Feeling wistful about my Mum's chicken curry - it looked like a strange green lumpy mess, but tasted divine!

And her apple crumble... she put semolina in it for extra crunch.... mmm.

OP posts:

Cheese and potato pie. I really regret never getting the recipe from her.
I once had one that was almost as good as hers, but it was in a pub 200 miles away from where I live.

She made great sponge cakes, too, but mine are almost as good since I started using Mary Berry's recipe, and I've now equalled the excellence of her spag bol (her recipe came from an Italian neighbour).

womblessofwimbledon · 10/08/2019 11:22

Turkey curry after Christmas but apart from that she's not a great cook

InTheHeatofLisbon · 10/08/2019 11:22

Chapattis and samosas. She lived in Pakistan for a few years before she married my Dad, and then taught Urdu to English in Lancashire for women who had moved over and wanted to learn the language. So we always had shit hot Pakistani food growing up.

She was a horrible cook with everything else (sorry Ma) Grin wonderful Mum, shite cook.

SometimesItRains · 10/08/2019 11:23

Christmas cake and lemon cheesecake. Everything else was good, but I’ve been able to match it since I’ve moved out and learnt to cook. I can’t match those two though - she is the best at cake.

ThatCurlyGirl · 10/08/2019 11:26

Omelettes - I'm convinced she has a secret ingredient she hasn't told us so she remains omelette queen 👸🏻

Madmoggie · 10/08/2019 11:27

Bread pudding and rice pudding. Never had anything as good since

PunkyBubba · 10/08/2019 11:28

Another one whose mum is an amazing cook.. I am close to matching her bolognaise sauce after years of trying.. but nowhere near with anything else 🤷🏻‍♀️. Her Lamb Biryani is the top request when family/friends visit her.. amazing 😋

Mother in law does the best lasagne..

Grandmother made the best meat pies.. I miss her (and them) a lot 😢

Ronsters · 10/08/2019 11:30

Her apple pie, she makes lovely pastry.
Apple crumble is pretty good too.

whogoncheckmeBoo · 10/08/2019 11:31

Everything. She is an amazing cook. I’m not a bad cook myself but my husband and kids all prefer her cooking to mine. I can’t argue or feel bad about this because she makes everything better! She has taught me how to cook, but all her ‘recipes’ are secret. Mainly because she doesn’t have them she just adds stuff to dishes as she goes along. You are also not allowed to leave any food on your plate. To do so would be like saying you don’t love her. So lovely food comes with conditions - you end up fat Grin

Guessmydog · 10/08/2019 11:35

Turkey twizzlers, used to bagsy the shit outta those..

Witchend · 10/08/2019 11:39

Yorkshire puddings
Chicken pie

Are the two I make, eat, and think "not like mum's"

azuldan · 10/08/2019 11:41

My mum is an okay cook, nothing particularly stands out. But my Nan... everything she cooked was amazing. I miss that Sad

MrsKittyFane1 · 10/08/2019 11:42

OP Please tell me how to make the curry green.
I often crave school dinner green mince curry with sultanas... 1970/80 style.

NOT the same as Thai green curry.

botoxbeckons · 10/08/2019 11:42

DM was a very average day-to-day cook but made stellar ‘occasion’ puddings for Christmas and parties - whisky cake, Austrian torte, chocolate cherry trifle, pavlova. And her bread pudding was unbelievable, the best.

She’s now in the grip of dementia and it’s heartbreaking to think her cooking is yet another little bit of her we’ve lost and won’t get back - especially as I don’t really remember the last time we had one of her puds (at the time we’d have been unaware that it was special because she’d never do it again).

Happy memories though.

stucknoue · 10/08/2019 11:45

She makes great cake but to be honest (and yes it sounds boastful) I can cook everything she can better, though of course it's because I cook to my personal taste (she does over cook veg)

Fuzzyend · 10/08/2019 11:45

Birthday cakes.
Coffee and walnut cake.
Egg mayo sandwiches.
Sausage pie.
Lasagne.
Lots of other stuff.

I miss my mum.

Spingtrolls · 10/08/2019 11:46

Nothing at all. Shame as her siblings and mum are amazing cooks.
20 years later and my dc's primary school teachers still remember listening to their tales about nans cooking

RavenLG · 10/08/2019 11:51

Roast dinners especially her Yorkshire Puds.
I was going to say proper stodge meals like
Hot pot etc but now I think they’re not really good, they’re just comforting. But bland. She’s a very fussy eater so nothing has onions in and she hates the texture, no pepper, no spices, no veg at all in anything just on the side. The most “exotic” thing I got as a kid was spaghetti bolognese but that was just fried mince and dolmio mixed in. Steak was literally cremated. Her homemade chips were amazing though, even if the chip pan used to terrify me lol.

Marylou62 · 10/08/2019 11:52

Roast dinner...any roast dinner. Her gravy is a meal on it's own! Oh..and apple pie. I live 4.5 hours away but on visits there is always a roast nearly ready. Even my DCs say Grandmas roast are the best and I totally agree...although mine are a good 2nd best!

girlwithadragontattoo · 10/08/2019 11:54

My mum used to make a chocolate steam pudding and it was the best! My best friends dad makes the best roast dinner and nothing ever compares

Londonmummy66 · 10/08/2019 11:55

Cheese scones - they just melt in the mouth...

She also made a pretty mean jam sandwich cake, coffee and walnut cake, apple and blackberry crumble, raspberry jam, blackcurrant jam and toad in the hole.

I'm feeling hungry now

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 10/08/2019 11:58

Shortbread. I've used her recipe but it doesn't turn out the same.

And anything with pastry - rhubarb tart, apple pie, pecan pie, chicken pie, steak pie. I can't do pastry at all (she says it's because I have hot hands, hers are cold so can work the pastry.)

I make better meringues than her though.

AngeloMysterioso · 10/08/2019 11:59

Burnt things... watery curry... stringy stew... my cooking skills surpassed hers when I was about 12.

She can pour milk on cereal like no other though!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 10/08/2019 12:00

Mincepies, the woman's pastry is amazing and her apple pies too.

and her chicken pie, it's only shop puff pastry and a tin of M&S Chicken in White Wine ( pronounced WaitWaine) sauce, but it's the taste of my childhood.

chesterfuckingdraws · 10/08/2019 12:01

Lasagne
Beef stew with kidney
Mince and potatoes

I can do an ok lasagne but it's sometimes too sloppy, the other 2 I wouldn't even attempt.
