Feeling wistful about my Mum's chicken curry - it looked like a strange green lumpy mess, but tasted divine!

And her apple crumble... she put semolina in it for extra crunch.... mmm.

Roasts - especially the gravy
Lemon meringue pie
Pretty much anything she cooks is delicious.

My dc both say she’s the best cook and Im second! So unfair Grin

Schwibble · 10/08/2019 23:33

Roast potatoes
Homemade chips
Cherry pie
Homemade pizza

Northernsoulgirl45 · 11/08/2019 00:22

Soda bread, pies and crumbles. Treacle pudding.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 11/08/2019 00:23

Omg forgot about chips. Basically potato chink shallow fried but so good.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 11/08/2019 00:23

Chunks

Zerrin13 · 11/08/2019 01:28

My mum is a brilliant cook. She can make literally anything taste delicious

Fizzpopwhizzbang · 11/08/2019 01:32

Nothing. She's always hated cooking and puts no effort in if she is forced to cook.

She'd give you a cracking make over though! Any skin tone. That's where she shines.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 11/08/2019 03:30

Grandma: Porridge (with cream, butter, sugar and syrup all stirred in), jam tarts, fry up- best fried bread ever.

Dad: Pancakes, toast & marmite

Mum: Pavlova, scones & cheese scones, roast dinners (especially her proper, old fashioned gravy), crumble. She's a good cook anyway but those are my favourites. No roast comes near. I bake better than her though!

Ex recently admitted to missing my cooking. I may felt momentarily victorious!

OVienna · 11/08/2019 08:01

@BigSandyBalls2015 Grinlove the Bakewell tart grilling

Lebou · 11/08/2019 11:08

Roast lamb with loads of garlic, French style. Never had any other that comes close!

toomanypillows · 11/08/2019 11:12

My mum used to be a pastry chef ❤️ Her mince pies at Christmas were divine.
After she was a pastry chef, she trained to become a regular chef, so all food was fabulous. Except Yorkshire Puddings. She could never get the hang of those 😂 conversely I'm really good at them, so if we have Sunday dinner at hers, then I'm (proudly) on duty

givemesomehelp · 11/08/2019 11:16

Her Sunday dinner!
Also I miss living with my mom and dad because she would make me a full English or bacon and egg sandwiches every morning and they're still my favourite breakfasts, I'm still yet to have a full English or bacon and egg sandwich that's as nice as moms even though it's something so simple!

theWarOnPeace · 11/08/2019 11:16

My mum is a dreadful cook, totally without skill. One thing she gets right though, is chicken stew. Probably one thing you don’t need to have much skill to cook, as it simmers for so long it kind of flavours itself.

HearMeSnore · 11/08/2019 11:26

Steak and kidney casserole with dumplings. Proper comfort food. It's hard to find steak and kidney anything these days and when I need a fix I have to rely on Fray Bentos - which I also love - but DM's is utter heaven.

She's also very good at throwing together random ingredients to make something more than passable for dinner when the cupboard is nearly bare. She once made a sort of lasagne out of layers of bacon, chopped onion and grated cheese. It was bloomin' gorgeous and I keep trying to emulate it (haven't got it quite right yet...)

exLtEveDallas · 11/08/2019 11:28

Bread Pudding (the suet version)
Rice pudding
Chocolate and Brandy Cake
Cheats Faggots
Liver and Onions
Fried Chicken

She doesn't really 'cook' any more - her and dad are both in their 90s and it's easier to chuck a ready meal in the micro. Although she does still make puddings - dad has a sweet tooth!

I make these foods for them whenever they come and stay, but I always think mine lack 'something' to make them as good as mums.

bengalcat · 11/08/2019 12:47

Roast potatoes , Lemon meringue pie and Christmas pudding

wifesupremacist · 11/08/2019 13:01

I think I'm generally a better cook than my mum was (not trying to brag, I'm not amazing or anything) but she used to make a beef curry that I absolutely can't for the life of me replicate. She died last year and took the recipe with her Angry

augustusglupe · 11/08/2019 13:08

Trifle. I’ve never made it but will one day. She used pink Blancmange instead of custard and I loved it.
She used to make me something called Fish dish when I was little. It was just a very simple fish pie.
My Dad made the best Spaghetti Bol I’ve ever tasted.
They’ve both been gone for over 20 years now...love this thread Smile

Bubbletrouble43 · 11/08/2019 13:15

Lucky to have a mum that is a pretty fantastic cook, lots of exotic foreign dishes i didnt appreciate as a kid but her apple crumble is simply one of the best things in the world.

thesockgap · 11/08/2019 13:25

Roast potatoes. I think I make pretty good ones, but my Mum's were just out of this world. She used to cook them in lard (!) and they would always be super super crunchy on the outside, and sometimes you would bite into one and fat would sizzle out of it! Sounds appalling in these health conscious times but they tasted amazing. I've tried everything, cooking in goose fat, lard, duck fat, oil, tossing them in flour, tossing them in semolina, but although they are good, they'll never be like my Mum's :(
Other than that, she was never the best cook in the world, but I do miss her roasts!

IsobelRae23 · 11/08/2019 13:27

Not my Mum, but my Nanny’s:-
Apple Pie
Gooseberry Pie
Blackcurrant Tart
Trifle
Custard
Sunday Roast Dinners
Stew
Swede, potato, sausage and onion gravy

IsobelRae23 · 11/08/2019 13:29

Oh and exmil’s roast potatoes. I could eat bowl full after bowl full of them, dipped in her gravy, that’s her one slice or two gravy, it’s that thick!
