Feeling wistful about my Mum's chicken curry - it looked like a strange green lumpy mess, but tasted divine!

And her apple crumble... she put semolina in it for extra crunch.... mmm.

Lobby is like a broth/stew.

The Chinese takeaway, my mum was an awful cook, if I had to make it on her cooking alone then I would never had made it! I remember the spag bol with spaghetti that snapped and crunched because it was raw, the chips she only managed to cook on the outside, the list is endless. My dad cooked on weekends though, I still make his homemade soup now.

Londonmummy66 · 10/08/2019 14:57

@igotdemons I want one of your mum's cheese scones to compare to my mum's now.....

JammieCodger · 10/08/2019 15:04

Her meringues were awesome. I’ve never tasted another that has come anywhere near their perfect ratio of crisp to chew. She also made a damn fine potato salad and I’ve never matched her crumble in decades of trying. (She has passed the crumble skill onto my youngest though.)

My dad’s makes the best mulled wine, to a recipe known only to him. I’ll have to get him to write it down and leave it with his solicitor, to be read only in the event of his death.

Mince pies. My Mum made them without a pastry top, instead they would have white glace icing on. Used to love them after a couple of days when the icing would dry out properly.
She made nice cakes and scones as well, though I hated wasn't keen on her dinners, though to be fair I am a fussy eater and have always hated meat.

Grasspigeons · 10/08/2019 15:09

My mum was too flighty to get nostaligic about stuff - she cooked fine but would have a recipes for a few months and then move on. My dad made good cheese on toast.

Ellabella989 · 10/08/2019 15:12

Apple Crumble!
She also does really good risottos that are as good as any I’ve had in upmarket Italian restaurants.

Chicken in bread crumbs. Schnitzel 😋
The local chicken shop that has an amazing reputation and known as the best in the UK comes nowhere near my mums schnitzel. Everyone goes mad for this chicken shop, I tasted it and no, it’s crap compared to my mums.

Bakewell tart

Sugarformyhoney · 10/08/2019 15:19

My mum thinks she’s an amazing cook tbh some of her stuff is ok but it’s never a house is look forward to going to for a meal
My siblings often say she’s a great cook but only to massage her ego for a free get together at hers 😂Tbf they’re worse cooks than she is

isitautumnyet · 10/08/2019 15:20

This isn't about my mum but I remember my nans sandwiches where so much better than anyone else's . Not entirely sure why she used the same ingredients as everyone else ! They just seemed to taste so much nicer !

areyoubeingserviced · 10/08/2019 15:28

Christmas dinner and chicken curry. There is no one that cooks this better than my mother.

DareDevil223 · 10/08/2019 15:37

My dad was an amazing cook and did most of it. His roast potatoes were second to none, crispy outside and fluffy inside. His chicken casserole with peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes, served with rice was legendary and I still make it today although it never tastes as good as his. Roast dinners, curries, tandoori, Chinese food, he was very ahead of his time in the 1970s and 80s (he and mum lived abroad in the far east before I was born and that's where he picked up a lot of the international dishes.

He died too soon over 25 years ago and I still miss him Sad

Yorkshire pudding, we used to have it as a first course served with gravy, followed by tasty roast beef etc. She was the Queen of Yorkshire pudding!

Waterzooi, so delicious, and she also made a lovely chicken in egg sauce served with rice.

Skate with black butter sauce, we always had fish on a Friday, and that was my favourite, I liked skate cold too, served with mayonnaise.

A winter favourite was a thick mince with gravy and crispy dumplings.

My lovely Mum has been gone for many years now, but I still think about her and miss her a lot. Here's to you canny lass! Wine

GBroGal · 10/08/2019 15:44

Bread - every week, she baked the best ever wholemeal and when she baked white bread, she always made Chelsea buns with some of the leftover dough.

foxychox · 10/08/2019 15:50

Cottage pie made with left over roast beef, bloody gorgeous!

LordBuckley · 10/08/2019 15:56

Nothing, she was a terrible cook.

gabsdot · 10/08/2019 16:16

Apple pie.
I make a pretty good one myself but it's just not quite as good.

Minxmumma · 10/08/2019 16:19

Bread pudding! Give me Mums bread pud and custard on a cold day and I'm a happy woman!

FenellaVelour · 10/08/2019 16:22

Nothing. I’ve never seen her cook.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/08/2019 16:28

Absolutely bloody nothing and this is why I learned to cook, so that I didn't have to eat it!

morningtoncrescent62 · 10/08/2019 16:30

My mum did the most gorgeous roast potatoes ever. Crispy outside, melting inside, full of flavour.

Everything else she cooked was a bit meh to be honest. Meat was always too dry, fried food swam in oil, cakes were heavy and she was a stranger to every vegetable except the tinned pea. But her roast potatoes could not have been bettered.

Roast dinners

Boxing Day bubble & squeak from leftover Christmas vegetables.

Her mother was a dire cook, so Maman determined to cook well went to France when she left school to work as a assistant in children’s home/convent. She mastered the basics of good french food - roux & omelet.

As a family cook, she referred to a batter-splattered tome by Philip Harben.

CloserIAm2Fine · 10/08/2019 16:45

Mince pies

My mums mince pies make Christmas for me, even though I can make them myself it’s just not the same.
