You know, the kind of behaviour only you know about which is unusual, and would make people go Hmm but you love doing?

For example, I binge on three different Netflix programmes at any one time in what I call a "3-2-1" sequence, which goes like this:

  • I will watch a long series (currently Peep Show) 3 episodes at a time
  • then I will watch 2 episodes of a shorter series (Santa Clarita Diet at the mo)
  • I'll then watch one episode of a weekly-type series after that (Jane the Virgin season 5 at the moment)
  • Then it starts with the 3 episodes again, and so on and so forth

I can't deviate from the 3-2-1 sequence, and if for example I've finished the Santa Clarita Diet episodes but the next episode of Jane the Virgin isn't on until 2 day's time, I'll wait to watch anything more until then. I can't just skip it and watch the next 3 Peep Shows, or the world will probably end or something

I don't know why I do this or when it started, but it works for me ConfusedGrin

Please make me feel normal and tell me your secret weird behaviour

Yes to the maladaptive daydreaming (although I never knew it was a particular type of daydreaming) and the pacing to music. I run purely to pace to music as I can't really do it at home now I have a family. I create stories to go with songs too and if one of these songs comes on the car radio I get really angry if anyone interrupts it.
I've just realised that I have spent over 27 years daydreaming about a particular family and their associated friends all of whom I have made up!

Roselinemac · 23/04/2019 21:24

I love this thread, thought it was me just bonkers!

If I touch something with my left hand I have to touch it twice with my right hand, sometimes it takes me ages to get out of the house touching the for handles, light switches etc and I've done this since the age of 5 ish. I'm 45 now.

I always look at the toilet tissue when I've wiped my bum after having a poo BlushBlushBlush

Mammyloveswine · 23/04/2019 21:25

Sometimes i take "candid" photos of myself and imagine myself as a famous person in different scenarios.. eg having cried and with mascara streaming down my face 🙈

I also sing karaoke on youtube but imagine it's my audition for the voice or xfactor... i record it and listen to it back so i can give honest feedback Grin

BeanoBrown · 23/04/2019 21:25

I can't listen to music without daydreaming, I thought that's what everyone done?

When I'm in the house alone I put music on and I live the daydreams, prancing about, walking quickly from room to room playing out whatever scenario is in my head. I've done it since I was a child, I'm off to read up about maladaptive daydreaming....

alittlequinnie · 23/04/2019 21:25

I can't run up the stairs without counting in my head - no matter how hard I try - not 1,2,3,4 though - always 2,4,6,8... don't know why - can't remember a time when I didn't!

I can't eat from the spoon I have just used - so if I mix yoghurt and granola together with a spoon I have to put that spoon in the washing up and then use a new spoon to eat - drives DH mad!

I spend literally hours trying all my cothes on - and if I am going out I have to have an idea of at least 2 complete outfits that I have already organised into piles with underwear/shoes etc .. but literally every single time I am in the house alone - mammoth trying on session.

Finally - I cannot fall asleep without holding on to my ladybits - not caressing or anything just sort of cupping them - even throgh my pj's - luckily most of my sleeping partners have found it endearing!

Raffles1981 · 23/04/2019 21:30

Just for me, I imagine being married to Stephen Mulhearn. We met on BGT and have been together 12 years, married for ten. With three kids (fourth on the way) we are best buddies with Ant & Dec and the public adore us. Blush

GunpowderGelatine · 23/04/2019 21:32

Yes to imagining alternative lives!

I sometimes imagine I'm in a rock band (it doesn't have a name but there's me and 3 Male members) and I imagine my fabulous celebrity life (I stay humble of course ) if a song comes on the radio I think "my band could have sung this one" and I imagine which parts I would sing and what the men would sing my rock band alter-ego May or may not have had love affairs with celebrities including Prince Harry and Leonardo DiCaprio

@SandraDea you're amazing will you be my friend please Grin

I have always managed to put the music on and while away hours daydreaming - whole stories (which usually involve me being young, thin, super talented and having a famous crush be madly in love with me) and repeat while tweaking minor details until it's perfect, clothes, dialogue, dance moves, locations, anything 😬. Used to do it when I was super stressed and needed to switch off, but it would take up too much time as hours will pass before I know it - so now i do it while doing something which requires no real thought (eg cleaning the bathroom)

