To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

Then we need scooby doo and the gang

Ta1kinpeace · 20/12/2018 21:46

To be honest the lack of footage is more suspect.
Why ?
The police and the airport may have footage
but they have no need to share it with the public

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 20/12/2018 21:48

No little rectangles on other airports! Just Gatwick

Wordthe · 20/12/2018 21:48

That video purports to be of drones or UFO...
Aliens have come to help us with the brexit negotiations?

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2018 21:48

There is plenty of footage. And pics taken at different times, just google it.

And not read the whole thread but it's a big deal. Ten times it's been flown over thr run way, there is at least two drones and they are industrial drones, not toys.

alphajuliet123 · 20/12/2018 21:49

I hate drones. I was at a festival last year and a huge drone was hovering above the crowd watching a band. Didn't really bother me at first as I assumed it was filming the gig, until a friend said "hope it doesn't drop a bomb on us".

Just imagine - a football match, a concert, a busy shopping centre, a Christmas market or anywhere else with lots of people in a small space.... really, what's stopping a terrorist attack by drone?

brizzledrizzle · 20/12/2018 21:50

They are at other airports as well, you just can't see them because they have planes flying in and out

Runwayqueen · 20/12/2018 21:55

Those rectangular shapes will be Airfield Operations vehicle out on patrol. All LGW vehicles show on FR24, as do some other airports (LHR).

It is so sad that so many have had there travel plans disrupted, but I do feel for the staff that are in the public eye, I hope they have been well supported by the LGW management.

It's been quite the discussion point at work today as sadly it could happen at any UK aerodrome given the lax laws that we have compared to other states.

AutumnCrow · 20/12/2018 21:57

Fascinating thread, in a grim way.

brizzledrizzle · 20/12/2018 21:59

It's easy to forget when looking at FR24 that it's real people having their xmas screwed up by the inconsiderate behaviour of a mindless few. It is fascinating, yes.

Ta1kinpeace · 20/12/2018 21:59

bluntness
Link please to footage of this weeks drones

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 20/12/2018 21:59

It has a terrorist feel to it

I can't help but feel that

badlydrawnperson · 20/12/2018 22:00

Can you post a link? cos Google isn't showing me anything except stock photos of drones and footage of a police copter.

I feel terrible for all the passengers. We’re due to fly in to Luton on Sunday night, I’d be gutted if I couldn’t get ‘home’.

This thread is really interesting, I do feel like there is a little more to this than just not being able to find who is controlling the drone.

Justajot · 20/12/2018 22:02

I'm confused as to how they have ruled out terrorism. The definitions I have read of terrorism include the threat of violence for political ends. The drones are violent n the sense that they could cause massive harm. So the "for political ends" bit must be missing, suggesting that they know who is doing it and they are just doing it for fun.

canigetaliein · 20/12/2018 22:03

I get that it’s like a needle in a haystack Ta1kinpeace but I just assumed the authorities had some kinda of high tech tracking/finding device.

What happens if it keeps coming back?

Babygrey7 · 20/12/2018 22:04

Is it Russian test case scenario?

ThomasRichard · 20/12/2018 22:05

I liked this one.

To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack
brizzledrizzle · 20/12/2018 22:06

Then this keeps happening and people get increasingly pissed off.
I can't see how this is going to end soon unless the military have ways of finding the drone operator. They will have things that we're unaware of.
Has the drone been spotted recently? They did say they were trying to reopen at 10pm.

dapplegrey · 20/12/2018 22:06

There’s a posh boys boarding school in Crawley - maybe it’s pesky kids

Won’t they have broken up for the holidays?

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 20/12/2018 22:08

The “footage” appears mostly to be of patrolling helicopters. There are thousands of people on their phones just waiting for hours in an airport with huge windows. There’s next to nothing on twitter etc.
I’ve seen one grainy daytime video, and that nighttime one above (which most, as I said, think is a helicopter as too large).

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 20/12/2018 22:09

Nothing on twitter by way of video footage that is. Tons of photos of sleeping and sad people...

Floppyspanielears · 20/12/2018 22:09

Would the reason they are not declaring this terrorism be because compensation won't get paid out for that reason?

canigetaliein · 20/12/2018 22:10

there’s a man on bbc news taking about his product that allows you to track a drone, why can’t they use that?

happychange · 20/12/2018 22:12
