To roll my eyes when I see hobby...

So many threads were people complain about their partners hobby without mentioning what it is... unless it's some sort of obscure activity where there are few members it's highly unlikely to give you or your partner away!
Also same happens with jobs... just a bloody general idea.... I work in finance, I work in childcare, I teach.... not some nonsense about your "highly pressured environment"

OP posts:

I always imagine something dark. Like collecting eyeballs... Or crotchetting with animal skins. Now that's a truly unique and outing thing🤷‍♀️

Highly pressured environment can honestly be even a waiter. 🤷‍♀️

People just have a need to be special I guess.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 15/05/2019 16:25

Am surprised at the number of DHs into tiny toy soldiers.
I thought it was mostly DH.
Yes he is a massive geek.
I'm ok with this, better than him being into football!

TailsoftheManyPaws · 15/05/2019 16:27

Or crotchetting with animal skins

I do know someone whose hobby is stuffing roadkill. Possibly outing?

No, scratch that as I've realised I know TWO people whose hobby is stuffing roadkill, and they live at opposite ends of the country.

You have no idea how many limbs I've hoovered up. Or re located to the wheely bin Grin

grimupnorthLondon · 15/05/2019 16:32

I am super-offended by your comment @Badwifey. In my aisle at work (of which I am the junior shift supervisor (senior when Barry is on holiday)) we stack prosecco and I consider it an extremely high-pressured environment.

DarlingNikita · 15/05/2019 16:34

reconstructing famous people’s genitalia out of fimo and auctioning them on eBay. That's a thing? Grin

hammeringinmyhead · 15/05/2019 16:34

I think sometimes, especially in AIBU, the OP avoids saying what it is because other posters then quite rightly say that X hobby does require weekly timed attendance, like 5 a side in a league or rowing. It's every Saturday morning or never.

TirisfalPumpkin · 15/05/2019 16:35

‘constantly sustaining grievous wounds treading on the stuff.’

I loled. ‘DH, I found your Ork arm. It’s stuck in my foot.’

Topseyt · 15/05/2019 16:36

I agree. It always sounds so twatty. I always laugh at the knots people seem to get tied up in trying not to actually mention these hobbies, jobs etc. by name

My DH likes cycling (fair weather cycling only though). I like walking the dogs and reading. There, that narrows it down to a million or two.

I also don't get the constant angst about being "outed" all the time. I do understand it when someone is in a tricky or sensitive situation or is suffering abuse of some kind, but not wanting to admit that you enjoy everyday stuff such as cycling, golf, reading, walking or swimming is just daft.

NeverSayFreelance · 15/05/2019 16:40

My favourite game is playing Mumsnet FBI trying to work out wtf some people are trying to cover up.

You've just gone into lengthy detail about your DH, DCs, DP, DSIL and some massive scandal yer saying you work in the local library will be the thing that outs you??

I love this website

Am I the only one who lies liberally on different threads?

I think i’ve said I have anywhere between 0-3 children, am a SAHM, part timer or full time WOHP, have a DP, DH or am a single parent... it’s quite liberating, actually!

DP’s hobby is collecting all comic issues that were published on 23rd July 1987. There’s a heated debate raging between the purists that maintain that it has to have been actually published and dated on that date; to the absolute outrageous (and wrong) liberals who think that re-prints are acceptable.

Maybe.

PamelaX · 15/05/2019 16:49

the problem when you change small details is that some bored poster will always pop up to point out that your post doesn't make sense, contradict something you've written earlier and so on. Of course, some made-up details won't make sense ,they are made up but you don't expect a photo of the club do you.

It's easier just to say hobby and keep it vague. No one cares what the hobby is anyway, so why does it matter? 50% of the stories on this forum are complete fabrication anyway.

Marvelendgame · 15/05/2019 16:50

TOTALLY agree

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 15/05/2019 16:53

I expect hobbies to be cycling or gaming. But. I like to pretend they’re English Civil War Re-enactors. Whatever gets you through right.

PamelaX · 15/05/2019 16:53

Dyrne you deserve a medal for honesty!

I haven't , but I have to start now, sound fun. I have boringly just changed details, but when you speak about sacking someone for example, you're better off keeping it vague. It's unlikely they read your post, but all hell would broke lose if they did and recognise themselves.

DownStreet · 15/05/2019 16:54

Highly pressurised environment = submarine

Dyrne · 15/05/2019 16:55

Sometimes the hobby does matter though, or else how are people supposed to give advice? If it is cycling or running, people can suggest the DP does it early mornings or keeps it to 2-3 short cycles a week; and doesn’t enter any sportives or races until the kids are older.

If it’s a team sport that advice doesn’t really work as usually there are set training times and hours; and they have to commit to matches.

horizontalis · 15/05/2019 16:56

My hobby is pretty niche (as in only a thousand or so people in the UK) - and that, combined with a posting history of what the rest of the Horizontalis family gets up to, I'd be totally identifiable to absolutely everyone who knows me.

katseyes7 · 15/05/2019 16:56

My ex husband used to do Aikido. Which l didn't have a problem with.
What l did have a problem with was him prancing round in the back garden (we were on a bus route) in the white 'pyjamas' with a wooden practice sword. l used to hide in the house when he was out there.

PlinkPlink · 15/05/2019 16:58

My ex used to do all that Games Workshop shite.

Fucking ridiculous hobby that cost a ridiculous amount of money whilst he complained that we didnt have enough to get by 🙄 wanker

Lifeover · 15/05/2019 16:59

yes Cycling has taken over from golf here as the main promotion booster hobby/excuse to do sweet fa at home - too many women were taking up golf and infiltrating the golf days so now the blokes have to do stupidly hard cycle races and leave the wife at home to deal with the kids whilst they meet men dressed in tight fitting shorts in country lanes

AlexaAmbidextra · 15/05/2019 17:02

In MN land DH/DPs have hobbies and DCs have activities. Not sure at what age an activity becomes a hobby.
