To think you don’t bloody sneeze in public?Probably get flamed for this but I absolutely detest people sneezing openly in public. It spreads germs and it’s NOT THAT HARD to internally sneeze as in like hold yourself back when you sneeze!

What about you hygiene pet peeves?

Another one is LICKING THE SUPERMARKET BAGS....why?! Why would I want you to slurp on your finger and then use your saliva to lubricate my bag and then continue to put my fresh produce into said bag. EW EW EW.

PS. Don’t say people can’t help sneezing, because unless you are challenged in someway , you ABSOLUTELY can.

Someone else handles my bag when I forget to bring my reusable one from home.

OR if I’m in a random place and purchase something that requires bagging. I’m not saying everywhere does it - it is quite rare and some supermarkets have those little wet pads to use instead. And YES, you can probably argue they contain more germs than someone’s saliva but it’s just the thought! Shock

Re the internal sneezing, I’ve always been able to do it and suffer myself from dust pollen birch etc etc allergy and have a mast cell disorder but I still refuse to sneeze out loud in public - I find it a bit yuck.

This thread just proves that people don’t care and are generally pretty gross

Well, it does demonstrate that what you see as acceptable is not aligned with what people in general see as acceptable. So either everyone else is gross, or you have some germphobia issues.

BejamNostalgia · 12/01/2019 10:54

People who stifle sneezes are haram.

Is that true? How interesting.

LoniceraJaponica · 12/01/2019 11:40

thecatsthecats

There are two schools of thought on this. If you blow too hard it can spread the infection into your ears. The advice is to blow out of one nostril at a time. Sniffing can transport the mucous to the back of the throat and irritate it, thus causing a cough,

This article explains it very well.

Roussette · 12/01/2019 12:41

I never knew saliva was equivalent to Novichok, I wish someone had told me! It wouldn't worry me one jot if someone did that to open a bag. It's hardly life threatening is it?

And now blowing your nose is vile??? Shock Would you prefer dripping noses everywhere?

When I had sinisitus, my Doctor told me to blow my nose rather than sniffing mucus back into my head.

I cease to be amazed at some of the opinions on MN, really.

Lisabel as I said above, I'm immunosupressed and rarely leave the house yet I have the dreaded lurgy doing the rounds. With illnesses I just have to make sure hand washing hygiene is good. I take responsibility for my own health and can't blame others if I become unwell.

Sorry to hear that, that must be awful.

I think that there should be an element of shared responsibility though- even if it's just everyone practising good hygiene and bearing in mind that "coughs and sneezes spread diseases" and therefore using tissues to cover their faces.

One of my friends has a kid with cystic fibrosis who is in school in Sweden. They are brilliant about making sure that the kids in his school practise good hygiene so as a result he does not get ill as often as he did when he was living in the UK where some people have inverse pride about not being hygienic- even if that has severe consequences for other people.

Roussette · 12/01/2019 12:44

^^ This.

As I've said many a time on MN, luckily no one I know personally is like this. They're not like it about having to answer the doorbell, texting before you know someone is up, boil washing your sheets and/or towels every day, and now sneezing Grin

csigeek · 12/01/2019 17:25

“trapped pressure can be the reason that holding in a sneeze can be dangerous. For one, your ears can be at risk. The pressure of holding in a sneeze can also cause you to pop a small blood vessel in your eye, nose, or eardrum.”

Minidollop · 12/01/2019 17:29

Clearly I'm challenged. I've never been able to stop a sneeze and yes, I've tried.

As for my husband who has serious nasal issues (failed op to widen nasal passage amongst others), I would imagine that attempting to 'internally sneeze' could cause further harm.
I do however keep a tissue on me to sneeze into.

MsLexic · 12/01/2019 17:36

If I internally sneezed I would wee like a horse in a ford probably.Make a big puddle of germs no doubt.
I have never ever had ANYONE lick a plastic bag...

Annaram1 · 12/01/2019 17:36

I once read that the average sneeze has a speed of 100 miles per hour. Keeping that in cannot be good for you. Just sneeze into a tissue which should then be put down the loo as soon as possible. Where is the problem? Just always carry some tissues with you as I do.

