Shutdowns, military pullouts, and resignations: it’s Christmas and Trump thread 89

It’s chaos in Trump’s world, more so than usual, with #TrumpResign trending in Twitter after a number of key debacles: the pull-out of US troops from Syria, the resignation of General Jim Mattis, and the shutdown of the government over Christmas due to bipartisan disagreement over wall funding. (Those are just 3 issues.) The next few weeks will be rocky.

We see Trump’s insults every day and get numb to them. But when they’re collected like this by the New York Times, you really see the unprecedented scope of his anti-media tirades. twitter.com/BillAdairDuke/status/1079394834270642176/photo/1

TheNorthWestPawsage, yes, that cyber-attack on newspaper printing facilities is extremely worrying.

If anything, it looks to me like a dry-run. A test of capabilities.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/12/2018 17:35

If you can't read the NYT page (I can't, it's too small) there is a list at www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/01/28/upshot/donald-trump-twitter-insults.html

time.com/5490169/paul-manafort-victor-boyarkin-debts/

'The former Russian intelligence officer says he has been approached by the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. Boyarkin’s response to those investigators? “I told them to go dig a ditch,” he says. Peter Carr, the spokesman for the Special Counsel’s Office, declined to comment. Through his spokesman, Manafort likewise declined to comment on his alleged connections with Boyarkin.

But those connections could be potentially important to the Special Counsel’s inquiry. They would mark some of the clearest evidence of the leverage that powerful Russians had over Trump’s campaign chairman. And they may shed light on why Manafort discussed going right back to work for pro-Russian interests in Eastern Europe after he crashed out of the Trump campaign in August 2016, according to numerous sources in the TIME investigation.'

I started to peruse that 'insult list' and got so pissed off and upset by about the fourth entry that I had to close it!

Fuck him and the horse he rode in on!!!

Interesting thread about Trump's lies and their impact on the media

  1. As Trump ends the year with a flood of lies about his wall, we need to recapture a core truth about this presidency.

Trump isn't “twisting the truth” or “stubbornly refusing to admit error.”

Trump is engaged in disinformation.

This is a different thing entirely.

Stephen Miller to the fore as everyone else ducks for cover.

Several former officials who spoke to Yahoo News said Miller’s reemergence as a public face of the White House was a public relations catastrophe.
“If you’re a comms person, you don’t want to have him out there because every time he goes out, it’s an absolute disaster,” one former West Wing staffer told Yahoo News.

  1. Once Trump’s lying is understood as concerted and deliberate disinformation, it becomes clear that the frequency and audacity of it is the whole point.

Those are features of the lying. They are central to declaring the power to say what reality is

Trust me cozie that IS holding back! If I said what I really feel, I'd probably have the Secret Service at my door! Grin

I challenge Mueller to put up or shut up. You have no evidence of the President being involved in a conspiracy with anyone including Russia to hack. And you also have no evidence of collusion. It’s been 2 years so submit a report to DOJ and we will answer it.

'Country A' and it's mysterious 'Corporation' may soon be back in the news.

We’re about to find out why the chief justice of the Supreme Court decided to get involved in the special counsel’s investigation.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 31/12/2018 09:03

Yep.

People are assuming when Trump leaves office, voila, we’ll be back at Jan 19, 2017 and move on from there. Wrong! As someone who has been keeping track of loss norms for 111 weeks, the damage he has done will take years, if not decades to repair. Our country has changed.

Absolutely NorthWest. I can see no realistic scenario where 2019 is good. Confused

Yes. Trump is there for a reason and does have a party behind him.
The world is still suffering the consequences of the Dubbya presidency. Angry

Lweji · 31/12/2018 09:26

What was the question?

Gumpendorf · 31/12/2018 09:47

I can't remember exactly Lweji but it started with a quote that she was a self confessed liberal and then said she was a presenter on a US cable news show. It made me realise not everyone is as familiar with US TV as we all are. Wink

lionheart · 31/12/2018 10:56

I shout a lot at the tv when the BBC covers US politics. Smile

In your dreams, Woody.

This is US ambassador talking, primarily about Brexit and UK/US trade deal, but... last paragraph...

He added that it would be "great" if President Trump's postponed state visit could take place in May, around the time of World War Two commemorations - if his schedule, and that of the Queen, allowed.
