Don't want to make this a TAAT, so I'll just say I have enjoyed everyone's observations on the royal family and it's made a boring weekend go much quicker Grin

Please continue if you wish to......

Does anyone say “Thanks, but I’d rather have the money”??

hoteltango · 29/04/2019 19:50

I vote for more, please magic, especially as the thread has branched out into other royal families. There's a heck of a lot of history of Europe tied up with various royal families.

FannyWork · 29/04/2019 19:52

Coinciding with the affair .... grin

It's accompanied by a nice puff piece about their marriage and how happy they are.

I think it’s all probably the other way around from what you’re thinking. Honours lists do not come out of the blue in the royal household and this date would have been in the diary for quite some time along with the wedding anniversary.

I’m pretty sure you’ve got this the wrong way around, I don’t think that the honour has been rushed out to distract from the affair story, if the two are linked it’s most probably the other way around and the affair story was deliberately leaked just before the wedding anniversary and the honour to deliberately take the shine off them. But I’ll say no more, don’t want to get the thread deleted.

*It's like the family order - they all get it eventually.

Camilla got it 7 years after the wedding, Sophie 10 years so 8 years is about right for Kate.

It isn’t the family order because that is a separate order for women, the Royal Family order of Queen Elizabeth II.

They don’t ‘always get around to getting them’. Diana had the QE2 order but never the Victorian one, Fergie was never given either. Princess Michael has never had either too, even though all the other Gloucester/Kent wives have.

It looks like the Queen gave nobody Royal (except Princess Anne) the GVO Dame Grand Cross until after her mother and sister died and that went to Sophie Wessex because she supported her through that time - Sophie actually got hers before Andrew and Edward. It is actually quite a big deal for a royal through marriage to get one as it rubberstamps that you’re regarded as a permanent firm member never expected or likely to leave.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 19:53

Great! It's been an unexpected success and has evolved from salad into a bit of a history lesson Grin

FannyWork I think you're probably right about that, thinking about it.

Is it just me that would hate to be all glammed up in a designer dress and have to ruin it with a fusty old brooch on a big old ribbon?

This article quotes Ed VIII's vile letter re Prince John's death

I didn't say it was the family order. I said it was like the family order in that eventually they all get them.

I had, admittedly, forgotten about Diana not getting it. I assume because the marriage was already in freefall when the timing was around right.

It doesn't really surprise me that Princess Michael hasn't got it. It's a reward for personal service and the relationship between the Queen and Princess Michael has never seemed particularly warm.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 19:57

I also believe Sophie is incredibly close to the Queen which might be why she got hers. I think she's the unofficial favourite from stories I've read in the past.

Surprising Camilla got one after all the drama she's helped cause!

Thank you CadburysTastesVileNow I'll give that a read!

She's the future Queen (debate about titles apart). And I think a lot of the bits and bobs with Camilla have been about showing (or pretending) that the Queen is all good with everything and Camilla is part of the family.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 20:05

I also agree, Fanny, looking at it like that. It obviously wouldn't be a surprise, so the leak is more likely to take the shine off than the award is to distract. I knew it was personal service to the Monarch so knew a few of the rellies wouldn't get it, but didn't realise it was as select as all that. Bet Princess Michael is pissed.

MarkleSparkle · 29/04/2019 20:09

I’ve just been watching a clip where Meghan talks about her wedding dress a bit, I can link if people want to watch. I know people slag her off but I find her so much easier to listen to than Kate. I know it’s awful to compare them but Meghan is so fluent and can seem to talk off the cuff whereas any situation with Kate talking it feels like it’s been carefully set up and she has considered what is ok to say and rehearsed it 3 times. I find it tense to listen to whereas Meghan just feels like she’s chatting. I suppose she’s had experience at that with her job and because Kate is always very careful not to do anything wrong, it’s probably an extension of that too.

EdWinchester · 29/04/2019 20:11

Yes, Kate is very uncomfortable and false sounding.

When she gives a speech, it's agony.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 29/04/2019 20:14

MarkleSparkle

She's definitely more personable than Kate. Being an actress has no doubt helped her speak in public confidently and be engaging.

Saavhi · 29/04/2019 20:17

Kate's accent is beyond ridiculous.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 20:18

Meghan is more used to it, I think.

Sophie is apparently the unofficial favourite and is v close to the Queen. Camilla does a lot of engagements with the Queen now, too. Might have been an acceptance/unity thing?

thenightsky · 29/04/2019 20:21

Kate's accent is beyond ridiculous.

I don't think I've ever heard her speak actually.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 20:22

Meghan is the more confident and articulate public speaker and I'm sure Kate envies her that because in their line of work it's a major asset. Being a jobbing actress and going to 50 auditions during pilot season probably makes you pretty fearless in those kinds of situations. I hate public speaking myself so can sympathise with Kate!

FannyWork · 29/04/2019 20:22

marklesparkle, that’s not surprising though is it? She’s a trained actress who’s done interviews and will have had voice coaching. Of course she’s more at ease with speaking publicly. I can’t say I’ve ever heard Kate speak at all. Going to look her up.

MissParple · 29/04/2019 20:23

Kate has a very cut glass RP accent and sounds more aristo than her husband despite her 'humble' (to some) origins.

goodbyestranger · 29/04/2019 20:25

You don't need to be an actress to sound spontaneous. You just need a little personality and/ or intelligence. Kate appears to have neither, and that's the problem.

Saavhi · 29/04/2019 20:27

Kate speaking to William and Harry:

Butterymuffin · 29/04/2019 20:27

Kate's accent is beyond ridiculous

Nice. I suppose yours is the sweetest sound known to humanity? Give the woman a break. Kate clearly spends much of her time trying to be as publicly acceptable as possible. If her voice isn't the leading part of the package, so what?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/04/2019 20:27

I did public speaking and speech and drama from a young age. That coupled with four years in a front of house job are a huge advantage for meeting and greeting in my current job.

It surprises people when I'm shyer than they initially thought I'd be if I'm "off duty".