Yulebealrite · 12/01/2019 17:38

I'll always put my hand over my mouth but I can't stifle a sneeze like you suggest. And yes I've had to loudly sneeze in embarrassing situations where I tried really hard to make as little noise as possible.

Have you ever thought that people are built differently and not everyone is the same as you? Strange concept that!

ArwenEdwards · 12/01/2019 17:39

I've had inner ear problems all my life. If I try to close my mouth and sneeze into myself (internal sneeze) my ears pop and it can cause infection. I think you are being unreasonable to be honest to say people can prevent a sneeze completely. I think people who sneeze loudly and do not protect their mouth/nasal area (especially in public) are very annoying though. It's just common courtesy and basic good manners to cover your mouth! Same with a big, loud yawn.

The plastic bag licking to separate the bags is avoidable. In post offices, for example, they use a rubber finger mitten with a small bit of water to separate money. The same tactic should be applied to the handling of grocery bags.

masterandmargarita · 12/01/2019 17:39

So the quran's got a rule about stifled sneezes!?

Doodlesplodge17 · 12/01/2019 17:42

Get a grip 😂😂 internally sneezing is absolutely fine as long as you want to:
A. Possibly piss yourself unless you’re a total ninja and can cross your legs quick smart as an involuntary sneeze happens!
B. Make your ears pop - pet hate 😕
Or
C. Put unnecessary pressure on your poor brain!

I’ll stick to sneezing down my cleavage under whatever top I’m wearing thank you very much!

Yulebealrite · 12/01/2019 17:45

I once read that the average sneeze has a speed of 100 miles per hour.

Average is the key word here

So some people like the op have little slow sneezes with a top speed of say 70mph and others will have high speed upward of 130mph.

As with the ads with the car dummy, the slow sneeze stops more easily with less collateral damage, than the mega sneeze.

Member869894 · 12/01/2019 17:46

if you press the inside corners of your eyes with your fingers when you want to sneeze the urge to sneeze disappears - try it; it workS!!

AllMYSmellySocks · 12/01/2019 17:47

I never knew saliva was equivalent to Novichok

This. I'm surprised people manage to leave the house at all!

Lousummer · 12/01/2019 17:56
  1. internal sneezing? No I’m not popping my ears and giving myself brain injuries by not sneezing. However I must say I do hate it when people sneeze into the crook of their arms trying to be more hygienic when actually you can throw a tissue or simply wash your hands. You can’t wash your jumper arm so easily !
  2. pack your own bag for life bags? Surely?
lily2403 · 12/01/2019 18:00

I won’t hold my sneeze as it’s sore if I try, what I will do Is sneeze into a tissue or into my arm

BadlyAgedMemes · 12/01/2019 18:01

I kind of wish I could sneeze like normal people! I think I was taught from early on it was the thing to do, and started holding my nose every time I felt a sneeze coming.

Now I can't sneeze without holding my nose.

If both my hands are busy, and a sneeze just can't be stopped, it feels like it goes in rather than out, and like my head is exploding.

So I sneeze quietly and end up with snotty hands if I don't have time to reach for a tissue beforehand. (Don't worry, I always have plenty of hand sanitiser in my gigantic bag of Things You Might Need.)

DeaflySilence · 12/01/2019 18:01

"I’m not angry I’m just sick of travelling on the tube etc with people sharing their germs!"

Why don't you wear a mask when you're travelling, @Amimissingsomethinghere?

macnab · 12/01/2019 18:03

I've not read the whole thread but just wanted to warn of the danger of holding in a sneeze. A couple of years ago a work colleague did just that and it collapsed his lung Shock he was quite ill in hospital for a few days. I'd never heard of this until then and often held a sneeze in when in company etc - now I just sneeze into a tissue or my elbow joint and excuse myself!

SherlockHolmes · 12/01/2019 18:05

Don't be so neurotic. FFS.

HippyMama90 · 12/01/2019 18:08

Take a reusable shopping bag when you do your shopping, bag 'licking' solved.

As for the sneezing, if someone is openly sneezing in your face yea that's rude. Lots of people can't 'internally' sneeze. I for one can't after an emergency csection and being cut too far my right stomach muscles can take it!, does that mean I'm challenged? Hmm
