From Bette Davis, who was too canny to name names. Smile

A new low. Trump references genocide - the ‘trail of tears’. Not an accident.

Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President. Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!

adrienneJ · 10/02/2019 02:37

What a mountain out of a molehill about the shutdown, everythings still running, bins being emptied, homes heated, if anything its just proven how bloated the government is with bureaucracy that it can go for so long and still function fine with so many 'essential' workers off. Trump did promise to filter unneeded bureaucracy so.......

OK his reteric and what he says is garbage but when it boils down to it and comes to the crunch his policies have in general been quite good and have worked. He's just not very good at putting it into words.

He's also good at not rising to stupid demands like minimum wage, something that our government brings about as a 'good thing' to make it look like theyre doing something.

TheClaws · 10/02/2019 05:40

adrienne You would be totally OK going without pay for a month or more? (And not being able to borrow extra to get you through, as you have no job certainty, etc.). And then living with the threat of it happening again in the next month or so?

TheClaws · 10/02/2019 05:41

Sorry, did you say minimum wage is a stupid demand?

TheNorthWestPawsage · 10/02/2019 07:17

adrienne many federal employees weren't sitting at home picking fluff out of their navels - they were still required to turn up to their jobs and work WITHOUT pay!

The comment about minimum wage is just puerile.

PerkingFaintly · 10/02/2019 07:56

Yep, the country was working really well.

That's why Trump caved and has at least temporarily ended the shutdown, suffering a humiliating defeat.

He did that because the country was working great without federal employees.

He also ordered many federal employees to turn up at work unpaid, because the country was working really well without them.

PerkingFaintly · 10/02/2019 07:57

National parks workers – just enough to reopen hunting. Air safety workers, so he and his mates could continue to fly.

Can't remember whether he ordered tax employees back to work so he and his mates could have their rebates, but certainly US farmers were left struggling without rebates and payments.

The FBI was running out of money for enforcing law and order. Of course that's a bonus if your last name is Trump.

Those are just a few examples where the impact was visible immediately. Doesn't begin to count the long term effects.

Roussette · 10/02/2019 08:29

I presume adrienne had been on the sauce when she posted that. I doubt the person who lives pay packet to pay packet and had to pawn her wedding ring to survive would agree with your view... The shutdown cost the US more or less the amount Trump demands for his stupid wall... but move along, it's not a problem Hmm
As for the MW comment, I'll just leave that to speak for itself!

Coming up to a year since the Parkland shootings.

From Columbine to Parkland: how we got the story wrong on mass shootings
After Columbine, Dave Cullen swore he would never write about a mass shooting again. But over the next 20 years, he realised that he and other journalists had a duty to destroy the deadly myths they had helped create

If only a tiny bit of this is provable it explains a lot (and for the older MNetters there's an interesting throw back to good old Robert Maxwell)

Let’s talk about organized crime. Because it's not just Jared & Junior we’re up against here.

And SotUA or Bezo's pecker?

It's SNL, the comedic echo chamber.

lionheart · 10/02/2019 12:37

My goodness TheNorthWestPawsage. That was somewhat disheartening, at least until the end.

Judge Jeanine and the NRA’s Dana go for a smear job. Honestly, this is awful.

Kamala Harris is a lot of things—a senator, a candidate for president, a former prosecutor but @DLoesch joined me to say that is also a threat to your freedom. Take a look at what she had to say:

He’s on about weather and global warming again, and yet only executive time embarrasses him.

His base undererstands laziness. Other matters, they don't.............
