To wonder what exactly middle class and upper class Mums do to be skinny

I am a Mum of a two year old turning three July. Not an age that he can be packed up for long walks in buggy.

I have gained weight and feeling overwhelmed by everything.

I have noticed and I think it is obvious that middle and upper class Mums tend to be slimmer.

I want to know if you identify this and if so what is your weekly shopping routine, meal plan, how do you exercise with or without toddler/s, tips and tricks etc, diet plans, etc etc.

Fact is, I couldn't give a shit if people think my diet is boring.

The same diet would be classed as 'clean' and there'd be a blog about it. Or paleo, or low carb or whatever.

The same diet would be classed as 'traditional' and there'd be a book about it from the 60's.

Point is that it works for me, keeps me a healthy weight and keeps me feeling good. And I wear the clothes that I like.

These comments suggest more than a just overweight:

I lost stones and then slowly gained them back every time, plus a little more. I finally realized that my body just wants to be bigger

I will never win a war with my own body.

There is a huge weight range within the healthy weight category of BMI, more than enough to stay within the boundaries.

This is one of the main attitudes to change - it's not punishing yourself to lose weight by hearing healthily to achieve a healthy weight. It's looking after yourself, treating yourself and giving yourself the best.
Once you can make that mental association then you end up with a different take on food.
Not saying it's easy to do.

If it is genetics, how come it is a recent thing. I often watch old cheesy movies dirty dancing, mannequin, there are very few if no obese people in them.

How many obese people do you see in today's movies?

I think it is a recent thing however- previous generations were more active and probably ate less.

Movies are no indication of course thin today and thin in the 70s and earlier bar the odd supposedly overweight character, moreso today I imagine

It’s easy or hard to very hard for some for a range of reasons but if you’re within the bmi healthy range then it’s fine - that’s all really to it

Ellenmp its clear why you kept gaining weight each time. Each time you went on a 'diet' you massively resitricted calories that you lose not only fat but muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn. Your basal metabolic rate would be low, especially if sedentary. So when you stop said fad diet and go back to previous way of eating it piles back on quickly and more. Eating healthy and consistently like you are now is the right way to go and results will come in time.

Sometimes it genuinely is just luck of the genes. I eat as much as my 6'3 rugby playing husband but am blessed with a very fast metabolism so do not look as I deserve to!

Being slim is largely a matter of genetic luck. All of the mums on hear claiming thy stay slim by skipping breakfast or busy busier than thou are deluding themselves into believing their metabolic luck is some sort of personal virtue
This is wrong, patronising and annoying. I don't have an issue in saying that genes play a part in people's natural weight but to imply that genes is what us making you fay and there's nothing you can do about it is being in denial, nothing else.

As to say that it is just a bit of extra on yiyr body, again, this is just total denial to all the medical fsct that obesity is the biggest killer and what cist the NHS the most.

I don't judge people who are fat. There are many reasons why people are in the first place and why they can't lose the weight. It's hard, and harder for some. But to try to make yourself feel good bu telling yourself that it's not your fault if you're fat, that it doesn't t matter and that skinny people are just lucky is just lying to yourself.

Formerbabe, I used to a good stone slimmer even 5 years ago, cause I'm quite a small frame this weight is quite heavy for me. Everyone is so different. I am seen women on here type that they are the same height and dress size as me, whereas their weight puts them as overweight.

Most women who are middle-aged and slim are working for it... hard.

If you do not mind being fat, fill your boots but don't make your excuses mine.

Yup, because being diabetic is so much fun than being healthy.

The use of the word 'punishing' says more about the poster than anything else.

I think this thread is kind of missing the point - you don't have to do anything to lose weight.

There's no need to change your diet at all if its working for you, its what you enjoy eating, and what you can afford, you just need to eat less of it.

This is obviously cheaper, as you will need to buy less food, plus it will be cheaper and easier to cook.

Its just a lot easier to spend time, energy and money researching and buying 'healthy' food. Reducing portion size is hard, and requires willpower so people will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid it...

Yup. I do that. I eat really healthily, I'm energetic, healthy and look younger than I am. I'm also a stone overweight. I really don't think it's worth running miles every day and not ever eating cake over.

It's the 800 cals a day and constant running that seems insane. Particularly as it's just one guy who is always the media bleating on about it. Yes, if you are ill- diabetic - but for normal people - just no.

Poverty and weight are absolutely related. But mainly I think because things that cause you to be poor also cause you to be fat.

So things like disability, poor mental health, poor impulse control, a troubled upbringing, issues with addiction, poor self esteem.

I think giving your kid a healthy example is a massive thing. I spent a lot of time banging on about healthy eating when my kids were small. DH does a lot of exercise (me less so because I am disabled). Our young adult kids are absolute paragons of healthy living, eating well and exercising regularly, far more than we were in our early twenties. I’m surprised to be honest how much they’ve taken it all on board.
