To be pissed off over eggs?

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 17:34

Ok I know this is totally a first world problem but I'm feeling rather pissed off today so this could be the last straw lol!

My DH went to the supermarket this morning and I had put "free range eggs" on the list. I'm a vegetarian, almost vegan but not quite given up cheese yet. I'm quite hot on animal welfare.

He came back from the shops with eggs from caged hens. Doesn't see anything wrong with this at all and says because I don't eat eggs I don't get a say. I say that I don't want eggs from caged hens in my house and I don't want my family contributing to the survival of that industry.

Am I just being a moody cow today or do I have a point??

Anyone who has any kind of moral standards sometimes lets them slip - the only people who are never hypocrites are people who don't have any moral standards in the first place.
Umm, it’s exactly suited in this case. OP purports to be caring about animals and welfare, except when it suits her. She cares about animal welfare, except when it comes to cows because they make that yummy cheese she just can’t give up. So, actually she doesn’t care otherwise she wouldn’t eat cheese. She cares about it so much her husband must stop buying the eggs he wants to buy, but not so much she will give up cheese (or do research about bees being destroyed - i’m nowhere near vegan and eve I knew that one.)

And she’s so enraged about it she started a thread to find people who agreed with her. All sounding exactly like the definition of hypocrisy. If she held those beliefs but understood it was ok to slip up once in a while, the eggs wouldn’t be a problem.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/05/2019 19:05

He bought them - he can cook them.

AmeriAnn · 19/05/2019 19:05

This happened to me and I threw them away. They were white shelled with pale yellow yolks. Poor birds never got to peck about in any green stuff.

I have my two Rhodes Islands Reds now and get two brown eggs with dark yellow yolks every day. The hens are allowed to go anywhere they like and they do. They had a great deal of fun in my flower beds the other day..

Molecule · 19/05/2019 19:06

Dd2 worked on a large poultry farm, they had every type of system; caged, free-range, woodland and organic.

The workers all agreed that the caged birds (followed by organic) were the healthiest and seemed the happiest. The job they all hated was “clearing-up” where they went around the free-range units killing the hens that had been injured by the other ones. This was done on a daily basis.

Old hens lay large eggs, very large eggs or double yolkers usually kill the hen.

TBH, as some others have said, there really isn’t much in it from a welfare point of view; buy what you can afford, or keep your own hens.

AmeriAnn · 19/05/2019 19:08

The thing with battery eggs is they are in biscuits and cakes from the supermarket. So they will be in the food chain somewhere else

I notice some products here (US) say they use free range eggs on the product labels now. I will buy these.

TheInvestigator · 19/05/2019 19:09

@cricketmum84

Maybe look into the almond industry. It's causing the death of salmon and bees and destroying eco systems and using a ridiculous amount of water... even during the terrible droughts.

PCohle · 19/05/2019 19:11

It just seems a weird hill to die on given you'll happily cook meat. If I was your DH I'd be fairly confused.

AmeriAnn · 19/05/2019 19:11

I know the units you are talking about and I don't consider these free range. My free range hens can walk to town if they wish. They never attack each other outside - too busy rearranging my petunias.

Luciddreams · 19/05/2019 19:12

@BogglesGoggles Sorry my post came across unclear, wild hens lay under 20 eggs a year on average, laying hens have been selectively bred and genetically modified over years and years to produce a lot more, my point was that there's exploration and cruelty towards animals somewhere down the line of the 'perfect' farm PP linked to.
I'd like to add that I'm not a militant vegan that looks down on meat and dairy eaters trying to be responsible and buy ethical choices, I think that's great! I just don't appreciate being told I'm 'spouting nonsense' for stating a fact Smile

IcelandicYoghurt · 19/05/2019 19:15

YANBU and the pps going on about cheese can fuck off unless they are perfect vegans themselves. You are clearly trying your best and doing more than most for animal welfare.

Collaborate · 19/05/2019 19:16

You’re controlling. If positions were reversed there’s be plenty of posters calling out a “red flag”.

I hope you’re not this controlling in other aspects of his life.

Aprillygirl · 19/05/2019 19:18

BogglesGoggles that may be so, but 99% of the time the term 'free range chickens' is totally misleading.

AmeriAnn chicken's suffered for those eggs that you callously binned.

limitedperiodonly · 19/05/2019 19:18

Is he still in your house? If so, I think you should burn him with fire

Molecule · 19/05/2019 19:19

@AmeriAnn that is why I said keep your own hens. All supermarket free-range will come from such places.

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 19:19

@Collaborate we are talking about eggs here 😂😂 red flags indeed!!! God forbid I should have an opinion on the welfare standards of egg production when they are being fed to my kids.

Ridiculous statement!

@IcelandicYoghurt thankyou :)

YABU with the eggs. Do you really think that free range hens are treated that much better? Let DH eat what he wants. I hate eggs after the blood egg incident but my DH sometimes buys the cheap asda eggs for his breakfast.

You don't want caged eggs because it goes against your almost veganism but you still cook meat for others and still eat cheese, if you were that serious you would live without cheese.

Just want to add Hemp and tiger nut milk could be a good alternative as they are close to cows milk.

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 19:23

@cherryblossomgin thanks I'll give the hemp milk a go! I've seen it in the supermarket but not tried it yet.

JemSynergy · 19/05/2019 19:24

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I only buy organic or free range but wouldn't be having an argument over eggs.

Sweetsandcrisps · 19/05/2019 19:26

It’s great that you are thinking about welfare issues but I don’t believe anyone should impose their morals on anyone. There’s nothing worse than someone who is evangelical, because none of us are perfect. There isn’t one type of diet that is more morally superior to another.

I’m veggie but I don’t think my food choices are better than someone who eats meat.

I’m aware of all the millions of animals and insects that are crushed to death by harvesters and killed by traps etc in vegetable/ wheat farming. I’m aware of the of human beings (who are animals too!) badly effected by the almond, cashew, avocado and quinoa industry’s. None of us are perfect, do your best, don’t judge others because we are all partaking in things that have negative consequences.

imonlyatoyspider · 19/05/2019 19:36

Ummmm ❄️ Biscuitalert

GimmeBread · 19/05/2019 19:36

You're getting a hard time here @cricketmum84 but it's hard to adjust to going totally vegan or at least "ethical" but some of the posters on here seem to think that even small changes towards animal welfare are no different from out and out cannabilism!

Some of us aren't lucky enough to benefit from access to ethical food producers and have to do the best with what we have.

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 19:37

@imonlyatoyspider keep your Biscuit it's probably not vegan 😂😂😂

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 19/05/2019 19:39

I can remember as a child going to a farm and seeing “free range” hens 😲 I was horrified

Why not see if you can find a local person who keeps eggs

cricketmum84 · 19/05/2019 19:40

It's funny that my OP was basically my DH didn't follow the list with some additional background info on why I had specified free range eggs and it's turned into a cricketmum bashing over not being vegan enough.
