To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

Silver-lining, I've just learned a new phrase.Grin

Thank you, Wordthe, I'd never heard of the ring of Gyges.

Wordthe · 24/12/2018 10:57

Perkingfaintly I feel my allusion is fitting when you consider the powers that having a drone could confer on one!

Wordthe · 24/12/2018 11:00

I reckon someone on high has spotted the potential dangers of unfettered drone use, a plan for a staged crisis involving a drone was formulated and the UK drew the short straw

we had to suck it up take one for the team and play host to the Grinch with the drone that stole Christmas

brizzledrizzle · 24/12/2018 13:24

"Therefore we took the necessary actions to ensure the safety of passengers using our airport. Safety will always be our number one priority.

Gatwick have apparently spent £5 million since Wednesday on anti-drone measures, if safety is (as quoted by the BBC) why wasn't this money spent on it earlier?

ciderhouserules · 24/12/2018 15:17

I'm surprised that they are now saying that there may not have been a drone. We had Police on house-to-house enquiries on Saturday, and they are still doing it today. Apparently the drone flew across our back gardens (they wanted to know if anyone had seen it - No, we didn't Hmm)

Whisky2014 · 24/12/2018 15:53

It still doesn't make sense because there was footage and articles released about how the drone was playing cat and mouse..

No footage of it I've seen.
A picture of a kestrel
several pictures of crane lights
lots of archive shots
but NOTHING definitely over Gatwick last week

Whisky2014 · 24/12/2018 15:59

I'm sure there was something. I'll try and find it.
But if there wasn't why are they making up that there was?!

Whisky2014 · 24/12/2018 16:06

And what about these timelines telling us there were new sightings?

To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack
Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 16:07

You trust the twitter feed of a newspaper to be accurate ?
Really?
Unless its on the Gatwick or Police feeds I do not believe it.....

Whisky2014 · 24/12/2018 16:07

And quotes from the chief operating officer "Gatwick Airport’s chief operating officer Chris Woodroofe said the airport will be closed until at least 4pm. Earlier he said: “I’m absolutely certain this is a deliberate act. There is a drone on my airfield as we speak.”

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 16:11

Whisky
Find me a link to him saying it on a Gatwick account or on the police account.
Seriously. Newspapers especially ones edited by George Osborne lie

Punto1 · 24/12/2018 16:15

It must have been bloody traumatic for that couple being dragged in for questioning and villainised across the globe. Is there any report on why they were suspects? Did they own drones or have an affiliation to an ECO group or something or did they pick two names from a hat?!

Whisky2014 · 24/12/2018 16:16

Yes I know. But so do the police. I highly doubt the army woukd have been called in over no one seeing any drones.

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 16:16

OK, this one is real he just says "drone activity"
www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/video-news/gatwick-airport-remains-closed-after-drone-activity-37646674.html

HowlsMovingBungalow · 24/12/2018 16:16

Sussex Police twitter feed has tweets about drone sightings.

Punto1 · 24/12/2018 16:18

It's possible there were no drones but there was an active effort by a group to report sightings or something? You can't really be jailed for being an 'apparently concerned citizen'.

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 16:19

Lots of people "saw" stuff
but no pictures or footage by any of the thousands of mobile phone owners hanging around terminal windows ....

I do believer there was a a drone - because there have been so many before
but the press whipped it up into a frenzy
to take Brexit off the front page for a day

HowlsMovingBungalow · 24/12/2018 16:20

67 individual drone sightings and a damaged drone recovered so Sussex police state.

Can't see how they can retract all of that.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 24/12/2018 16:22

GatwickDrones | We are continuing our investigation into 67 reported #drone sightings made by the public, passengers, police officers and staff at

@Gatwick_Airport

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 16:23

67 individual drone sightings
that could be one person 60 times
and seven reporting the lights on the cranes

and the damaged drone could have been there for weeks

News reporting is mostly lies
Look at the garbage that was printed about that couple after all

LonelyandTiredandLow · 24/12/2018 16:43

I thought the police were now retracting the statement thst there hadn't been a drone? Or at least they seem to understand people are confused why they would take such drastic efforts as taking in a couple for questioning, calling in MOD and closing a major airport just on a few "sightings" with no proof. Does anyone know if air traffic control have been able to discuss it? At JFK thry warn about birds so I can only assume they would know what was in their air space.

brizzledrizzle · 24/12/2018 16:44

That video of them Sad

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 17:20

I hope that somebody like Branson offers them a fantastic New Years break on Necker
they deserve a proper destress after what they were put through
