To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

@thomasrichard Now we know what May was getting at when she said the worst thing she had done was run through a hay field.

canigetaliein · 20/12/2018 22:14

they showed that DM video on BBC, tbh it looked like a bird to me but i’ve never see a drone.

TokyoSushi · 20/12/2018 22:17

I agree it's very weird and I suspect more to it than they're saying. They said on sky news earlier that it could be being operated over the internet from anywhere in the world.

It seems more professional than some nerd arsing about with a drone.

Terfing · 20/12/2018 22:19

Someone on Twitter just tweeted that some cabin crew said that it's 20 drones being controlled by an extremist group.

badlydrawnperson · 20/12/2018 22:20

Short bit of blurry video and 1 blurry pic on the Daily fail Website - not a lot is it?

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 20/12/2018 22:22

Badly - right? It’s really not a lot, given the density of bored people in the area.

canigetaliein · 20/12/2018 22:24

I would have expected more footage tbh.

meditrina · 20/12/2018 22:26

I think the suggestion earlier in the thread that it's straightforward extortion (pay £1b or we'll shut you down for Christmas and show the world how it's done) is one scenario under which they can quickly rule out terrorism.

False flag only makes sense if there's an obvious group that everyone would assume is the perpetrator, and that doesn't seem to be the case.

It does seem quite likely that there are several drones involved, and that they are being operated from a distance away (quite possibly a modification beyond standard)

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 20/12/2018 22:27

Terfing I saw that too mobile.twitter.com/Sh3ps11/status/1075870809829318658

taleforthetimebeing · 20/12/2018 22:27

I think there is more to this as well - I can’t believe they don’t have the technology to track or block signals. Hmm 🤔

nicoala1 · 20/12/2018 22:27

I’m concerned that this is a co ordinated attack. We are not being told what the security services know , probably to reduce panic.

It is going on for far too long now and if a rogue drone cannot be disabled it is very sinister for daily life in general now. Sorry if that sounds over the top but it’s what I feel now.

Reports are on LBC that the drone will now be shot down. But there could be many of them.

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 20/12/2018 22:28

Meditrina you forgot UFOs....Grin

TheBaltictriangle · 20/12/2018 22:29

Putin & his gang is all I'm saying. Don't forget the novichok incident, I reckon the Russians are behind it.

Whisky2014 · 20/12/2018 22:30

They must know by the size if the things how much explosives there might be in one. Personally I doubt there's any. It's fucking ridiculous it's taken 24 hours to come to the decision to shoot it/them down.

DeepanKrispanEven · 20/12/2018 22:30

There are thousands of people on their phones just waiting for hours in an airport with huge windows

Poor sods are probably conserving their batteries.

Interesting tech blog: “A few reasons why cops haven't immediately shot down London Gatwick airport drone menace“

CatnissEverdene · 20/12/2018 22:43

I think there must be a very credible security threat for all this action. And the lack of public footage is very telling.

I know those poor people are pissed off about their travel plans but they're far safer where they are and that's all that really counts.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 20/12/2018 22:52

If it's hovering over the runway how can passengers in the terminal see it? I doubt they can, although I'm not at all familiar with Gatwick.

JustDanceAddict · 20/12/2018 22:52

ITs v worrying. A relative was due to fly today and is now back home. Thankfully from here rather than stuck abroad, but still gutting.
We are due to fly after xmas but not from Gatwick. It’s still worrying though - the attackers could move into other London airports.
I’m worried about what it all means and also sad for those who’ve been caught up in it, I hope that when they do catch them, they are imprisoned for a long time.

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 20/12/2018 22:53

www.flightradar24.com/EZY24QY/1eef8e89 One plane looks ready to go. Testing it all out with an EasyJet plane?

CoachBombay · 20/12/2018 22:54

They aren't going to be able to shoot them down. You can't have live rounds bouncing about a airfield filled with billions of pounds worth of kit. And like hell is a sniper going to be able to lock on to a 50cm target flying in random patterns at speeds of up to 30mph. A bloody head shot on a static object is hard enough.

They will have to jam all radio signals that's the only way, or like the police say, find the pilot. But the pilot could be sat in let's say Moscow sipping on a coffee sovietly chuckling to himself....just saying 🤷🏻‍♀️

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 20/12/2018 22:54

That’s odd...it’s gone now

JustLurkingAway · 20/12/2018 22:56

Another one, suppose it's accidental though

To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack
PavlovianLunge · 20/12/2018 22:56

We’re supposed to be flying into Gatwick tomorrow afternoon. Clearly that’s not going to happen, I’m just hoping we get back to the UK - I read that some flights have been diverted to Paris and Amsterdam.

Surely the best brains in the country should have found a solution to this by now, shouldn’t they?

brizzledrizzle · 20/12/2018 23:00

Two Easyjet ones are showing up now - Gatwick-Luton and Gatwick-Alicante (presumably a mistake)

I doubt they'll be going anywhere, I wouldn't have thought they'd send a test flight up to see if the plane makes it or not; could get expensive for starters and I can't see any airline being willing to let their (empty apart from crew) be the guinea pig.
