Oooh MN I've ballsed up big time. Have arrived at AirBnB in Fuertaventura after eighty years of travelling and the place in basically in the middle of nowhere with loads of massive hotel complexes but virtually no other life to be seen. We walked for about an hour and found a pizza place where they're showing some trans-universe football final with locals roaring at the telly. Now full of pizza and chugging beer but I feel like a total git for not choosing the accommodation more carefully. DP is prentending he's having a great time. Help - give me your stories!

Went to Greece on a super chap holiday. Terrible 2 star accolodation but didn’t think it would matter as we would be outside all the time.

Rained. Very cold. Awful.

Came home a week early.

runninguphills · 13/02/2019 22:11

We had a camping holiday in France. We had a lovely bbq the first night but it started to pour down with rain so had to get in the tent.

The rain became torrential and within 2 hours one of the children started projectile vomiting, then the next and the third.

3 vomiting children. We had no clean bedding left, it was dark and pissing down with rain. My husband then started being violently sick too.

It lasted 48 hours, 3 very unwell puking 2,5 and 7 year old. My husband was so unwell he sounded like me in labour as the stomach cramps were so awful. The campsite had turned into a bog and the relentless rain persisted. We were stuck in the middle of nowhere so phone signal or WiFi to try and book alternative accommodation.

I was looking after them all.

Worst holiday ever

Greece also. The company changed our hotel while we were on the plane so we didn’t get the message, turned up at our original hotel to find it closed. had to then travel to the new hotel which was the complete opposite of what we had booked. Food inedible, room above the kitchen so we could constantly smell the inedible food. Hotel was down a dust track in the middle of nowhere with only a dodgy little shop accessible on foot (we ended up buying random snacks and wine there and having them on the balcony of our hotel as the food was so bad).

Never been back to Greece which is a shame as it looked lovely but I think I’m scarred!

Also the man in charge of the Airbnb repeatedly sent me the wrong code to the key box and sent me increasingly frustrated whatsapps with the same code implying I was thick for not being able to work it. Was the wrong code. Stray cat was staring at me in a very judgemental fashion.

Can’t you find alternative accommodation, OP? That sounds grim Sad

Thisnamechanger · 13/02/2019 22:23

Have suggested this repeatedly to DP. We will go for a drive tomorrow and if it is as quiet as suspected I will just book something in the place he's been before which he says is more lively.

Greece for us too. We had booked a brand new hotel which didn’t open in time for our holiday so we ended up in a flea pit of a hotel.

The glass window was smashed in the bathroom and mosquitoes came in. We had to sleep with our arms and legs out of the bed to avoid being bitten on the face!

cricketmum84 · 13/02/2019 22:26

We stayed in a lovely one in Spain. Unfortunately it was massively haunted. I woke up to a face staring at me on the pillow next to me at one point. Never been as happy to come home Grin

Thisnamechanger · 13/02/2019 22:26

hoping a shag fest will cheer things up

Also there's no coffee in the apartment. What Savage runs this place.

Oh my goodness running. You win the thread surely? That's my worst nightmare, camping and puking.

Thisimmortalcurl · 13/02/2019 22:33

The dunes are beautiful ,it’s a nice island to drive about and if you are into water sports it’s the place to be .
Shame your accommodation is shit though

Teletext holiday to Spain with my best friend many years ago. We booked thinking "what a bargain!" before realising that it was by coach and ferry not flying Shock

Figured we would get tipsy on ferry and sleep through France. Errrrr no. Swapped from lovely luxury coach at Watford services to an old banger with dodgy seats. Not enough time on ferry to get tipsy. Coach full of kids and their parents (we were about 18) and some of the parents seemed to think they could send their darlings to play with us/show us their games/ whatever.

Arrive at hotel sober but determined to enjoy ourselves. Room seems ok until we throw the curtains wide to find our balcony is pitch black because there's a brick wall an inch in front of it.

Ended up lying on the bed with our legs up the wall ( both had REALLY bad swollen cankles from the journey) sipping Sangria by straw.

Not going to lie though after all that we still had a brilliant time Grin

Thisimmortalcurl · 13/02/2019 22:36

Corralejo is the nicest and yeah a bit more lively.

My 22nd birthday - lovely weekend in Brittany planned.
Only after getting off the ferry at Calais DP sees a road sign for Paris and has the great romantic idea of driving there instead. Took fucking ages and when we got there we realised a huge event was on and we just couldn’t find a hotel. Ended up in the shittiest room I’ve ever stayed in, like an attic with a tiny boxy window over a dodgy courtyard. It stank of weed and wee. Got massively ripped off with parking and by the time we parked, checked in, changed and went out, we couldn’t find any dinner either. Pissing down with rain as well. We were both frustrated after a long shit day and probably too much wine as well, so we had a pointless argument, slept fully clothed at different ends of the bed. Woke up next day with the hump, made up, decided we both hated Paris and set off back home. Car broke down on motorway, had to be towed to some random garage in the middle of a village. Got even more massively ripped off by a taxi driver who took us to the Calais ferry. He actually stopped half way and demanded 100 euros more than initially agreed, threatening to leave us there if we don’t pay. By this point our phones were dead. We never recovered the car.
It’s mildly funny now looking back !!!

TheCanyon · 13/02/2019 22:39

Those canaries aint what they're cracked up to be -that cunting cold evening wind-- we also had at least a mile walk with two 3 year olds to find people nevermind food, fun times!

Off to the middle east tomorrow, I suspect ill look at gran canaria as an amazing holiday afterwards...

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 13/02/2019 22:42

First year with a caravan not tent, invited a family with a trailer tent to join us. We arrived with full week's shop.
The dw gets out of the car carrying a cooked chicken.

Fuck all else.
It rained all week.
Guess who hosted??
Same family we took their ds abroad. His first time, all it cost them was his passport.
No appreciation /thanks. Just that their dd would have a lovely camping trip now without her db!!

planesinthesky · 13/02/2019 22:47

Whereabouts in Fuerteventura?

Thisnamechanger · 13/02/2019 22:53

if you are into water sports it’s the place to be

Am praying this will make up for it given we've lugged about a million kilos of windsurfing gear with us Grin

Self catering in Brittany, selection of sc houses, we had the old vicarage with church and grave yard next door (that was the good bit). It was decent weather (t-shirt) but still freezing cold inside. Kitchen was a bit Hm, but manageable.

The day before we left we managed to tangle up the additional blankets from the cupboard (did I say it was freezing?) and could go back to sleep as we were coughing and sneezing thanks to the dust bunnies emerging. We left around 4am to drive home.

The next year a colleague came across the same property and I strongly recommended to her looking elsewhere.

Holiday in cranky camper van in France with 2x3 yr old Dt's and 5yr old ds1. Clutch of van fell apart in heavy traffic on day 1....First night spent on sofa in foyer of garage we got towed to, much of rest of holiday in tent as camper in garage and it rained torrentially for 10 days out of 14. All holiday pics show us mainly in campsite laundrettes trying to dry clothes.

Went to Malta, with my in-laws, for 2 whole weeks. Surely I don’t need to say more! Grin

Tillygetsit · 13/02/2019 23:03

Paris. Ramshackle hotel. When we got there I was bursting for the loo. It was at the top of the stairs facing them. Sat down in relief...door freaked, came off it's hinges and slid down the stairs towards OH! Don't know who was more shocked.
