To roll my eyes when I see hobby...

So many threads were people complain about their partners hobby without mentioning what it is... unless it's some sort of obscure activity where there are few members it's highly unlikely to give you or your partner away!
Also same happens with jobs... just a bloody general idea.... I work in finance, I work in childcare, I teach.... not some nonsense about your "highly pressured environment"

OP posts:
HBStowe · 15/05/2019 15:13

I agree. I expect 90% of them are just cycling twats but I keep myself amused by imagining it’s something genuinely outing and / or wildly embarrassing, like dogging in the Yorkshire dales, or reconstructing famous people’s genitalia out of fimo and auctioning them on eBay.

Sexnotgender · 15/05/2019 15:14

Totally agree.

Just tell us your tedious husband is a cyclist rather than being all coy about his ‘hobby’ as it’s so outing.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 15/05/2019 15:16

DHs favourite hobby is dungeons and dragons, he plays weekly in a measure 🤦🏻‍♀️ I don't always mention it for fear of people thinking I'm married to a massive geek! 😁

Sparklingbrook · 15/05/2019 15:17

Yes, I always assume it's cycling. Grin Or faffing with cars/motorbikes.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 15/05/2019 15:17

In a league

NameChangeNugget · 15/05/2019 15:18

It’s nearly always cycling....

recrudescence · 15/05/2019 15:21

I like the pointlessly veiled descriptions: “I won’t say what the hobby is but think a game played with racquets and a high net. Instead of a ball there is a feathered projectile”.

SuperPixie247 · 15/05/2019 15:23

Anyone who posts a vague "hobby" should automatically expect 128 replies asking what the hobby is 😂

It would be easier to tell in the first place!

PinkHeartLovesCake · 15/05/2019 15:23

It’s always cycling or painting tiny models, it’s never anything exciting or remotely outing yet posters seem to thing if they say the hobby the next door neighbour is going to work out who they are 🙄

Yes to every poster working in a “highly pressured environment” I mean really nobody is going to guess who you are if you say I work in teaching/healthcare etc

Narya · 15/05/2019 15:25

I do that too! I know in my heart it's probably cycling, but it's much funnier to mentally replace 'hobby' with 'dogging' while reading the threads.

LindsayDenton · 15/05/2019 15:26

I always have a little eye roll at ‘high pressured environment’.

BrieAndChilli · 15/05/2019 15:26

really unless there are only about 5 people in the country who do such hobby no randoms on the internet are going to know or care who you are!!
I know at least 30 people off the top of my head who do cycling as a'hobby' and i probably know a load more but just dont know that they cycle!!

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/05/2019 15:32

Has cycling taken over from golf as the hobby du jour of the middle aged middle class man?

I don't think I know many golfers any more, but obviously cycling is very popular. I also randomly wondered the other day if anyone still plays squash?

Tunt · 15/05/2019 15:33

There are now far more threads getting cross at the use of the word hobby than there are people who talk about hobbies. It’s the latest MN witticism.

Lovemusic33 · 15/05/2019 15:33

Cycling or golf usually?

Not sure why it’s so top secret.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/05/2019 15:35

Unfortunately if someone is a cyclist (which is unfortunate in itself) you usually know as they like everyone to know..

However, if my DH was a cyclist, I'd keep it quiet too, i'd rather say that they liked to dog in the Yorkshire dales as that's less embarrassing.

CanBlondesWearMustard · 15/05/2019 15:38

HA! I never ever hear someone use 'hobby' in real life so it always just sounds so twee on here, like I'm reading a story in the People's Friend.

MotherWol · 15/05/2019 15:38

To be fair, any thread which mentions cycling is likely to be derailed by people ranting about how lycra warriors have ruined their village, offended their nan, and should all be shot at dawn. People should just change the details a bit, like if the real hobby's cycling, just say golf/running/whatever. No-one's going to out you based on that.

GlossyTaco · 15/05/2019 15:38

I think it's often gaming too.

NewSchoolNewName · 15/05/2019 15:39

Depends on the hobby though.

If I were to complain about DH spending every other Saturday building Lego models with his friends, it might not be identifying in itself, I’m sure there’s plenty of adult Lego enthusiasts.

But if someone I knew searched my posts, it’d be really identifying when combined with my other posts.

Perhaps I should lie and say DH is a cyclist?

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2019 15:39

I expect 90% of them are just cycling twats

Speak for yourself. My DH is I wish Jason Statham and his hobby is ingesting poison in an underground poison ingesting crime ring. getyarn.io/yarn-clip/429fd959-7767-48fd-9965-5ebd69b5ba2e

Nah it's always cycling, football, something nerdy like models or D&D or posh like rugby or cricket.

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 15/05/2019 15:39

Generally I'd agree but I think it depends whether someone has name changed and what the issue is.

If poster hasn't name changed and by searching you can work out they have 3 kids one aged 3 and twins aged 5, they live in Wythenshawe, the poster works in teaching and the husband has a commute to London twice a week AND then you add in, he does a hobby every sunday morning but next weekend they are all going on away to do his hobby and one of the people going is a hot 21 year old blonde and I think he's going to sleep with her. If you know the poster, you will be able to identify them. Being specific about the hobby (orienteering, triathlon, cycling) may very well narrow it down much more.

On the other hand if you are a name changer and are just complaining generallly about the hobby time/expense, it's daft to be so covert about it unless it is something very obscure in an obscure location (fletcher making in Lower Midsummer)

banivani · 15/05/2019 15:39

Hobby = stamp collecting to me.

DetectiveSantiago · 15/05/2019 15:42

I reckon a lot of it is something really nerdy and the OP just never wants to tell you.

AlaskanOilBaron · 15/05/2019 15:43

It's ALWAYS cycling!

I see these men out in Richmond Park every Sunday, they are insane. Their wives are presumably home dealing with the children.

Hobby = stamp collecting to me.

Totally agree.