Heulog · 23/04/2019 21:35

When I'm stressed I play a horrific, awful mental game of 'what would happen if...'. I crashed the car/a plane fell into the house/I lost my leg/arm/face/drowned/ fell asleep and didn't wake up for three years. I'm so glad people around me cannot tell what I am thinking, because people honestly think I'm normal.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 23/04/2019 21:37

I also count steps on stairs and how many steps it takes me to get places in my house. Ten steps to the bathroom from my bed side, 16 steps in my parents stairs etc. I could navigate anywhere in a blackout

GuineaPiglet345 · 23/04/2019 21:38

I read the plot of any book, film or tv series on Wikipedia first otherwise I don’t enjoy it if I don’t know what’s going to happen, it drives DH nuts!

AestheticPerfection · 23/04/2019 21:38

@EjectorCrab I do this all the time, it's a part of how they diagnosed my adhd.

@Roselinemac if you don't check the paper, how do you know how many more wipes you need :)

@alittlequinnie several men I've known do the same, either inside the pyjamas/ boxers, or on top

I have aerophagia. It's undiagnosed because there's no way I'm admitting I do this compulsively, to anyone I ever have to see again. I try hard not to because it can really mess with my insides. But it's particularly bad if I'm trying to diet. Does mean I can make some pretty hefty burps though. I feel ashamed writing it here even though no one knows me.

OogieMcBoogie · 23/04/2019 21:39

I’ve had the same snatch of song going round in my head every waking hour of every day for years - Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant. I haven’t actually heard the song itself for a long long time. I find it gets worse as in very very intrusive when I’m anxious. So odd, I’ve never met anyone with anything similar ( that they will admit to!).

Rememberallball · 23/04/2019 21:39

Mine is particularly weird. Everything is measured in multiples of 6 - so, if I’m counting something I’ll do it in 6’s, 12’s etc. Volume on TV goes up and down by 6 (and always has to be on an even number - DH knows how uncomfortable I feel if it’s on an odd number so does it to wind me up sometimes!!). If I’m cooking things will be cooked in multiples of 6 - meatballs, potatoes, sprouts. I will cut large pies/pizzas/cakes into portions of 6. When counting stitches on my knitting needles even they are counted in 6’s!!

No idea when it started but, unsurprisingly perhaps, I work in feet and inches naturally and am very awkward working in metric amounts!!

I have 4 ‘lives’ that I daydream about....i’m Not the only one??? I also pretend when cooking or doing my make up that I’m doing a YouTube video ‘whisk the eggs together and season...,’ or ..’using a primer is so important...’

ladymalfoy · 23/04/2019 21:41

I count to myself. Swear to myself. At night,in bed I sort of rub my feet together in a strokes way and rub them on the bottom of the quilt. Self soothing I guess.

cricketmum84 · 23/04/2019 21:41

I like to lick oxo cubes Blush

itsamoochicken · 23/04/2019 21:42

The audio volume on anything has to be an even number. Fuck knows why!

YouKnowILoveYou · 23/04/2019 21:42

I can't fall asleep unless I'm imaging a situation. For example I'm getting with whatever celeb I currently fancy Blush

ImTakingTheEssence · 23/04/2019 21:42

Wow namechange i never knew it had a name. I do this on the way to work with my headphones in its normally a film of my life or scenarios i want to happen. I have a bad habit of saying a few lyrics from a song over and over when im by myself.

SachaStark · 23/04/2019 21:43

I put ear phones in, select my YouTube music mix, and will spend an hour at a time miming along to the song as though it is me singing.

I can’t sing at all IRL! So I guess this is the closest I will ever come to being an incredible songstress.

Aimily · 23/04/2019 21:43

I like to pretend I'm in music videos.
Cleaning the kitchen
Walking down the street
In the gym

I'm the artist of the song I'm listening to and my day to day action is the music video

m4rdybum · 23/04/2019 21:44

@Smuddgle I do the hand flapping thing too!

TurboTeddy · 23/04/2019 21:44

I serenade the dog and dance with him. He's severely disadvantaged by four left paws.
