Feeling wistful about my Mum's chicken curry - it looked like a strange green lumpy mess, but tasted divine!

And her apple crumble... she put semolina in it for extra crunch.... mmm.

My DM had a completely different method for shepherds pie which I do the same way. She minced cold cooked lamb and onions, boiled and mashed the potatoes, mixed all three ingredients together as opposed to potato on top, put in a tin and roasted. Served with baked beans and brown sauce.

My absolute favourite was plum batter - Yorkshire pudding into a hot pan with some dripping, to which she added halved Victoria plums and lots of sugar, All the juices ran into the Yorkshire pud and it was to die for. My friend's NDN has a Victoria plum tree and I get a big bagful at the end of August which disappear at an alarming rate.

DM was Welsh and the third thing was Welsh Cakes. I occasionally buy some from Waitrose but they are no match. I should learn to make my own.

Chicken soup
Roast dinner
Mince and
Cheese scones
Macaroni cheese

I still cook all of these the way she does Grin

Honourable mentions also to my Dad’s chicken curry, and my granny’s trifle (made with Swiss roll in a glass dish - looked well fancy) and rice pudding.

Greyhound22 · 10/08/2019 13:03

Yorkshire pudding
Roast potatoes
Proper chips
Fishcakes (they're just mash with tuna mixed in but me and my son love them)
Scones

DM does traditional British food well and DD does good Mediterranean food so me and DB grew up with good food tbh. My DB is a good cook too but me....not so much.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 10/08/2019 13:04

Sorry should say mince and tatties

GibbonLover · 10/08/2019 13:07

My mum makes the best scouse ever but, much like the welshcakes, I suspect this applies to most Liverpudlians. It's probably not the scouse that was the best but the memories.

CarolDanvers · 10/08/2019 13:08

Quiche.

I'm NC but I really miss that quiche Sad

maddiemookins16mum · 10/08/2019 13:09

My mum was no Delia Smith BUT her Macaroni cheese, bread and butter pudding and mince and tatties were the best.

God I miss her.

Likethebattle · 10/08/2019 13:09

Nothing her food was awful. Veg boiled for 30 minutes, undercooked sausages. Chips with everything put into cold fat to heat up rather than hearing the oil first then cramming too many in so the side of the chip was completely white. Putting beans on at the same time as the chips, beans cooked for 30 minutes are inedible. Mince and tatties I still refuse to eat after how she made them.

Anything meat based. Amazing chicken escalopes. Golden crunchy with home made breadcrumbs.

Pork shoulder in wild mushroom sauce.

God I'm hungry all of the sudden! Grin

Ninkaninus · 10/08/2019 13:39

Funnily enough my mum cooked liver really nicely! Once in a very great while I actually have a hankering for it...

Liver sliced into thin pieces and soaked in milk, then dipped into egg and flour, and fried in butter. Served with rice and Bernaise sauce out of a packet. It really was very good.

Chocolatedaim · 10/08/2019 13:40

My mom wasn’t and still isn’t a great cook, lots of minced beef recipes that all tasted similar.
She made rice pudding once, I will never forget it, it superglued our mouths shut 😂

MrsMozartMkII · 10/08/2019 13:40

Many things, but her scones.

I really miss going to see her and having a cup of tea and a scone.

NaturalBornWoman · 10/08/2019 13:47

Pastry, rice pudding, braised steak and onions and stew and dumplings. I'm a good cook but I can't make a stew or braised steak taste like she did.

cricketmum84 · 10/08/2019 13:58

I'm veggie now so can't eat these :( but ever since I was little my mum has made these absolutely gorgeous sausage meat pinwheels for every party or gathering or girls night she throws.

Just sausage meat with her secret mix of herbs rolled up on puff pastry and cut into rounds before baking.

Also steak in ale. Another one I can't have anymore!

TheOnlySnot · 10/08/2019 13:59

Nothing-my mum is an awful cook!

Susiesue61 · 10/08/2019 13:59

Lemon meringue. I cant eat anyone else's because it's not the same!
Pastry in general really.
I make better mince and mash than her though 😆

ManoloChooBoutin · 10/08/2019 14:00

Rice pudding. It was amazing. Used to sit in the oven smelling lovely for ages.

She wasn't great at most other things. Not bad, just not good. Don't think cooking was something she particularly enjoyed! She never showed any interest in teaching me either.

I married an excellent cook. He had me at 'full English?"

YesItsMeIDontCare · 10/08/2019 14:01

To be fair to your mum, that may have been deliberate 😂.

Skinandbones · 10/08/2019 14:04

Mum was a waitress way back when and would cook food for customers at their tables. Loved her steak Diane, lemon cheese tarts, (never lemon curd). And braising steak with onions and homemade gravey. My ds25 has just requested that for dinner this week. I hope that mine will pick up some of my recipes down the line.

FlamedToACrisp · 10/08/2019 14:10

If he was offering you breakfast, I suspect he had you before that Wink

Bread and butter pudding. Poached eggs.

PorkHollywood · 10/08/2019 14:22

My nana's lobby was amazing, never had anything like it since.

Aww FIL (85) makes a fantastic lobby, I thought it was just his made up word for it.

Fruitchouli · 10/08/2019 14:23

Christmas dinner. I’ve never had better.

Chicken curry. So tasty!

Terrysyogurt · 10/08/2019 14:40
