To think you don’t bloody sneeze in public?Probably get flamed for this but I absolutely detest people sneezing openly in public. It spreads germs and it’s NOT THAT HARD to internally sneeze as in like hold yourself back when you sneeze!

What about you hygiene pet peeves?

Another one is LICKING THE SUPERMARKET BAGS....why?! Why would I want you to slurp on your finger and then use your saliva to lubricate my bag and then continue to put my fresh produce into said bag. EW EW EW.

PS. Don’t say people can’t help sneezing, because unless you are challenged in someway , you ABSOLUTELY can.

How to do internal sneezes - you hold your nose tight and pinch your nostrils when the sneeze arrives. That way the sneeze happens but stays in your nose. Doesn't work if your nose is already dripping because obviously you have to touch your nose and the drip will go on your hand. But if you have a dry nose to the touch, then it will be a dry sneeze.

It's not nearly as satisfying as sneezing outwardly but it's a lot more polite if you don't have a clean tissue to sneeze into and you are near other people.

I don't like people who cough with their mouths wide open and uncovered. Just coughing into the air next to you, like in a queue or something. If that happens next to me I try and hold my breath to allow the germs to dissipate a bit (hopeless I know).

On the other hand I rarely, rarely get colds so maybe it does work?!

I also wash my hands after coming back from shopping especially. Supermarket trolley handles, cash points, card reader pads - urrrrrrgh. The amount of germs on those.

FuriousFifties · 12/01/2019 19:24

I sneeze... I sneeze a lot, 10-15 in a row is normal for me. It's shit but people like you op really put the cherry on the shitness. I can't help it for medical reasons far too numerous to bore you with. Challenged in some way am I? Fuck off to the far side of fuck.

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 19:31

i was looking at the local paper in my newsagent, and licking my finger while turning the pages, as you do, and the woman behind the counter told me off, was that you op?

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 12/01/2019 19:31

Your post actually makes me think of an abusive ex that I had. He hated the way I sneezed. Although I covered my sneezes, I sneezed very loudly. He decided that was not lady-like and demanded that I sneeze internally or make little sneezes like a mouse.

Thankfully, I am well rid of that narcissistic asshole and toxic relationship and my DH encourages me to sneeze loudly and in all it's glory.

I suspect that you sneeze this way for the same abusive reasons. Either a parent or guardian or partner has led you to believe that it is not ladylike( cleverly disguised as hygiene) to sneeze naturally as a human being. As it has been noted before, it is unnatural to sneeze your way and can cause damage.

In regards to the bags- next time bring your own. Wink

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 19:32

no wonder there are superbugs antibiotic resistant, are you sure that cotton wool you have wrapped yourself up in is hygienic?
just wash your hands before eating and cooking.

you will be fine!

delboysskinandblister · 12/01/2019 19:35

The best for hiccups is anal massage.

Really: www.newscientist.com/article/dn10207-ig-nobel-prizes-hail-digital-rectal-massage/

and just how did you discover this..?

Angelicwings · 12/01/2019 19:55

Furious but you are surely well prepared with tissues if you sneeze a lot? That captures a lot of the spray from sneezes. I think OP or most like her would just like there not to be a lot of spray floating around from an open sneeze especially if that person has a bad cold rather than just an allergic reaction to something (say). Spray can be negated by using a tissue to sneeze into.

SoyDora · 12/01/2019 19:57

I tell you what's worse and can't believe people accept it- ice cream van vendors taking your money in the same ungloved hand that they hold your cone with. The same cone you will eat. YUK!
Always get a lolly for that reason

I’ve eaten a lot of ice cream cones and haven’t died from one yet, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Latteaday123 · 12/01/2019 20:00

What I find absolutely vile is bad breath. That kind of rotten smell repels me so badly.

