/2019 11:20

Oh my poor mum, her potato salad is pretty good but mine is better that's pretty much it. She makes up for it in personality and enthusiasm

My dad makes the best gravy

Jurassicmuma · 10/08/2019 11:20

Lasagne. Most other meals were/ average but her lasagne is amazing. So is my mils lasagne but I'm terrible at it

ChicCroissant · 10/08/2019 11:20

Scones and lemon drizzle cake. She also did a good chicken curry, mild and fruity. Fab Christmas dinner too. We would always have a running buffet if there was any big event on the TV, a habit I have forced on to my DH (his family would ignore anything like that Grin )

My cousins will stampede for one nan's apple pie.
