To be pissed off over eggs?

Ok I know this is totally a first world problem but I'm feeling rather pissed off today so this could be the last straw lol!

My DH went to the supermarket this morning and I had put "free range eggs" on the list. I'm a vegetarian, almost vegan but not quite given up cheese yet. I'm quite hot on animal welfare.

He came back from the shops with eggs from caged hens. Doesn't see anything wrong with this at all and says because I don't eat eggs I don't get a say. I say that I don't want eggs from caged hens in my house and I don't want my family contributing to the survival of that industry.

Am I just being a moody cow today or do I have a point??

I agree with you, but now he’s got them I would use them rather than bin them otherwise it’s a horrendous waste. If you can take them back tomorrow I would do that.

You do have a point. I think there's enough information out there for us to know that bought eggs should always be free range.

In one sense you have him a list and he didn’t follow the list so YANBU to be annoyed and you might feel strongly about animal welfare etc

But then he did the shop and presumably he will eat the eggs (and you won’t) so you don’t get to make the choice for him and YABU in that sense

You've made it clear how you feel and I'm sure he'll remember next time. Now use them and get on with your life.

I’d refuse to use them/cook with them. How can he think caged hens is ok as a concept? Has he seen the state of caged hens? Such an easy thing to avoid.

I'm not vegetarian but I absolutely insist on free range eggs. Non negotiable in our house. Luckily dh agrees.

Disrespectful arsehole. I would be seriously annoyed. You don't eat them so you don't get a say. What a joke. You have a joint household and this was a cruel way to minimise your values.

Yeah I do think I am being a little unreasonable as I won't be eating them. If he told me I could only ever buy a certain type of tomato for example I would be a bit .
I maybe overreacted a little when I accused him of supporting animal abuse.... like I say thou I'm having a mega pissed off day. But the thought of what those hens go through in those conditions breaks my heart.
Maybe I should have a glass of wine and some chocolate 😂

Free range is a con, their 'living' conditions are not much better than caged hens.

@LadySainsburySeal I'm really trying to cut cheese out. I've switched to almond milk and I use a dairy free spread. Just still struggling to find a vegan cheese that does it for me and I end up sneaking a little bit maybe once a week.

No worse than what cows go through for your cheese, really.

Sorry, with your husband on this - you cannot impose your vegetarian 'almost vegan' views on him. If he wants eggs from caged hens, and despite living with you and listening to the arguments from you he doesn't see the problem, then that is up to him.

I would really struggle to respect my partner if he thought it was ok to buy eggs from caged hens.

Yes, you are being a moody cow. His eggs, his consumer choice. You categorically cannot dictate your husband’s moral choices (even if you are right). The equivalent would be him telling you that you should eat meat because he thinks it’s ok.

Free Range doesn't equate to high welfare, it usually means the hens have access to outdoors. They are still crammed in together and forced to lay artificially high numbers of eggs.

You're a hypocrite unless you're a strict vegan. Plenty of them would be appalled your treat was made via the use and abuse of animals.

As LadySainsbury pointed out you are certainly not "hot" on vegetarianism if you can't give up cheese.

Yes Ali agree I can't force my views onto anyone else, I still cook meat for my DH and the DCs and don't ask them not to eat it.

The eggs are also for DCs and I really don't want them eating eggs from caged hens either.

Can't return them as he has already used 3 to make Yorkshire puddings earlier.

My husband is vegan and we have very different views on meat. However, although I would personally buy the cheapest as that is what I put my preference on, I always buy free range as we had a discussion early on to what he found acceptable if he was going to be in a relationship with a carnivore. So, therefore, I buy free range out of respect for him and his principles/boundaries.

@cricketmum84 I get where you are coming from if never buy eggs from battery hens. Don’t go mad, just explain why you prefer free range and ask him to make sure they’re free range from now on.

As for everyone calling you a hypocrite, it must be great to be so perfect. I. Sure they’ve never eaten meat, drank milk, eaten cheese, wore leather you’re doing your bit and I’m sure you’ll cut the cheese out in time. Good on you!

Free range eggs are marginally better than caged, but if you're imagining happy hens scratching around in the grass, you're deluded. 'Free range' hens have access to the outdoors, but the 'outdoors' is an open-topped cage with a concrete floor. They're still horribly overcrowded and many of the more bullied hens may never in their lives get near the door that lets them outside because of the crowding. And, of course, male chicks are ground up alive a few days after birth, free range or cage.
