Don't want to make this a TAAT, so I'll just say I have enjoyed everyone's observations on the royal family and it's made a boring weekend go much quicker Grin

Please continue if you wish to......

Speaking of flirting and the sailor that KM was making eye love with in precious thread, I also thought I saw some visible steam with this hunk of spunk. Break me of a piece o’ that....

I saw a documentary about Edward and it said that Edward wanted to join Hitler and end the monarchy. Apparently a deal was struck that he could marry Wallis but stay in Britain, under Nazi control. The documentary had photos of him and Walls with Hitler inspecting troops etc, looking happy. I was really shocked.

BertrandRussell · 29/04/2019 08:00

The English upper classes had a fascination with and a sympathy for Hitler that continued in many cases until worryingly close to the declaration of war.

Humpy84 · 29/04/2019 08:04

@ dayswithaY apparently Di thought he was popped off. Apparently it was all cleared up but so odd.

dayswithaY · 29/04/2019 08:07

I'm sure the person whose car crashed into Mannakee's motorbike says she saw a bright light first but might be remembering that wrong.

LaMarschallin · 29/04/2019 08:15

Just piping up to say does anyone remember Kate getting papped in a cab after Mahiki or Boujis with a pack of dunhill blues poking out of her handbag?

Don't remember that but certainly believe it. When she was papped topless there was appropriate outrage about the invasion of privacy but a bit of disapproval about her too as she was smoking at the time.

Ihatehashtags · 29/04/2019 08:18

No, honestly couldn’t care less about them and find it all very dull.

goodbyestranger · 29/04/2019 08:21

Lemonsquinky yes pretty standard in their circle over here; did you see the cute pictures of Her Maj as a child practising the Nazi salute? It was in Germany that the same upper class loathed Hitler and formed a resistance.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/04/2019 08:26

Harry appears to have put his legs on wrong in this picture. Meghan looks lovely of course.

To find the royal family fascinating?
goodbyestranger · 29/04/2019 08:34

And Bert you say 'continued in many cases until worryingly close to the declaration of war' but plenty of sympathy spilled over into the war years. In our village the mum and a son from one of the big houses round the corner were big cheeses in the British Union of Fascists and interned for their trouble. Diana Mitford etc too of course. Not everyone saw the light in Sept 1939.

Hyrana · 29/04/2019 08:34

@ MissParple I'd just pretend I never got it and blame it on some *doddery old retainer. 'I'm afraid poor Mr Miggins is getting a bit forgetful...'

You could not be a Royal ever! You said MR Miggins, all the toffs only use the last name, get with the UC dear girl Smile

OVienna · 29/04/2019 08:35

Mannakee died right up the road from my house (outing.) I couldn't believe it when I followed one of the links.

Re: Diana - I see the conspiracy theories have come up. All of the scenarios are far too complicated - there is no question that the various elements couldn't have been manipulated in the way people describe to produce the end result.

But I understand why they have persisted. I remember about a year after Diana died some aged Duchess (of the non HRH variety) being quoted in a paper as saying the accident was "one solution to a terrible problem." Shock It seems shocking C got his happy ending after all, and she didn't. It is this fundamental injustice that keeps the stories going, IMO.

I wasn't actually a fan of hers but as I said on the other thread - I do think Camilla should be Queen, no special carve outs for the work shy.

LaMarschallin · 29/04/2019 08:39

@Myimaginarycathasfleas

Meghan looks lovely of course

Tsk, Michf! It looks from that photo as though MM may be pregnant. Don't you know that such a lukewarm compliment as "lovely" can be devastating to a women who may be in a delicate condition?
I would have thought that, at least, miraculously beautiful was called for. With a rider about her innate marvellousness shining through.
(Phew! Hope we've dodged that bullet)

SevenSeasofRye · 29/04/2019 08:45

Humpy84 - totally agree with what you say.

OVienna · 29/04/2019 08:46

I'm getting close to mentioning the dreaded 'B' word , with all this talk of the Upper Crusties and their Fascist sympathies...wonder what they'd think about the political views of their descendants.

Succession to the Crown Act 2013 ended the ban on the Royals marrying Catholics.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/04/2019 08:51

@LaMarschallin phew! Thanks for that save! What was I thinking?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/04/2019 08:52

Princess Margaret was utterly dreadful, end of

Indeed Hmm I was once involved in a major Scout/Guide event where she was the guest of honour - she was Chief Guide or something - and absolutely everyone there had a tale to tell of offence she'd caused at previous ones. The leader who showed her round gave a masterclass I'll never forget in how to behave towards someone you detest but are obliged to be polite to

I always think Prince Michael looks so much like the Romanovs

That would be because he has Romanov blood; the late Tsar Nicholas was his grandmother's cousin (and George V actually was his cousin)

Even Philip's related, and when the remains of the murdered Romanov's were believed to have been found, he supplied a DNA sample to help with identification

ElektraLOL · 29/04/2019 08:52

Didn't it take about an hour to get Diana to the hospital or something? That always struck me as odd...

SevenSeasofRye · 29/04/2019 08:58

My OH worked for a while for a very rich woman who was a great friend of PM. She was often invited to the home of this rich woman. PM was appallingly rude and condescending to everyone. There were very many tales of her behaviour. I was due to meet PM at a lunch thrown by her friend to which my OH was invited, but neither or us could go due to illness. I was very relieved.

AllAboutMeAlways · 29/04/2019 09:02

In spite of not knowing where Diana & Dodi would spend the night, or that Henri Paul would later drive them, or what route he would take, or what car he would drive, or whether he’d insist that they put on seatbelts (as he should have done) - MI-6 & Prince Philip still managed to come up with a kick ass assassination plan using a Fiat Uno and a bright light.

Because that’s a sure way to kill someone, right? It’s not like anyone’s ever been in collision with a Fiat Uno and survived the ordeal, is it?

Conspiracy theorists - Dunning-Kruger in action.

AllAboutMeAlways · 29/04/2019 09:06

Really, Elektra?

The woman’s heart had shifted to the other side of her chest & her aorta had ruptured. They needed to stabilise her and this is extremely difficult in a jolting, speeding ambulance.

As it was they had to go very slowly and keep stopping.

But maybe you’re right....Prince Philip must have had the emergency services in on the conspiracy too.

Absurd. Why don’t people try thinking things through?

lookingelsewhere · 29/04/2019 09:09

a long time before that had an affair lasting many years with, I think, someone in publishing

I think it was 7 years. There was a little love-pad in London. The mistress was Sarah Johnson, a publishing assistant at the firm. I believe she was also married. I think she lost her job over the ensuing furore.

Jilly claimed Leo had forgiven her a short fling early in their marriage so they were quits.

lookingelsewhere · 29/04/2019 09:13

did you see the cute pictures of Her Maj as a child practising the Nazi salute?

Oooh yes, I came across those the other day when I was hunting for Royal gossip. There's a short film of it on youTube too. Not sure if the RF ever found out who leaked it from their archives.

ElektraLOL · 29/04/2019 09:16

@AllAboutMeAlways I don't know the specifics of her injuries. How do we know that her heart had shifted from one side of her body to the other?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/04/2019 09:20

Humpy84 great summary upthread, but you missed out the bit about Diana being embalmed without authority. FWIW I'm not keen on conspiracies either, but the excuse that it was done "because of the heat" just doesn't wash ... In a major hospital, of a major city, of a major western nation?

Apologies for the Mail link, but this covers it very well: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-495189/Embalming-Diana-illegal-needed-Paris-heat.html
