To be pissed off over eggs?

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 17:34

Ok I know this is totally a first world problem but I'm feeling rather pissed off today so this could be the last straw lol!

My DH went to the supermarket this morning and I had put "free range eggs" on the list. I'm a vegetarian, almost vegan but not quite given up cheese yet. I'm quite hot on animal welfare.

He came back from the shops with eggs from caged hens. Doesn't see anything wrong with this at all and says because I don't eat eggs I don't get a say. I say that I don't want eggs from caged hens in my house and I don't want my family contributing to the survival of that industry.

Am I just being a moody cow today or do I have a point??

Meh. So over all this vegan stuff. The amount of packaging, processing and the capitalist employment behind making your vegan stuff is no better than vegetarian or meat stuff. You are not going to change the world by objecting to 1 box of caged hens eggs.

Bubblysqueak · 19/05/2019 17:54

If your looking for really nice vegan cheese that tastes like cheese don't get any made from coconut, they are all gross.
I have found some really nice nut cheese yes it doesn't sound pleasant that tastes like it actually should. There is a really nice nut camembert that melts exactly like the real thing from the internet Vegan shop.

Gth1234 · 19/05/2019 17:54

I think you are right. Free range are only around £1 for 6, I also try to avoid large eggs, as I gather they are harder for hens to lay. I would buy blue eggs (Cotswold Legbars), but they are quite pricy (over £2 for 6)

Mind you, we used to buy organic milk, but we don't bother any more.

Mummyoftwo91 · 19/05/2019 17:55

Yabu, sorry I'm trying to become vegan too from being vegetarian and it's a process, but your a hypocrite, I wouldn't have lost my shit over that when your still eating cheese.

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 17:56

@DerrenBrownings tbh that's exactly what DH says. I try not to buy any of the pre packaged vegan type stuff apart from almond milk. I use veg alternatives rather than things like quorn.

Have to agree with PP about welfare as well. I used to keep hens and if they don’t have lots and lots of space to roam the ground turns to mud really quickly and gets very very gross and can’t be good for the hend Envy. If you want cruelty free eggs try your local market. There is a chap with pictures of his very happy hens who sells at ours. You can taste in the eggs that the hens are healthy and well fed. Supermarket free range eggs don’t taste like that.

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 17:57

@Bubblysqueak ooh do you have a link please? I've tried the coconut mozzarella and it smelt a little funky. It melted ok but it just wasn't cheese.

You do realise that free range doesn't exactly mean chicken running happily in green fields, do you? Unless you buy them from a local neighbour and you see them, people have a very naive idea of the "free range" concept.

no more than nine hens a square metre, 10cm of feeder a bird and one drinker for 10 birds.
is better than the worst cages, but it's hardly a holiday camp!

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 18:00

@BogglesGoggles we've got a farm shop nearby that I'm going to try, last time I went the hens were all out in the front field and looked very well looked after.
At least if I go there and buy their eggs he won't have to buy the cheapo supermarket ones!!

DerrenBrownings · 19/05/2019 18:00

Honestly just eat cheese. It's fine.

Bubblegumgal · 19/05/2019 18:00

Yabu OP I don’t think you can dictate to him what he can eat- it’s his choice.

Bubblysqueak · 19/05/2019 18:01

I'm just trying to find it for you. I've got a dairy allergy so have tried everything as I really miss cheese. I found this company at Christmas and it was a life saver. Some really nice things and not as ridiculously priced as some of the vegan alternatives. (They also do some really nice chocolate without coconut or soya so doesn't have that oily texture.

llangennith · 19/05/2019 18:01

Don't waste the eggs.

diddl · 19/05/2019 18:02

" I get where you are coming from if never buy eggs from battery hens."

Didn't think that you could still get them!

Singlenotsingle · 19/05/2019 18:02

Hmmm don't know about almond milk, OP. I was reading that the pesticides being used on the almond trees are decimating huge numbers of bees.

Yabbers · 19/05/2019 18:03

If your husband isn’t vegetarian, are you ok with him buying meat?

StrawberryStarburst · 19/05/2019 18:03

@LadySainsburySeal I totally get your point but I just wanted to say that I don't think your response was at all justified. We need to encourage and praise others that make vegan lifestyle choices and then kindly bring to light other things for consideration. So well done OP for making the changes that you have done, no matter if there are still some things you want to change in the future, you've done loads more than most of the population for animal welfare, for your own health, and for the environment. I also agree with the rest of the posters that you have a point about the eggs, definitely, and I would expect my DH to buy free range; but at the end of the day you're not consuming them, so on that side I would guess it's his choice. Smile

IvanaPee · 19/05/2019 18:04

was reading that the pesticides being used on the almond trees are decimating huge numbers of bees.

Yep. I read that. You’re helping to destroy the population of bees, OP.

TheCatInTheSquare · 19/05/2019 18:06

If you're the only one that cares about cage free eggs being in the house then YOU buy them. This is just one step below the stupid ham argument in another thread.

Dieu · 19/05/2019 18:06

I don't get why people are STILL buying these eggs. Free range really doesn't cost much more.

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 18:06

Feeling a bit like I can't do anything right now! I swap out one bad thing for another!!

OP posts:
DerrenBrownings · 19/05/2019 18:07

See OP? You cant win - even almond milk is anti vegan! I wonder what vegans will eat one day when it turns out everything is bad in some way.

missbattenburg · 19/05/2019 18:07

I guess it comes down to whether your concern for chicken welfare trumps your need to be right and which of these scenarios is more likely to result in your DH buying free range eggs in future:

  • having a go at him and making it a 'thing'
  • explaining nicely that you would be happier with FR eggs rather than caged and trying to make it a favour to you to buy happy eggs

Only you know the answers to those questions...

www.greenbaysupermarket.co.uk/products/mouses-favourite-camembert-140g

Not sure how to do a link, but it's greenbays supermarket and the brand of cheese is mouse's favourite.

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 18:09

If you're the only one that cares about cage free eggs being in the house then YOU buy them

The point of the OP was that I had written free range specifically on the list. DH ignored this and bought caged because they are cheaper. It's a sad state of affairs when I have to do everything because I can't trust him to follow a simple instruction.
