To think that these passengers should have criminal charges brought

After the tragedy of the Aeroflot flight where 41 people died, it sounds like other passengers stopping to get bags out of overhead lockers might have delayed the evacuation and caused some of the deaths!

AIBU to think that the passengers who deliberately took the time to stop and get bags out of overhead lockers, delaying evacuation of passengers behind while the aircraft was on fire, should have criminal charges brought? They directly caused some deaths!

Obviously, in reality it would be difficult to prove who caused what. However, just talking about bringing charges and making it a criminal offence to retrieve baggage in emergency situations would maybe stop other passengers from doing it next time

I’m not sure I believe in heaven and hell, but there’d be a special place in hell for the type of people that would even consider their bags at a time like that.
I think they should face criminal prosecution. I’d be utterly ashamed if I knew them.

You don’t know how you would behave in a crash. Some people go on auto pilot and retrieving their bag from the overhead locker as they would depart from a plane that landed safely is their way of maintaining calm.

Bloody hell! I haven't done the news this morning but I thought Aeroflot said the evacuation was very quick, 50 odd seconds rather than the more usual 90 seconds...

And I bet other people had lives they wanted to get back to.
Even if the total uphold time of people retrieving luggage case to something small like 15 seconds - imagine the extra people that could have escaped?
Who even THINKS about bags in those circumstances?

You can’t hold people accountable for their behaviour in truly unique, life and death, panic situations.

I think I'd be rubbish in an emergency. When you hear of people who are calm, brave or even get on with their jobs I am always amazed and glad these people are around.

Maybe some people took stuff out of the lockers as they had to wait a short amount of time for those Infront to move out of they way so they could get off the plane. If you had a spare 20 seconds not being able to go anywhere, wouldn't you be tempted to use that time to get a small bag out?

It is really easy to pass judgement with the virtue of hindsight and distance.

It is near impossible to say how you would react in an emergency situation.

I was once caught up in the middle of a terrorist scare in a large London train station a few years ago! Armed police running around, barriers coming down around us to cut off entrances/exits. Everyone freaking out and running around.

I consider myself a practical person. But it was all just a haze. I knew the station very well but still struggled to get out. You don’t think like you normally do. My mind was half on what I was doing and half on what would happen to my family/ crazy thoughts

Admittedly some may have panicked.

Running around, hysteria etc. Of course. I can even half understand why people speed off in panic after hitting someone with their car.
But stopping to get luggage? I struggle.

If someone was delaying me getting off a burning plane I’d punch them out of the way. No excuse for such gormless behaviour

What you’re really saying is your want to legislate against human behaviour in an emergency (not caused by them) I can’t see how that’s in any way appropriate

There is no way people on that plane were thinking logically.

There needs to be some thought put in to working out how to stop it happening in future but it needs to be a system not an accusation as in the extremes we don't have the same thinking and processing.

I prefer to think people were in shock, panicking, not thinking straight and went into auto pilot taking their bags.
I was in a bad car accident on a motorway and climbed back into my car to retrieve my handbag. Years later I still wonder what on Earth I was thinking - but I was just in shock.

Panic is an excuse for this one. People behave in the strangest ways during emergencies. It's very common to behave as though everything is normal hence taking the bags off the plane. It's a well known phenomenon.

I was horrified when I read this. There is no excuse for not following the instructions and getting off that plane. I don't know how someone could live with themselves knowing that getting their bag could well have cost people their lives.

Also a decompression where more than one pax removed their pull down mask to have a spoon on chocolate pudding or a slurp of tea.

When they said that the evacuation was completed in 55 seconds, they mean that whoever didn’t get out by then was burnt to death (ie the last survivor left the plane after 55 seconds).