Flowerpower220394 · 12/01/2019 20:01

As human beings we cannot control sneezing, it's a involuntary thing like farting. Ideally people should sneeze into a tissue however that is not always possible and we are caught short. It's not good for you to hold in a sneeze or a fart. Germs are everywhere, everyone has them whether they admit to it or not and people will get poorly but that's life.

RomanyRoots · 12/01/2019 20:11

Sometimes I can suppress a sneeze, other times not.
I put my hand over my mouth, and make sure I wipe it afterwards, I carry tissues, wipes or hand san.
You have issues, everyone sneezes.

FuriousFifties · 12/01/2019 20:14

Angelic yes I have tissues but if caught short have been known to rush to the tissue isle, grab a box, open it, sneeze, purchase boxBlush

11 years on mn and this has pushed me over the edge, challenged ffs.

OKhitmewithit · 12/01/2019 20:15

God when I sneeze I nearly blow my head off, if I tried to hold it in I'd likely rupture something vital

Lovemusic33 · 12/01/2019 20:20

I can’t hold a sneeze in, I’m really talented because I can sneeze and fart at the same time 🤣🤣

I didn’t know people could control sneezes, is it really a thing?

mathanxiety · 12/01/2019 20:25

As long as people put their hand up to cover their nose mouth it's fine.

EWwwww.

You sneeze into your hand and then touch a door handle with the hand and then what?

Raise your arm across your face and sneeze into your elbow, people.

Mummadeeze · 12/01/2019 20:27

Ridiculous OP, sorry. Sneezing is part of a lot of people’s daily life. Not through choice. Get over it.

SoyDora · 12/01/2019 20:30

I’m interested in the ‘challenged’ thing. I can’t hold in a sneeze, who should I be seeing about getting my issues diagnosed? What is the treatment? Should I be going to the GP? A behavioural therapist?

FuriousFifties · 12/01/2019 20:33

Sometimes I can stop a sneeze if I press with a finger just under my nose, don't know why that works but it does.

But the ultimate art is to sneeze with your eyes open whilst driving. Try it, nigh on impossible to keep your eyes open but I have to or I'd crash!

Devilinatwinset · 12/01/2019 20:39

I love sneezing. It's very satisfying. I hate it when I lose a sneeze so no way would I 'internalise' it. Yanbu to expect people not to sneeze all over the place rather than into a tissue but yabu to expect people to keep it in.

manicmij · 12/01/2019 20:42

I must be challenged then as to internally sneeze it means running the risk of the pressure coming through my nose which to me would be worse for folk. If out in public and needing to sneeze I sneeze into my bent arm (elbow space) hence catching any germs.

Catsinthecupboard · 12/01/2019 20:55

OP, I've never said this to anyone on line but you're ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!!!

You can damage yourself if you hold in sneezes. I have had them that i couldn't control on my life.

I am not rtft bc i have a bad chest cold but i hope a few people have told you that you're "unreasonable" with better words.

I hope you encounter a few sneezes this weekend as you're so unsympathetic and wishing people harm to protect yourself.

YourMateMima · 12/01/2019 21:08

I’d definitely piss myself if I did an internal sneeze.

PCPlumsTruncheon · 12/01/2019 21:35

m.youtube.com/watch?v=1jPq-Od46Pg

Does this meet with your approval OP?
I agree that there are certain topics where Mumsnet and the real world part company and hygiene/germs is definitely one of them eg people who boil wash towels after every use and change their underwear 5 times a day.
AnyFucker the groove between your nose and upper lip is called the philtrum. I have been desperate to impart this fact to someone since I learned it but it never seemed to crop up in conversation Smile

lifebeginsat16 · 12/01/2019 22:20

Husband just stifled a sneeze and has been in agony for a week as it put his back out :/

Tishty · 12/01/2019 22:20

I’m totally with you! I can definitely hold a sneeze in or do it without the big ahblahhhh my husband makes a right song and dance and sneezes so gratuitously in public I can’t stand it! Yuk yes keep your sneezes in! Actually I’ve been known to sneeze down my own top if I have a cold and am in company!
