To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

So they currently don't believe it's terrorism-related.

But they don't yet know for definite, so of course it could turn out to be.

Punto1 · 21/12/2018 02:14

Yes, since they don't know whose behind it apparently how can they rule out terrorism?

TomPinch · 21/12/2018 02:21

Allegedly the police are looking for "Ming" who "is a psycho".

Xmas Wink
Punto1 · 21/12/2018 02:32

Who is Ming?

I posted this on the other thread...

Flights now happening in and out but no news.

Anyone here used to watch Spooks? I remember them finishing witht the BBC report to "cover up" whatever had really happened, gas leak etc. There is so much we may never know....

canigetaliein · 21/12/2018 06:41

I don’t understand what it could be covering up though, surely if there is a threat to a flight, there’s a threat to the airport where there is thousands of people.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 21/12/2018 06:43

Oh I dont doubt there's drones/threat to life. We just dont know the ins and outs of it.

Presumably they're satisfied theyve found the people concerned/the drones/theres been communication with them if theyve started running planes.

Punto1 · 21/12/2018 06:45

Would they have known about the presence of drones without a tipoff?

TSSDNCOP · 21/12/2018 06:48

I’ve just left Gatwick on a bus to get my plane which is at Stansted.

Just want to say the ground staff are AMAZING! They all look knackered but are being so helpful. There’s a lot of dig deep and carry on happening. Except for the utter bitch gobbing off because her plane for Gambia is in the wrong place. So let’s hope that one’s grounded for a nice long time Wink

AlaskanOilBaron · 21/12/2018 06:49

Flights have just resumed. What a nightmare.

DeepanKrispanEven · 21/12/2018 07:29

There was a lot of activity at Clapham Junction last night with armed police and people from the Para regiment. That could tie in with the theory that this was in some way related to a bigger terrorist threat.

Bobcat14 · 21/12/2018 07:31

I just posted this on another thread too...

The weird thing is I drove round the back of the airport to go shopping yesterday. There's a country road around the perimeter, backing on to the end of the runway. I nearly went the main road way as I envisaged it either being shut or chockablock with police, media etc but then habit made me take my normal route. When I got there it was empty. I went all around the edge of the airport and encountered one police car and one airport security car. No media or police in the lay-bys that a lot of plane spotters usually use. Nothing. This was about 11am and it was the same on my return journey a few hours later bar the lone police helicopter hovering over. I found it all really strange.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 21/12/2018 07:41

I really do suspect a bigger picture. We will never know...

LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2018 07:47

I KNEW it would be an environmentalist

Punto1 · 21/12/2018 07:50

Have they found the drone flyer then?

chantico · 21/12/2018 07:57

"How is it not terror related???"

Motive. Speculation: maybe they had a ransom note, which made it clear it was crime (and contained a non-public detail so they knew it was genuine from the operator/s of the drones).

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/12/2018 08:09

They will track them down. It’s going to be some saddo. Hope they realise that this will mean jail for them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2018 08:12

I tried to film a drone that was following me, or at least the path I was walking along, at the same pace as me a few weeks ago. It was pretty high up. It was surprisingly hard to film and all I ended up with was a black speck at best.

I suspect that there are security reasons why footage from Gatwick officials isn't being shown.

KathyBates · 21/12/2018 08:12

This thread was painful to read so I skipped the last chunk.

All it takes is for a couple of pilots to report a sightings to Air Traffic on approach or takeoff and the will stop arrivals/ departures. It's been reported to the police as it's a deliberate act (by protesters/ terrorists/ kids...) same procedure happens for lasers.

Someone said they don't stop for geese- they absolutely do. Bird control is taken very seriously at airfields and numerous procedures are put in place to avoid an incident. Even a flock of small birds in the wrong place on an airfield will stop aircraft takeoffs and landings.

Photographing drones is difficult, especially when you're not where they are from and they're being flown by someone who doesn't want to be photographed.

I have no idea who is behind them but I would guess at protesters trying to cause maximum disruption.

That 'US Command Aircraft' is a cargo flight (it actually tells you that at the bottom of the page!)

Stop panicking people- have a lovely day

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2018 08:18

If anyone thinks that this is some weird uk cover up, then yes, you are a conspiracy theorist.

SquirmOfEels · 21/12/2018 08:27

The activity at Clapham Junction doesn't appear to have made even the local news (neither did eg the major emergency services reposing there a couple of Fridays ago). Unless police confirm it was related, assume it isn't, because this sort of thing happens at least once a month, if not more often,

Buteo · 21/12/2018 08:28

On R4 Grayling has just called it “a new kind of attack” and did not rule out that it could be a foreign government when specifically asked, just that it wasn’t a conventional terrorist attack.

Interesting ...

RoseAndRose · 21/12/2018 08:29

Sashkin - do you have any grounds for repeating an accusation against specific individuals? I know I'm being cautious here, but repeat publishing a libel is still libel, isn't it?

(or have I missed an official update?)
